I'd guess it's for recovery and injury management. Suppressing things like Bernal's back problems, aiding the physiotherapy for muscle damage mid-tour.

This is Bahrain, as the study was requested by the police after a raid and they were the only team that got raided.

Doing the research would probably be covered by the source, the police generally do not need your authorization to conduct forensic tests.

Releasing the results of that research is much more questionable. You could argue there is a public interest aspect, but they could easily have just stated they were samples from "professional sportspeople" or w/e and passed along the full details to WADA to deal with. It also tells people who are using it to start looking for new doping opportunities because this window might be about to close.

Im all for it. gently caress these scumbags, giving medicine for non therapeutic reasons to unknowing athletes with no regard for consequences, jail them all and keep investigating them every way possible

Interesting ethically as the riders almost certainly didn't consent to their samples being used for research and this clearly violates any kind of rule around anonymity because it's very clear who the subjects are.

It must be pretty hard being a pro-rider, what if you actually need to take muscle relaxants or something after a race becuase you are hosed? I have to take Naproxen every other bike ride because my back gets sore if I over-do things, being a pro would be hard enough without the scrutiny on legit treatments for pain or anything else. I get that there are reasons people take some stuff to mask other stuff, just trying to feel how lovely it would be being micromanaged like that.

Can't really think of a reason why anyone would use tizanidine seeking performance benefits. It's a muscle relaxant...it causes bradycardia without any benefit...it can make your heart stop. Those tiny pills hit like a truck. I once took two and don't remember the couple hours before it knocked me out.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirmed “potential wrongdoing” by “individuals” at British Cycling and UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) concerning allegations that athlete samples were privately screened using a non-WADA-accredited laboratory for a prohibited and performance-enhancing substance in the lead up to the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Against the rules set by the World Anti-Doping Code and the relevant International Standard, the summary found that UKAD allowed samples to be collected by British Cycling staff rather than doping control officers, analyzed by a non-WADA-accredited laboratory. In addition, this was provided by the athletes on the basis that UKAD would never know the results.

The report also established that at least one UKAD employee new about the study and the sample collections, and that they were being analyzed at a non-WADA-accredited laboratory. WADA has stated that UKAD has no record of receiving the analysis results and emails related to the events.

All the results lists I just checked are various permutations of GER - AUT - SUI in the top three, so it depends on your definition of non-German. There was one Spanish bronze in the, uh, "single men" category

Have there been high profile attempts where the rider DNFed knowing they didn’t have it? Would be better viewing having them less short of breath and bring interviewed explaining why they didn’t have it.

Yeah, definitely one of those events that’s not ideal for TV, it’d be perfect to cut back to for an update during some other sports coverage though.

I wonder how easily the bigger TT specialist guys on the tour could beat the record. Wout, Ganna, Roglic, and some of the lead out guys I’m forgetting. When weight is almost totally irrelevant, doesn’t make sense for an average size guy like Dowsett to have a hope.

Dan Bigham did much in his hour record attempt a few weeks ago, along with his partner Joss actually taking the womens record. As he’s not currently a pro rider in the UCI testing pool it wouldn’t have counted officially anyway. Sure to repeat it once that’s sorted I think.

Great interview about it on the Peak Torque YouTube channel.

Edit: corrected facts.

If you don't go into it with the mindset of "100% got this" you're asking for trouble.

I'm pretty sure he would have got it last year if he hadn't had covid. That was a confident run - sharing training power numbers, talking about how easy the target felt, not spending huge amounts of money on tiny gains, doing it in the UK. Post-covid he's just not been putting out the numbers.

Not on the bike, but I've done hour tests on the rowing machine and they are grim so fair play to the lad for seeing it through.
