What is The Good Life?

Stolen from the Kickstarter page

quote:

The Good Life is a debt repayment daily life RPG co-developed by SWERY's White Owls Inc. and a development team led by Yukio Futatsugi, the creator of Panzer Dragoon and Phantom Dust.

Play as Naomi, a journalist from New York who moves to a backwoods British town called Rainy Woods in order to pay off her massive debt.

The only way for her to escape from debt hell is to take pictures of happenings in the town and report on them. Of course, 'the happiest town in the world' is not your average town...

The inhabitants of the happiest town in the world are some of the most bizarre people you'll ever come across. You'll live alongside them as you solve mysteries and experience a hearty helping of craziness. We're sure that you'll eventually come to love all the mystery, horror, and good old charm that this town has to offer.

If you have a familiarity with SWERY's previous output, you can probably guess that the town you've been sent to is very weird. Main difference is that you're in a Hot Fuzz-esque picturesque British country town not Twin Peaks.

Also that it seems to, some admittedly serious occlusion issues aside, actually run somewhat decently. They appear to have kept their ambition in check unlike the disaster that was Deadly Premonition 2. Or maybe it shits the bed later. I'm still early.

The key gameplay conceit is the photojournalism. You progress the main quest by investigating the central mysteries around the town with your trusty camera skills and use those same skills to earn money doing sidequests for various clients or just taking trendy photos to upload to an app that gives you money based on how popular they are with the current trends. There's also a variety of non-camera related part time jobs like mining, wrangling sheep or working at an underground casino.

You can use this money on clothes, food, new cameras and equipment, getting high in the forest with the local witch or buying furniture and other upgrades for your house. Care for your lovely little cottage and make it a comfortable hideaway from your crushing debt. Which you also have to pay off. Eventually.

So yeah two main goals.

1. Stop Tom Nook from breaking your legs.

2. Solve the big mysteries of Rainy Woods. The murder. Which of course happens shortly after your arrival. And the fact everyone including yourself turn into cats or dogs late at night. That poo poo's pretty weird too. You can and have to change freely between the two, so don't worry bout getting locked in here.

I don't have much personally to add, I just started playing and I like it so far and figured I'd make a quick thread.

Usually in games pre-rendered cutscenes are a chance for devs to go and record what they want in Ultra and 60fps so they can get all the detail they need since they can't guarantee what computer the player is going to have.

Not here. The cutscenes look like they were recorded in a switch and encoded as a 240p youtube video. There's even pop-in trees in the opening cutscene.

This is the second indie game I've played recently with cutscenes that are lower resolution than GBA cart movies, maybe HD capture software is expensive

I'm really enjoying this game so far, it's a delightful mix of weirdness from SWERY and adorableness full of heart! It's really a great game so far.

One of the story branches has Naomi literally saying, "This kind of story is going to trend on Social Media for at least three days."

Oh, man, I just discovered something pretty helpful for getting around. Obviously, the dog can run longer than the other forms, but the cat can jump over stone fence walls.

It's clearly intended behavior but it just makes me scratch my head because there's all those fences that require cash but you can just like, go around them.

That's pretty much all SWERY games in general

Edit: Is there a way to force the game to render at like 4k? It only goes up to 1080p for me and I want to do some super sampling to make it look nicer since the Anti=Aliasing doesn't do too much.

Like most SWERY projects the gameplay is way too ambitious for its own good but the writing and aesthetics are charming as hell.

Been playing this and enjoying it. Feels a little more ordinary than Swery's other games (strange to say that about a game where you can turn into a cat and a dog, and there's a murder mystery), but I enjoy the kind of comfy vibe of just tooling around taking pictures and trying to do these quests. There are an inordinate amount of quests that involve "go get a pile of crafting components" but that's been okay since I can take pictures of stuff at the same time. Game got substantially better once I got my shteed and didn't have to run everywhere.

Well currently it's looking like most of the main quests are going to be about breaking through one or more sets of these trial arches?

I was riding around trying to up my shrine completion and I definitely saw a tree with all red leaves on the other side of one of those gates...

I spent a lot of my run through Route A really stressed and overwhelmed with how much I had to manage, particularly with the nightmare vicar video game, but now that I have access to the money-earning method they give you after that, everything's coming along really nicely. Got a reliable form of income, progressing well with various sidequests and main story, really coming all together.

I gotta say though, the narrator is just aggressively mean to Naomi. Downright bullying from moment one.

It’s probably way too late to help you, but I saw deer in the forest at the far south of the map while trying to unlock the shrine there.

Is there anywhere to take a picture of all the holiday stuff 'E' wants without making it all and putting it in your garden?
Some of the crafting ingredients are just nuts to try and get. 10 aluminium cans for one nugget, 5 nuggets for a chunk, two chunks for one actual item???

Also gently caress that loving rear end in a top hat badger.
