Saw this last night with a group of 20ish people, almost universal opinion ranged from "it owns" to "it's probably the best possible filmed DUNC you're gonna get". I have zero complaints so I'm gonna go see it again ( but baked) over the wkend

I enjoyed it, though I do feel it was lacking in some ways. I did like the way how the Atreides were very fascist-aesthetic coded - it made me feel like even though they were the 'good guys', they are still not a force for good.

A nice little detail - Kynes words to Paul in thr testing station are the exact opposite of her line in the book. "I'm the imperial Planetologist, I'll be fine" vs "I'm fremen, I'll be fine" . It's a cute nod to the changes from the book, and how her character is all about being torn between two worlds. God drat Kynes was great.

Somewhere around when they got to Arrakis it hit me how insane it is that this movie exists at all, and in this scope. Watching this in imax, with the scale of the ships and the inherent ceremonial weirdness of the dune universe kept in tact, was really special. THAT SAID, i don't know what someone unfamiliar with the novels or either of the other 2 adaptations will get out of this because this was as much an adaptation of the novel as a pretty direct homage to Lynch's Dune.

I don't think they are particularly fascistic but their salute is basically future-space-seig-heil. They are a feudal state, that's not fascism. Everyone unquestioningly buys into hereditary succession. The state appears to exist exclusively of the military, but that's because the economy is entirely decentralised and the guilds owning the key bits are power centres in their own right. I think it also makes more sense - at that point in the story she's picked a side between the Emperor and the Fremen. A lot of the little changes made in the film are cutting things where characters arguably act stupidly, like Kynes thinking that he's untouchable, or Jessica going "gosh there's a spy in the household and I am a perfect lie detector and Yueh is the only person I can tell is lying, but I won't say anything about this because it might be embarrassing for him". Watched this for a second time and the score is really fantastic, really does a lot in setting the tone and atmosphere for the setting. Easily one of Zimmer's better and more creative scores in a long time.

I really enjoyed this one. I like big bombastic production design and everything felt tactile and chunky and dirty and clunky, like we were really on Arrakis looking at giant machines. I also like how the weirdness of the world came across really well, from the creepy interstellar space ships to the weird religions and ceremonies. It felt hard sci-fi but I could still feel like it was a world that could be real, that I could wrap my arms around to some extent. This will sound funny about a film I liked, but it was interesting to see a big blockbuster sci fi film that had almost no sense of fun. There was almost no swashbuckling, there were 4 minor jokes, but other than that, this film was no fun. Usually I hate that, but it kind of worked for me here. The world is harsh and alienating and impenetrable for the characters, so thematically it felt appropriate that our presence in the world is also a little alienated. If the production and sets and score and costumes were worse, this wouldn't have worked, but I enjoyed exploring this un-fun world. My biggest complaint was the fight choreography - it stunk. They put so much energy into making the Empire feel like a full world with history and then the fight styles, which canonically have history and constraints, they were just like "Eh, do some flippy twirlly poo poo and stab them like normal." I could watch Paul and Jessica exchange pregnant (!) glances for hours, but my eyes slid right off the fights. But, I'm a fight snob so that's my personal nitpick, it didn't ruin the experience for me.

The idea I got from the fight scenes was that in the far future, there is only dance. I think they got across that it requires intense training to break a shield in one fluid motion without getting stabbed for your trouble.

Fights would have been better for me if they weren't so bloodless. I remember thinking in the previews the little red effects on the shields was blood smacking against it and thought that was neat, but no turns out they're just indicators that an object is in the danger zone. Props to that one Fremen in the coffee cup ambush who punched a Sardarukar's helmet clean off.

Yeah the melee fights were really weak. There was really no style or kinetic oomph to them. Though i suppose it might be difficult to depict kinetic fights in melee against people who are shielded with anti-kinetic armor

I liked the choreography but the lack of blood was kind of distracting. I knew it was PG () going in and I have no issue with that, but seeing Duncan slit someone's throat and just have them fall down took me out of it a little.

My wife hadn't seen any previous adaptations or read the book and she was asking if we can watch it again because she loved it. My coworker was telling me last week that he's not huge on scifi and has tried to read the book a few times but always bounced off of it and had no interest, but apparently he watched it over the weekend and loved it as well. edit: I showed my wife the Lynch version of the Gom Jabbar scene for comparison and because I think that's one of the overall better scenes in that movie. She thought the hand burning poo poo was cool and thought McLaughlin was okay as Paul but thought the performances were stilted and the excessive voiceovers were embarrassing. Not to get too insufferably nerdy about it, but I don't think either the book or the movies give enough consideration to how different melee combat would be with or without shields. Going into Fremen backcountry, where they've grown up fighting without energy shields, should be as huge of a paradigm shift as when the Harkonnen reinvent artillery and the Atreides are like "well gently caress I've heard of artillery, like in books."

Seeing this on the big screen was so loving good. Saw it at home last week and then went out with friends last night. The booming with The Voice is so loving amazing. I need to get myself a proper stereo system at home but still - nothing beats a theater. I listened to the soundtrack on the way home and it's just so perfect. Surprisingly I found - the Dune 2 soundtrack WOULD fit certain scenes in the movie. It's a masterclass in world building. It'd be cool if someone put that music in the movie in a sorta fun edit on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxPJJyog-fw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZg20dKoNdo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yj8mlANqZwM But the entire soundtrack is good.

Has anybody seen or read anything about practical effects in this? There were a handful of shots where I wondered if I was seeing composited models. Though I might have just been looking for it because I ended up being really surprised at how many model shots were in BR2049.

I thought The Voice sucked poo poo in Lynch's Dune, because it was him not trusting the audience to understand a subtle manipulation of vocal patterns which supposedly allows the BG to manipulate people. But now after seeing Good Dune (2021) I realize that having The Voice as an effect is just fine as a cinematic device it just needs to be done well, and the less said about weirding modules the better

I really want to know this too, there were a lot of shots were I couldn't tell if they were practical models or VFX emulating practical models, it really leant a weightiness and tactility to a lot of the effects shots and it looked great.

villaneuve very vocally went practical wherever humanly possible, so i'd imagine most of what we're seeing is models + great compositing

My favorite effect was the missiles borrowing through the shields of the grounded Atreides ships. I loved the little detail of the shields containing the explosion around the ship before they fail and the explosion is released.

The fight scenes were a bit naff, if the shields don't neutralize kinetic force then shooting someone should be plenty effective, yet people were throwing each other around, bashing each other and parrying like no tomorrow, suggesting it disallows penetration but still transfers force to the shield wearer.

The knife fights are kinda just going through the motions, and there are a lot of them. It's high on the list of problems of the film, maybe at the top

While I agree that the fighting was mediocre, it doesn’t really bother me because it isn’t the point of the movie. I thought the new Bond was poo poo because he wasn’t doing sick moves like John Wick, but that’s kind of missing the point of Bond I guess.

I get being able to look past the knife fights, I mostly feel that way myself. But when the tension in the movie is always building up to a knife fight and the knife fight is always blah it's hard to say it doesn't lead to a structural problem

Daniel Craig broke THE BEAST RABBAN's nose in a fight scene and was constantly injuring himself doing stunts so I would assume so.

That's stone cold Fremen right there.

I think I count a half dozen knife fight scenes?
