Roosevelt posted:hello thread It's less about the settings and more about the light you're able to get. In general though I'd recommend picking up a fixed focal length 'fast' lens like a 50mm f/1.8 because they're cheap and the large aperture allows you to take photos at lower ISO and faster shutter speeds. You get a bit more subject separation also. Something like an 85/1.8 would be even better, I don't know what exists in the canon space at what price point. Don't be afraid to look up third party lenses like tamron, sigma, etc. For actually shooting with the camera I'd set it to aperture priority and set it as wide as it can go (lowest number) for your indoor shots. Setting it to auto will probably just already do this since you'll be limited by light anyways.

Roosevelt posted:hello thread the secret to good cat photos is as much light as possible and as many photos as possible. the 4000D can sustain 3fps in continuous shooting, make use of it.

I shoot with my fixed lens 23mm f/2 Fujifilm x100f for shots like this or a lot of times the 35mm f/2.0 with my Fujifilm XT-3 like this shot. But I kind of like atmospheric photos.

We have a resident catographer in The Dorkroom who does amazing work. I just like a 50mm or equivalent generally good enough to get in and take some nice moments so long as the lighting is right. Poppy posing and staying very still for a long exposure Scoops complaining about getting his nails clipped while I fight with thin DOF for the lighting Same but I also missed focus

I use an Olympus E-M5 with a 25mm 1.2 lens. it might be a 10 year old model running on a small micro 4/3 sensor but I can just point and shoot and get decent results even inside with no natural light:

i use a google pixel 2, which is my phone, to take photos of my cats because i tried the whole dslr thing for ten years and rtealized I'm garbage at non-macro work! just flood everything with maximum light and fix it up later or tell your camera to do it for you

Agreed. Growing up I caught my old cat snacking on some string once and went to pull it out of his mouth, and he just sat there with a dumb look on his face as like 20 cm of intact, slime covered string came out.
