Smasher Dynamo
Oct 16, 2008

Eternal Commissioner of the Super League. A new avatar. A new age, of the same old embittered Smasher that failed to escape the bonds of the SL, FM3, Johnny Hopp and Eri Yoshida "The Knuckle Princess". "The flames of Smasher's ire scorch the skies... Igniting St. Bellhorn's funeral pyre."

We're back! I know this expansion thread is a bit later than usual, but I was very busy filing an appeal to Satan to get out of running the Super-League.

Apparently, however, our previous deal of him letting the Cubs win the World Series once in exchange for me running the Super-League for all eternity is valid and binding, though.

For those unaware, the Super-League is...complicated. It's baseball, but also there are occasionally robots, and all manner of other things, all being run on a quite old and not particularly nimble video game engine. In many ways, it's a vert slow-moving disaster. And you can get in on the ground 32nd floor!

So, follow the instructions below, pick teams, do your best, and, if you want or need more advice or guidance, go to the Super-League Discord. GO THERE NOW!

New Team Form

Fill out Now

This needs to be done to secure a spot in the Super-League

Teams Selected:

Pick eleven points worth of teams (twelve points for people who have never owned a Super-League team before), spread out over as many teams as you'd like. Hell, you could have eleven one-point teams if you really wanted.

Fill Out Soon

These items also need to be filled out, but not immediately, just as soon as you have some spare time

The Big, Big List of Feeder Teams

Pick eleven points of feeder teams, twelve if you've never owned a team in the Super-League.

If you have any questions about these feeders, please come to the Super-League Discord where I will answer your questions to the best of my ability. (Note: I may lack ability).

Those are just the teams that have already been taken by other people, since they're first-come-first-serve. There's always a bunch of good feeders left over unused though (some people have even won championships with them!) so don't worry about the ones that are taken.

Also hello newcomer(s), my name is Monicro (aka London) and I will be running the EC this time around. I hope to be a good babysitter for your fledgling diappointments.

Fledgling disappointments would imply I have any sort of hope to start with, but I enjoy doing the same thing over and over seeking different results, if only there were a word for that.

Oh, okay. So are other teams that aren't in the OP unavailable as well? Was scanning for some Expos squads but didn't see Nos Amours from 1981 nor 1994.

Yeah generally when they make up the feeder list it's a rotating selection of teams. Various factors like, "did another person take a team like this recently" and "are there any interesting players here" play a part.

The 97 Expos are kinda representing that era this time around. You lose Walker but you do get Pedro who's more effective in this setting

Okay so I'll start with:

1997 Expos
2015 Pirates

For 5 points, and continue sifting through the lists to see how I'll spend my other 7 as a newbie.

Edit: oh I'll spend 4pts on Griffey Jr. + ten teammates from '96-'00

Edit #2: Okay, final 3pts on Gwynn + ten teammates from '85-'89

Here's what I'd like my feeder teams to be. Should be 12 points worth, if I can still manage to add single digit numbers. It's questionable, so check my math.

1964 St. Louis Cardinals
1985 San Francisco Giants
1965 Boston Red Sox
1995 Oakland Athletics
2002 Milwaukee Brewers
1986 Toronto Blue Jays
1939 Boston Bees

Unfortunately, due to real-life circumstances of having to pick up Zodiac5000 from the bar, MURDER DEEZ NUTS has to withdraw from the Super League. All these teams are now available as feeders again.

Okay this sucks but I've determined I can't carve out time for this in my life rn. I apologize but I have to withdraw my team. Thanks for being understanding. Hopefully next league incarnation.

I know SL BBM can be a crap shoot but is it usually better to pick a player in their best season or the year before/year after?
Also, I realize age and career trajectory matter.

Let's use mystery player A:

25 - 150 OPS+
26 - 141 OPS+
27 - 136 OPS+

And then they have up and down seasons for 7-8 years.

As a related Q, how does the sim typically approach "young player with good results in chosen year, that we know became a 5x All-Star" and "veteran 5x All-Star with good results in chosen year, that we know declines every subsequent year".

Guess I'm unsure if it has a bias for/against "unproven" and/or "exiting their prime" talent.

As a general rule Mogul takes a holistic look at their whole career and places the player in one of three broad categories: rookie/pre-peak, peak, decline/end career. You generally want players who:

A. Have long careers where they consistently put up good numbers;
B. Be in the sort of "meat" of when they played their best. Some players peak later (Dazzy Vance) and some peaked early (Albert Pujols). There's a general plateau area where you're close enough and you get their "predicted" all-star values, with some variance due to a built-in margin so that you get variability between different sims, since baseball is very random too.

If you're not sure, safe bets are their 26-30 aged seasons. That's not to say players outside these years are unusuable; younger players unless they're prodigies will not perform to their absolute best compared with their seasoned counterparts, and older players will have degraded on their vital stats, including their ability to avoid injury (important since a player who broke his femur can't hit dingers for you). I run an ancient Stan Musial in the DH since his career runs from sometime between 10BCE to roughly the late Reagan administration, but his production was high even into his 40s so Mogul treats him kindly. But he's not gonna be an everyday player in the outfield.

It kind of does this to players, right?
The red line below is what I'd guess SL BBM would do to Bonds' career if I didn't know what Bonds was like in the SL.
It's never going to be this straight forward but it sort of recharts the player's current/future value based on where they are in their career and what they were like around that time in their career....?

kw0134

Yes, that would be the basic gist. The length of the plateau, how high it is, how sharply the sides slope up and down will vary according to a player's career, but you're not going to get a career year at the precise same time they had their historical career years. Bonds is also a bit of an edge case because 98% of players start as rookies, get experience and mature, then fade as their body winds down but he had two peaks, one early and one greater at an age when people retire after having coasted a few seasons of mediocrity. So Mogul does weird things with him.

The corollary is that selecting a player because he had that one year where the stars aligned and he won all the awards, then did nothing else of note, will backfire badly in Mogul.

Basically, a "tag team" is just a baseball team made up of the rosters of two Super League teams. So find yourself a partner (or just ask if anyone wants to team up), and get to work combining your rosters. The only real rule is covering roster construction. For the Tag Team Tournament, rosters are grouped into four clusters:

Outfielders + Catchers
Infielders + Designated Hitter
Starting Pitchers
Relief Pitchers

Each team must cover two of those groups. So if you have, say, two Babe Ruths and Yogi Berra, you should probably cover OF + C. If your rotation is garbage but your bullpen's okay, you should probably find a partner who can cover SP. Other than that, it's just baseball.
