It's a subtle reference to the classic sci-fi movie, Spaceballs.

That scene has some dull action in a dull setting, which is honestly more damning for a movie than the cheap references.

Ready Player 1 was stupid, but at least Mecha Godzilla, the Iron Giant, and a Gundam fighting is a dynamic scene. It works on the level of giant robot fight.

The director of Free Guy did the Night at the Museum movies, which in retrospect is I guess is in the same "I get that reference" genre

The ending of Ready Player One has the protagonists take over the VR MMO whateveritscalled and deciding to turn it off a few times a week so people can go outside for real.

The heroes of the story still end up as the "good" capitalists at the end. But they realize making a virtual utopia is no substitute for fixing the capitalist hellscape real world. Movie was, for better or worse, exactly what I expected it to be, so I can't recommend it. A disturbing thought that there are now inferior knockoffs.

We have Ryan Reynolds mugging to the camera to let us know the other Ryan Reynolds made a joke, but the scene could also use a cut to a Youtuber reacting to the mugging, possibly played by Ryan Reynolds.

Somewhat related: Deadpool executing Ryan Reynolds would be much funnier if it ended the scene with the spray of blood instead of dragging out the joke.

my favorite part of this is that a movie that already wastes half of its runtime explaining poo poo the audience already knows even in this same drat clip makes zero effort to explain what these powers are and why they exist in the movies internal continuity

I'm sure this was brought up when it premiered, but I'm finally watching the Disney + Marvel shows after a friend let me borrow their login. Loki and WandaVision were more or less fine, but Falcon and the Winter Soldier has got to be some of the most high budget boring TV ever produced.

I absolutely remember this happening, but worth noting that Closing Time came out almost exactly a year earlier than the Matrix (though I wasn't able to get an exact release date on the music video if it differed (which it probably didn't by much since it was the lead single)

last5 5 movies i remember watching from beginning to end:

* Dunkirk - saw on an aeroplane, didn't get much of the audio, didn't affect anything
* Dog Day Afternoon - rewatch, still good
* Beauty and the Beast remake with Emma Watson
* Eric Andre movie on Netflix
* The Matrix - rewatch, still good

Culture is death process.

For as much poo poo as massive cross-over IPs like Marvel get, I'll give them that there's at least a coherent reason why the characters exist in the same world. As opposed to whatever the gently caress this genre is.

1998 onward you're really heading into the golden age of the digital grade, but it's funny that it starts with stuff like The Matrix where they really were just physically painting green everywhere and throwing green light about.

Lego movie works so much differently though because us adults remember having little Lego dudes from various IPs and mashing them together and no, this ghost in the castle set is now fighting my blacktron guys and here comes the ambulance

Having the real life mashup as the nostalgia base goes a long, long ways

well this certainly explains why the games in squid game make increasingly less sense as time goes on if the director didnt even think the rules were important the fifth game in particular is utter horseshit because theres nothing approaching actual strategy or skill nor does it even have the excuse of being based on actual childhood game youre literally just flipping a coin a dozen times in a row

i think what really bugs me about squid game looking back is that were pretty close to a clear point in the final episode where the main character meets the guy who created the games and hes an eccentric dying millionaire who was trying to relive his childhood this basically turns the whole thing into citizen kane but what if instead of just saying rosebud he used his wealth and power to construct the rosebud games to serve the triple purpose of getting to be a kid one last time finding an heir and rationalize his terrible life choices as being something anyone would do given the opportunity the main character then chooses to reject this philosophy by exposing the games and giving the money to the survivors of the dead competitors

but for the sake of setting up a second season we get all this worldbuilding that completely undermines that interpretation were explicitly told that theyve been doing squid games for years that they even do them in other countries and that the main beneficiaries are rich assholes who bankroll the whole thing and that they have somehow not been exposed despite the fact that their own security rules are so patently idiotic that any random moron could just beat up an employee with a mask steal his identity and spend days collecting evidence without anyone even realizing theyve been infiltrated

in other words for the sake of capitalism squid game undermines its own anticapitalist critique and is effectively dooming itself to relive the stupidest parts of its worldbuilding because all the good parts of the worldbuilding only work in the context of the self contained story and are pretty much done now
