Competence on the battlefield is a myth. The side which screws up next to last wins, it's as simple as that.

I still play hots because I can't find any other games that push the same buttons for me but are so easy to play for a game or two then drop.

Also like...yeah getting a dental procedure done IS a lot less of a hassle, overall, than losing an entire limb. By an INCREDIBLE magnitude. They aren't even in the same book of comparable, this is just a garbage comparison.

Fuck the DH
I don't think losing esports killed HOTS because it's really not into "individual skill expression" with most wins or losses being fought over map-specific objectives. I remember one game I won where 9/10 players died but we won the right to launch Mechagodzilla before the wipe and the lone living player on the enemy team was a healer could not stop the mechagodzilla from crushing his team's throne building. We won a game despite all being wiped by having good enough timing to let the AI do the actual work for us. While it was an interesting final clash full of very awesome plays, it would not be an esport moment to be proud of since the map gimmick effectively pushed through the enemy's high ground for us.

People like "big plays" and Heroes forces teamfights that are mostly over small objectives at pre-determined times, and often don't involve ten people all at once, or if they do it's at designated moshing pits. That programmed dynamic of swinging balances makes it less fun to watch high level play. Also, it seemed to launch without any plans for an eSport almost, sorta like Hearthstone, because observer/casting abilities were definitely not well fleshed out when the eSports scene was shitcanned. HOTS had some really amazing hero ideas (that one Zerg support who plays all the lanes while being present in none <3) but it was definitely objecting to the typical MOBA win state that I think is part of what makes Dota and League enjoyable to spectate.

In a way it reminds me a lot of LOL's Nexus Blitz mode. I've had a lot of fun with that, but I wouldn't watch a tournament of it.

Losing esports itself absolutely didn't kill HotS, because HotS's esports scene was comparatively tiny(though it did hugely gently caress over everyone employed in the HotS esports scene with basically no notice or warning despite previous assurances to the contrary). It's just that Blizzard pulled the plug on active HotS support and development and put the game on functional maintenance mode very shortly after officially killing the esports scene, so "HotS esports died" lines up really closely with "HotS died" in the timeline.

Nah, they only brought him back once to be the proper final boss of a lowbie dungeon. Though there is another gnoll, Meatball, who keeps inexplicably coming back (his first appearance ended with him getting blown up to bloody chunks) since his debut in Mists.

D2R: game is apparently pretty good, absolutely huge launch issues between server stability and characters getting deleted, but apparently they're getting them more sorted out now?

OW2 reveal/preview was just the ow client with one less tank, a slightly redone UI and 2 reworked characters on a new map. The numbers on the rework are ludicrous and idk what on earth they were thinking, but the main impression it gives is that there was indeed substance to the leak that they have no clue how to balance 5v5. Sombra is now a dps god annnnnnnnd zarya gets a 2nd bubble? Nice

Reaction has been pretty mixed, some pros are sounding like they're moving on from OW, some seemed underwhelmed but open to giving it a shot, and some seem excited. development issues aside, I'm extremely skeptical that removing the really cool main-tank off-tank synergy and camaraderie is going to make the game better and more interesting. Unless they do some really nutty stuff to make tanks beefier, it's just shaping up to be a turkey shoot as main-tanks 100% rely on the off tank to facilitate taking space and giving zarya one more bubble is not in the least fixing that extremely huge core issue with 5v5 tanking.

Good to hear about D2R

They just seem unable to figure out how to make Tanks work. It has been an issue since the game launched. Every major change has been to control how many Tanks the players would stack.

So they just removed our ability to stack them in any fashion.

The plan to make CC a more tank focused ability is definitely a good idea though.

never understood blizzard's treatment of overwatch. it's been remarkably clear for years that the appeal of overwatch was the characters (and SFM porn) and the shooter part was, like, no one's favorite part. why blizzard didn't make an RPG or adventure game or whatever that actually focuses on what people like instead of trying to make The Future Of ESports.

Likely has to do with how OW came to be in the first place. Was basically the scavenged remains of Project Titan, I honestly doubt anyone had a clue what they should be trying to make and were focused on what they could make with the assets to salvage something.

Blizzard's claim to fame is stealing other peoples ideas and then slow-cooking them until the serial numbers have worn off (see warhammer > warcraft)

Whenever they have to come up with something original or expand on the story of what they made you can see them slowly stumble.
