As techno-dystopian as it sounds, having a ton of displays for the price of $300 is a neat concept. Of course, the trade-off is wearing the drat goggles on your head all day. But imagine all the posting you can get done with those virtual monitors.

That McKinsey report thing is pretty funny. The idea that employees mostly value work relationships is a wonderful piece of data misinterpretation. When the question is "to what extent did the following factors impact your decision to leave your last job?" obviously people will tend to answer that the emotional triggers were the main reason, rather than the gun of inadequate financial compensation that was there the whole time that's actually a much bigger reason.

It's taking "the straw that broke the camel's back," and reporting "camel backs are especially vulnerable to pieces of straw."

Though on the flip side, if my employer gave me much more money then I'd retire sooner so they'd still be out an experienced employee. But most people aren't like that.

The new great resignation, in which we all become resigned to everything being pointless.

Though there's pointless like the job I'm leaving next week (where I make software that doesn't benefit anyone or do anything useful), pointless like the job I'm going to (where I make software that helps other software be useful or entertaining), and pointless like the thing I would do if money wasn't an issue (making entertainment directly). I guess only the first one is fully pointless; entertainment is okay.

I hear so much about the great resignation, but it's not really effecting California that much.
That's not surprising.

This dumb gently caress country gives too much attention to southern states and fly over states.

There is just "now hiring" banners all over fast food places.
They were always hiring!
It's just a loving trend here.

But yeah good on all those people. gently caress work.

I had been doing this pretty much since march 2020 and got tired of it. it's really depressing to just do nothing and be expected to do nothing but have some kind of mutual agreement with your coworkers to all pretend to be productive! but if you want in I recommend learning javascript, getting hired desperately by some corporation to fix some website they have that's never worked and nobody cares about, and just not fixing it but insist you're trying

I had a job where I was able to set up a DVD viewing room and do nothing but watch tv for 95% of my shift. In a year literally two things happened I had to actively deal with, and one of those happened when I wasn't at work. Eventually I realized I could even have a bit of a sleep in one of the many many beds left in the closed down section.

I had taken the day shift, if I had the forethought to take the night I could have effectively had a "free" full time income.

I think that it is called the great resignation by the elites because it draws attention away from the sheer number of dead and crippled. If there is resignation it looks like a choice made by ordinary people and not monsters throwing people into the wood chipper in hopes that their blood and bones will keep the economy going.

There are people who have walked away and Im not discounting them. But the catalyst for this was the mass suffering caused by covid and its interaction with the forces in charge of extraction capitalism.

The term resignation throws 5e (edit: keeping this here, autocorrect lol) responsibility of resigning onto ordinary people instead of working conditions being hellish, the bosses being tyrants and the pay no longer being worth it, if it ever was. And that is including no matter your class save that death stalks the halls wherever you work. Only the ultra wealthy are insulted and even then not perfectly.

it does take some degree of willpower to most to actually switch functioning to "wait what I am being paid to do this" properly in such cases

one great trick to get there is to find things cool things to do that fool around our societal conditioning of work, like reading

or just slam down pure communism into the psyche and realize that you are reappropriating surplus value, that works pretty well too

the great resignation is truly such an amazing term that is almost psychotic in denying the possibility that people are not working because a loving lot of them died in a plague, got crippled in a plague, had to become caregivers because of the dead and/or survivors, became depressed, had work simply become anti-economical to them (literally became too poor to work - cannot provide the means to work by themselves), had to become caregivers because of those secondary factors, had to become informal labor because of secondary factors, had to reorganize their whole loving lives because of a once-in-a-century plague or its consequences, etc

my neighbor upstairs has brain cancer after losing her own mother to covid and her kids, young adults, had to become caregivers and earners pretty quickly. one of them quit their studies (which is a labor loss because student is considered an occupation for those purposes), the girl quit her job and these are people that are not going to reincorporate anytime soon

it takes a peculiarly shitbrained neoliberal worldview (like mckinsey) to think that the problems are simply limited to the conditions of the job itself. Material circumstances and analysis is too hard, welp, people are just quitting their jobs and that's that, a great resignation!
