looking at archive.org barstool.com doesn't appear to have ever been associated with barstool sports. The actual website is barstoolsports.com

well then, i guess this continues to not be news

There's this one small fastfood place in a tiny town in the Netherlands called Wendy's, named after the owner's daughter.

Some years ago, American fastfood giant Wendy's decided they wanted to expand to Europe. The Netherlands is generally seen as a good try-out place for expansion so they started there.
Dutch trademark laws say that no two companies in the country that offer the same kind of products or services can have the exact same name.

So American Wendy's immediately went for the top lawyers and pulled Dutch Wendy's into court... and lost because the Dutch company had precedence in the country, obviously.
Some years later they tried to get their trademark registered in the EU trademark office. However, registering a trademark in the EU office means you register it for every EU nation, meaning it should be valid in all of them.
More court cases were held about the Dutch situation, with American Wendy's claiming that Dutch Wendy's hadn't been using the trademark "normally".

This is about a clause in the law that says if a company isn't using a trademark for its intended purpose at all, another company can claim it. American Wendy's tried to claim that using it in only one town for one restaurant isn't "normal use". The judge completey disagreed, which means the EU application was cancelled in its entirety.

At that point, apparently, American Wendy's started offering loads of money to Dutch Wendy's attempting to buy them out. This isn't public information but some sources say $35-40 million.

The owner's point of view seems to be "I don't like bullies. If they had offered a buy out at the start I would've considered it. But they started by attacking me left and right through court cases. I'm gonna stand my ground now and not sell my restaurant or change its name for any money in the world."

Also, he is planning to or has already opened a second restaurant in the next town over.

Cream Finance was hacked again on 27th October 2021. Likely for the final time. The attacker stole $130m+ worth of assets from Cream’s lending protocol. The attack was executed over multiple transactions due to block gas limits, but the bulk of it happened in this transaction.

This was one of the most sophisticated and cleanly executed DeFi attacks. The summary of the attack is that the attacker borrowed $1.5b of Yearn’s yUSD vault shares against $2b worth of collateral. They then doubled the value of the shares atomically by donating yUSD to the yearn vault. This meant that their debt on Cream became $3b against a $2b collateral. They can now default and take home a sweet $1b profit. Cream only had $130m assets available for lending, so the attacker was limited to $130m profits.

funny related thing happened to McDonald's and their Big Mac trademark in the EU.

they went after an Irish restaurant named Supermac. the EU IP Office noted that not only was there not any potential for confusion, McDonald's had never actually had a restaurant named Big Mac and had no intention of opening one meaning that they had not fulfilled the requirements of EU law wrt the trademark for use as a restaurant.

but McDonald's had filed a single trademark application for Big Mac instead of filing separate ones for its use as a restaurant and for use as a food item name. when the EU said the trademark application was void because McDonald's didn't actually make use of the mark in the fields it said it did, it voided the whole thing and McDonald's doesn't have a trademark for Big Mac in the EU as a result. it is a free for all and Burger King was selling "better than a Big Mac" burgers for a bit to rub it in.

apparently this has completely upended trademark practice in the EU, with a lot of companies looking at their trademarks and realizing they made the exact same move as McDonald's and any serious enforcement fight risks losing the mark entirely.

too broad, probably. they could strip html tags from client-side text locally and on the server, but there's probably a terribly clunky reason why that breaks all chat formatting for npcs

Jewel

they dont strip html tags clientside because they use them for item links lol

quote:

if you type < before alt clicking an item you can see the raw html from breaking the code

also they failed to fix the image tag like six patches in a row because they keep trying to just text filter it it's a mess

also a new bug:

So apparently you can use HTML code to duplicate gold by "completing" a quest by hovering over a text string in the chatbox: https://youtu.be/_DWBtUqOXo0

totally understandable that you want to use some preexisting html-based renderer, but maybe just escape raw html in the text and then rewrite some select tags into the exact html you want like everybody else who’s thought about this for half a second

it is funny until you realize this game is made by amazon with a budget of tens of millions (if not hundreds) a year and all these novice mistakes really really shouldn't have happened

(the budget for AGS is ~$500m a year so it depends how much of the split it gets but its likely a lot)
