This isn't true surely. Yes my copy of BF1 was still installed and I am reinstalling BFV again but that's all coincidental I'm sure.

yeah bf games have functioned by having a well designed rock paper scissors class balance (and this includes the vehicles even) and that gave a lot of design room to make each archetype strong enough to stand out in some way

idk it's just weird to not have that. imo the shotguns+DMRs being available to all classes was a good compromise that added a lot of flexibility, too

BFV is just less fun, even if it ended up in a pretty good place. It took forever for maps to not be just the color of sludge (but I absolutely adore how Mercury looks and it's my fav map in that game and also pacific is legit p.good), the randomly rotating game modes and shithouse assignment system always were annoying, and even with the best gunplay and infantry movement mechanics of the modern Battlefields, it still ends up just somehow either being boring or stressful.

When I get bored in BF1 I can tool around in a behemoth or get on horseback, and in BF4 I can jihad jeep or do some MAV stuff. In BFV I always felt like, oh this round is pretty boring (maybe it's a stomp or it's that map that's like Golmund that's just a tank fest and usually the attackers are locked at spawn) and so what can I do to have fun? Not much, really, I tended toward fortification building which I legit liked for 'downtime' within the map, otherwise was dedicated tank repairer.

I don't play ultra frothing at the mouth pro gamer streamer mlg42069xXx style so having options within the game to just tool around (that doesn't rely on getting to a pickup first) is always good for Battlefields. 2042 seems to be giving us a fair amount of that with C5 (lmao) drones and ziplining to interesting locations, etc.

BF1 is more fun than V without a doubt, BF3/4 also, and BF4 would have been goated if they ported all the BF3 maps into it, which can't have been that difficult since they basically look and play extremely similarly and must have been on the same-enough 'version' of Frostbite.

Port all old maps into Portal please, DICE.

It's why I find Portal such a funny idea. They've said they have no idea why BC2 was fun so.....here's some BC2 maps, and weapons, and the teams. Just...just make your own BC alright?

Like they don't know why anything works so they made a mode where you just take all the options you like and make your own Battlefield. Want to make one team Nazis with knives and the other team hunt them with robot dogs? Sure, gently caress it, why not?

Bad Company 2
Battlefield 3
Battlefield 1
Battlefield 4
Battlefield V

BFV is definitely the weakest, and DICE did a whole lot of dumb poo poo, but I think it's a pretty alright game overall. BF4 is better than BF1, but I was inexplicably poo poo at it, so 1 ended up being more fun for me to play.

3 also had that aftermath expansion with the earthquake ruined cities, and the game mode where everyone runs around picking up guns while still being on a team. It was a loving blast having this massively unique game mode for the last expansion pack. Maps were also infantry centric and unique to the setting, with hollowed out buildings and rubble covered streets.

Hell Gem
BC2 and BF1 are surprisingly about equal to me, both at the top, and I didn't get the latter until that Revolution all-in-one edition came out. BC2 was a greatly simplified experience, something I kind of resented, but something that ultimately worked in its favour. The destruction was game changing and it was the first time shooting actually felt good in a Battlefield game. BF1, meanwhile, had easily the best atmosphere and art design, the most mechanically interesting weapons, and I liked that the different classes actually had to play to their ranges, e.g. SMGs were all but useless from afar. I thought BF1 marked a return to maps that actually felt like warzones instead of cordoned off arenas. As pointed out, BF1 also has the Martini Henry, which is God's gift to guns.

BF3 is probably the one I played the least of, and I didn't like its maps. I remember getting excited at the fact that it was advertising itself a more complex, BF2-like experience but I don't think that panned out much. Didn't actually end up getting it until the end of its life cycle, didn't have a computer that could play it until then. Low levels of destruction were bleh.

BF4 was pretty much BF3+, for good and for ill. The maps were better, and for sheer value, it's gotta be the one game in the series with the most amount of everything. But that also meant the guns became a slurry of modern military equipment, all with pretty much identical unlocks and individual grinds. It was also the first time in a BF game I had real trouble picking enemies out from the background.

Like I said, I didn't play BFV, nothing about it looked interesting to me and I kept hearing it was bad.

So:
BC2/BF1
BF4
BF3
BFV

The flight model is designed to keep you in the air as opposed to being able to do maneuvers.

I want you to think about the implications of that sentence when discussing how 2042 helicopters don't fly like real life helicopters.

The reason so many people are getting poo poo about their bad 2042 opinions is literally every single battlefield beta this exact same thing happens. The same poo poo gets said by the same extremely mad people based off one single map/game mode on an old build. There are plenty of valid criticisms about 2042, I myself do not like the new specialist system, but the idea that that one thing ruins the whole game is ludicrous. Especially because a large part of that argument hinges on having rose colored glasses and thinking that any battlefield ever was overflowing with teamwork. Like all battlefields, the entire issue is fixed by playing with friends/goons with mics.

A reminder to everybody in the midst of this back and forth: BF4 still has tons of servers that stay populated 24/7 and is only $5 with all DLC included.

Yes the model is designed with a significantly lowered skill floor and consequently a lowered skill ceiling. It's kind of lovely. Pretty much any person who has ever flown a helicopter for any length of time in this franchise has said the same thing.

The helicopters in far cry are designed to keep you in the air I don't think many people who've been playing this franchise for years would enjoy an extremely simplified flight model for the sake of ensuring people don't crash.

My most intense BFV memory was a pit-sweat-dripping-down-my-sides 32p frontlines Hamada heart-destroyer that had us -- a bunch of pubbies and nobody on coms against an extremely balanced opposing team, which made it all the more remarkable -- stalemated at the middle fort bit before we eventually pushed all the way to the end, trading the last point several times. It went on forever, and is probably the only instance where I remember Hamada fondly, or heck, even have a crystal clear memory of a single game in BFV.

Ops were worse than BF1 though. I understand the design philosophy to not end the map if attackers can't break through (because then you make a map that possibly 50% of people won't play all the way through), but it had the side-effect of dampening the victorious feeling of successfully breaking through / repelling a breakthrough attempt. The ticket bonus just wasn't enough.

BF1 operations were where it's at. Real stakes, the map changes if you don't break through even after the behemoth, everybody drops, you lose your squad cohesion etc. If you're the defender you get multiple chances. In that sense I suppose it felt more 'meta' and keyed-in to the way multiplayer games work. It just played out better, but I presume all the map designers who did the final points were pretty pissed a bunch of people probably never saw those areas.
