they have a bit of a tussle and one bird decides to stop his display and move off a bit. rinse and repeat

Female birds show up and watch the lek and have sex with the male bird that makes the best display and/or fight off the other males. There's a hidden bonus for males that don't win though; they get experience in fighting, and occasionally they get to sneak a little birdpussy on the side since the bigger bird can't be all over the place at once

In this video the guy on the skis has gotten into a lek and the bird thinks he's got a competitor. Also some lekking bird secies have decreased in number regionally since they are very conservative in lekking location so whenever you happen to construct a road going over a lek a bunch of horny birds will fight cars.
