You can tell that the whole fortification system was basically created for Outpost mode, but EA let that die with only a couple maps supported. If EA had the balls to pull a Bad Company and make BF1 based around Breakthrough and BFV based around Outpost they might have done better.

BFV was an okay game at the end and I hope 2042 turns out to be an okay game sooner than its predecessor

I haven't touched the beta because I assume we'll be in beta for several months past the release, so what's the rush

What if this wasn't actually a Battlefield game to begin with, and 6 months before the announcement they decided to use the Battlefield franchise name to increase sales and quickly reworked it to be the next Battlefield?

It has the mechanics of like 3 other entire Battlefield games inside. It's the most Battlefield game there has ever been.

Say what you want about BFV but the UI is clean as gently caress and I can actually read what's going on and how many points I'm getting and what my squad is up to.

Also I played a few rounds last night and being a medic is actually super fun and rewarding which it just wasn't really in the 2042 beta. Finger's crossed there will be other gadgets and better maps that allow for more team play. I'm still excited about it.

What mechanics do any Battlefield games have that those games don't? Ticket based grab and hold gameplay doesn't really apply to the modes they work in, and that's about it.

Doesn't change that you can play 1942 teams with 1942 classes and 1942 weapons on 1942 maps in 2042. Or the same for BC2. Or Battlefield 3. Or take all the stuff from all of those and 2042 and mix them in some horrific amalgam. With the way they gently caress around with introducing new maps the fact there are nearly as many remastered maps as new ones means they spent a lot of time making the game more Battlefield-y. There's 7 new maps and 6 remastered maps. And then there's whatever they did to make a system that can flat out rip out their Specialist system and just plug in the old class system.

If they wanted to just slap a name on it they could have gotten away with doing a lot less work. They could absolutely gently caress it up, but it seems like they put a lot of effort into making sure everyone got something they'd be happy with. It's just that, you know, the beta is the worst possible way to show that off.

Oh that's neat. Don't think I ever played that mode as the non-Conquest servers kinda died off in the OCE region and my interest in the game along with it. :v:

While BFV did end up in a decent state gameplay-wise, my main issue is just that the vibe is off. Which is not a very useful criticism since it's so difficult to quantify, but it still matters. At it's best, Battlefield gives you unique memorable moments that you just don't really get in other games. Like in BF1 when you're rushing across cratered no-man's land with your squad leader's whistle shrilling in your ear, with the sound of machine guns and grenades going off all over the place. Or in BF4 where you're desperately trying to fend off an enemy tank only to have an allied attack helicopter zoom by and blow it up in a hail of explosions.

BFV just didn't manage to capture that same feel for me. Why exactly that is, I can't really say. One part may be because the overall aesthetic is too disparate, what with nearly everybody using pseudo assault rifles with red-dot sights in WW2. Another issue may be the maps, often feeling isolated or constrained. But at the end of the day it doesn't manage to quite capture the sort of feeling that other WW2 games like e.g. Hell Let Loose do.

Whether 2042 can manage to recapture that sort of feel, I can't really say yet. I did actually have a few moments like that in the beta, like managing to clear D point and turning around to see a giant helicopter battle raging around B, but it was also somewhat buried under all the jank.

PAM PAM PARAAAAM!

I'm officially of the mindset that every BF pre-Bad Company was the absolute apex of the entire franchise solely because of how moddable the games used to be.

1942 and BF2 alone were absolute juggernauts, just about every single mod that came out would have people playing them and it was glorious.

Actually I'd argue that pretty much all the modding back in the day was in 1942 (Vietnam got passed on other than the original PoE and one or two others), BF2 was the last one with a ton of modding support BUT the whole "grinding for unlocks on official servers only" thing it started really set the modding community back a while because everyone needed to grind out their guns. It was only much later when no one cared anymore did we start getting some great stuff (so today it's good but we lost a lot of time to strike while the iron was hot) like Sir Mod/Sandbox/Battleracer. Also this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMPOONHUOHs

Bad Company 2 and BF3 are as I understand it reasonably moddable now in that people can mess with the settings and create all the REALISM mods they crave and custom maps/edit existing maps by adding static meshes. But yeah BF2 probably remains the peak at this point.

We have yet to see whether the Portal mode will square the circle of offering people enough modding utility while also being controlled enough to keep them on the unlock treadmill.

Anyway PYF BF mods!
