Bad Company 1 was the first to feature what we think of destruction in the Battlefield series, yes. The ground would deform and fences could be destroyed and every wooden, brick and concrete building could have just about every wall blown out by any explosive, trees could be cut down, etc. It was basically Soldner-level.

Bad Company 2 was the first to feature (a few) buildings that would collapse when enough walls were destroyed.

Previously BF2 had destructible (and repairable) strategic bridges, but that was it. It's quite a trip to go back to BF2 and realize that the fences are impassable, you can't just melee your way through them.

I have very fond memories of Bad Company 2 because

1 - Rush was awesome. Just a tight and fast paced action packed experience. You still had vehicles and they mattered a lot but there were less of them and most of the focus was on infantry and squad fights.

2 - First time in a shooter where I felt like destructible environments were done right. You could start on a map where you had a bunch of houses to take cover behind/in and by the end of the fight the whole area would be completely destroyed with ruins and craters everywhere. It was immensely satisfying to place explosives around a house and explode it, killing the campers inside

Oh that makes sense. I dont remember bad company much (so i cant comment on if its a good bf or whatever) but i do remember being fond of it because the one memory i do associate with it is putting a tank round through a building to kill an annoying sniper and that being incredibly satisfying.

I don't even remember anyone complaining about BF2 when it was coming out, in fact everyone was pretty excited to get "Desert Combat but a full game with a budget."

Now when we finally got settled in, the Skylords had finally memorized all the stinger positions and the load times weren't getting any better...yeah ok maybe.

Edit: And oh, when the teams became nothing but G36Es and PKMs everywhere

Yeah the car chase mode and the cashpile mode were both super fun. I also liked how vehicles were in the game and very strong but not even close to how strong they were in other BF games

Hardlines problem was that it wasn't a Battlefield. But EA were to scared to let it stand on its own feet so slapped the Battlefield name on the front that just confused and annoyed potential buyers.

I love this argument because the other major one is "it should have been an expansion to 4"

It was an offshoot but it was still extremely Battlefield. Ticket based combined arms was the main modes. How isn't that Battlefield?

Also 2042 took ziplines from Hardline so that's good.

It wasn't made by dice for a start. I thought it was well known Hardline started as its own thing only for EA to force it into a Battlefield game late in development?

Presumably, Q as normal, but it was a known bug that it just didn't work, just like opening the map.

Communication was severely lacking in the beta with no commo rose, no text chat, no ingame voip. I instinctively went to type GG in the chat at the end of many rounds.

Dice still guided the production, per Visceral. Never saw anything that suggested that EA made them make it a Battlefield game.

I wish they would bring back Hardline's gun bench because the level of customization on that was pretty nuts.

I don't know that I played the BF4 beta, but from a purely technical level, BF1 and BFV where miles more polished than 2042's. They were basically pure marketing demos, though I'm not sure when they branched development off for them.

I think the reason that people have been clawing at this beta like junkies outside a methodone clinic is that for a lot of people, battlefield HAS been dead for some years. I don't know anyone who was saying BF4 being a re-hash meant that it was dead, just that it was a poor value at $60. I do know people who went to playing COD Ground War just to try to get a battlefield-like experience in 2020.

the biggest problem with BFV was "balance patches" out of nowhere with massive sweeping changes to TTK, then another one to revert it after backlash, then another one because it was too slow again, then another one because it was thursday, etc. if they can avoid doing that and just plug away at it like they did BF4, it'll be worth buying on sale.

Climate change destroyed the environment and thus nutrition. Everyone's 4 feet tall again.

I bought 1 and 5 for 10 bucks. I've played 5 and found it kind of annoyingly good, even if it's totally different and everyone's really good at it so the fact I can't just shoot at triangles puts me at a mad disadvantage. Air is in a strange place to me, honestly. I figured I'd get outflown but no, I can keep up with everyone I find. But I can't kill loving anybody and nobody can kill me. I only get blown up by tanks, bazookas, and AA. Going back to base to fix yourself is interesting, as is limited ammo, that's how planes worked in 1942, Vietnam, 2, 2142, and means that you can drive a plane away from you pretty EZ. But it also means that if you actually want to shoot anyone down you're gonna have to chase them back to their base, and that's usually just not worth it because you're at a huge risk of getting tagged by AA along the way.

Spotting being a thing in and of itself is honestly cooler than I thought. It's implemented way better than 2042, that's for sure, if you've got the spotting scope you're gonna tag the dudes. However, you'd need like... a dedicated spotter in order for it to actually work and I've never seen anyone do that other than teams that kick my team's rear end or, like, me. It feels right because it feels way more low tech, but it's not easy to do and practically impossible on tight infantry focused maps. Scanning my scope over an area and then watching all them dudes die is a great feeling, but there's so many things that have to fall into place before I can do that. Some airplanes can unlock spotting scopes, and that might be cool, but it is not easy to rank those up, holy poo poo.

Also? Fortification is a cool idea. Destruction means that all the points are just rubble like 5 minutes in, yet you're still expected to defend them. Being able to put up walls where walls no longer are is honestly a lot of fun, and scratches the support/logistics/combat engineering itch that battlefield usually doesn't.

I see a lot of IDEAS here that I really like, and its bizzare that 2042 seems to have just thrown them all out. Squad requisition is a great idea, even if apparently most people just loving ignore it cause they have heads full of meat. Honestly, spotting as its own combat role would work really well in a 64v64 match where you could have all sorts of drones and electronic warfare. More dudes means there's more room for specialist roles. I play arma and foxhole, there's LOTS of war roles that aren't "man who shoots!" There even WAS a drone guy in the beta and his drone was worse at spotting than the recon spotting scope! I don get it. I don get their thinking. The vehicle pools, even: in 5 the vehicle pools mean that you can only have a set amount of certain vehicles out, but what you can choose from is insane. Yeah, you can only have 6 tanks, but they could be any combo of different heavy tanks, light tanks, AA tanks, Tank Destroyers, Armored Cars that HAD to have a catch in reality cause how come they made the IVF then... you open it up and there's like 5 things you can pick. 2042 put in vehicle pools for BF4 vehicles, where there's one tank or one AA gun and then you just pick. It's the worst of both worlds! Don' get it.

My favourite was the one they pushed out just before Christmas after launch. So the community was stuck with it for weeks.

Devs are people and deserve time off. But pushing out major gameplay changes just before a major holiday was a dumb management decision.
