My favorite obsolete physical media format is the Capacitance Electronic Disc, this bizarre thing that looks like a vinyl record inside a big, flat NES cartridge. I stumbled upon a bunch of them at an antique market years ago and wish I had bought a couple, even if I had no way to play them they would make great decorations.

If you like long form youtube videos a guy did this great four parter on the history of the CED. It's a really interesting story. The account is called Technology Connections.

I've been weirdly fascinated with those things since I first discovered them so this may be enough to get me to overcome my distaste for long form youtube videos, thank you.

The first time I ever watched American Werewolf in London was on a CED. My dad had a handful of them and a player for some odd reason. I remember the quality seeming a little better to me as a kid than VHS but I'm not sure how I would have been able to tell over RF

So as far as I know, CED did have more lines of resolution than VHS, but less than laserdisc. It gets a little more complicated. All of the releases were in the 80s, so the transfers to video went the best, so it's possible that a VHS from the 90s would look better than an old CED if it had been remastered. But there are other age related issues too that make doing a direct comparison very difficult.

At some point during the pandemic I sort of "caught up" with UHD releases, where I pretty much owned every single UHD that I felt I needed to have and so it was just a matter of waiting for new stuff to be released. But now we're entering a stretch where so much is gonna come out in the span of a few months that I'm probably gonna get behind again. Which is actually great, it means there will be stuff floating around that I can buy on a whim when I get paid or whatever, that's always nice.

Vinegar Syndrome's flash sale is coming up at the end of the week, should be able to preorder Flesh for Frankenstein during it, and a couple other goodies.

Speaking of VinSyn, Terminal Island looks fantastic. I really can't tell if it's a testament to the UHD format or a testament to Vinegar Syndrome's work. It feels like a movie you would have seen on cable in the 90s all faded out, but that early 70's film stock really pops.

Excited to hear Vinegar Syndrome is putting out Flesh For Frankenstein. I have some 'Cinema Cult' bluray that's... not very great quality. Should be getting my copy of Six String Samurai later this week.

I splurged on the halfway subscriber package from Vinegar Syndrome and it gave me Tough Guys Dont Dance so I'll be rolling the dice on the full year subscription this time.

I've barely dipped into my VinSyn stuff from last sale, but I have watched Silent Madness, which I loved and highly recommend for fans of slashers. I wish I had a 3D TV to watch that transfer, but I did watch it with the anaglyph 3D glasses it comes with and even that ruled. It has 3D, Anaglyph 3D and then regular, for those that don't want the 3D. It has an interesting place in 3D Film history, cuz it's the same cameras they used for Jaws 3D and it's the same cinematographer as Friday the 13th Part 3D. It's filmed way better than Friday 3D, and not as interested in the novelty of 3D movie effects, so it creates an interesting depth to the photography and sets instead of pretending to shove things into your face.

The discounts you get on non subscription items and partner label releases is so good too. Buying from VS and their partners easily makes up the majority of my film purchases now. It’s currently “delayed” for me, so I’m not sure if people are getting their’s or not. Or if I’m an edge case. But yes, at some point, they will definitely sell out. Just checked the other 2 Steelbooks and they’re gone.

I’ll give you that H&S was better than F8 which was pretty bad, but 1-7 & 9 are leagues better than H&S. It should’ve cut down the runtime down quite a bit. Bloated mess.
