Like Mario Kart 8 already has Link, Inklings, and Villager & Isabelle, plus some F-Zero stuff and the Amiibo costumes (and R.O.B. was in the DS one). Just go full Smash for the next game. Add in all the first-party reps and maybe some of the "easier" third-parties (Pac-Man's been in the arcade ones, Mega Man seems doable, maybe Sonic but he's got his own racers), karts themed after different characters and series, hand out some unique/semi-unique special items like Double Dash and maybe swap out some of the existing power-ups if you're on a non-Mario track.

Hey Mega Man has his own racer too!

Back in the Brawl days, whenever we turned them on, it was always with the caveat that we kept off all the lame items. Here's a list of them:
  • Banana
They were surprisingly fun. In contrast, in Ultimate, even turning on the Pokeballs was risky because there's a chance you'd get Exeggutor and that's easily the lamest item of them all - at least Goldeen didn't literally stop the match.

Exeggutor is fun because you can tech or wall jump off of him.

I really don't like some extremely overpowered legendaries. Some are fun, like Lugia, but Tapu Koko is essentially a win button with not much input or opportunity to adapt.

Also to this day I'm confused why the useless floppy fish they chose is goldeen and not magikarp. Were they trying to stop playground rumours of getting it to evolve to gyarados or something?

I think it, like a lot of Pokemon content that originated in Smash 64, is a reference to the the anime, where there was a running joke of Misty's Goldeen flopping around because she called it onto dry land. Magikarp, on the other hand, only showed up in the Titanic arc (where it was admittedly depicted as completely useless until it was kicked into becoming Gyarados).

Items are Ultimate's biggest flaw, in that instant win items spawn way to frequently even when you use the lowest drop rate. Hell, on the default setting new summons will often drop before the previous have ended. Items for each setting need to be tuned down, there should be a way to turn off specific Pokemon and assists like the other items, and it'd be nice if their was a way to adjust the individual drop rates of each item and summon, similar to how they handle stage music.

I’m glad I’m not crazy. I liked turning items on occasionally in the older games but they stuck rear end in ultimate. When I play someone online with them on, it’s an obnoxious race to grab them first and snowball to victory.

Medals only weigh one down.

My favorite and stupidest online match ever was against a Sonic player who had set their preferences to just one item, the extra life flag. Just ran away from me trying to grab those flags the entire match.

Regular items are hella loving fun, there's at least a little skill involved and you can do some ridiculous poo poo with them, but with trophies/pokemon there's sometimes no counter play so you don't get to play the game until they leave

I had to face an Assist Trophy Pokéball Rosalina who'd try to gravity pull everything to her. I beat her at her own game as Ness, since a lot of summons shoot poo poo that heal you.

They just seem way loving tuned up in this game. As mentioned the "low" setting seems to crank out items faster than the "normal" setting of previous games, and while pokeballs used to be some of the most fun items circa Melee, now pokeballs + assist trophies vary so wildly in power between "several completely useless things" and "something that will easily KO every other player" with the occasionally "completely grind the match to a halt" variation thrown in.

You're largely right that it's obviously not that big of a deal, but my casual group basically has them entirely off these days, or else we use a highly curated list set to 'Low', whereas in basically every previous game up to Smash 4 we just turned them all on or had a few off at most (I think as of Smash 4 we had around 5 things off, now half the list is blacked out on the rare occasion we even use items).

If you feel that the items are too powerful, it could mean that you've outgrown the style of play they are intended for. There is a selection of characters who produce their own items, and managing them is a skill all its own.

I feel like if you take the exact same item settings between Melee and Ultimate, you'll have vastly different play experiences. There's a noticeable difference, and it honestly feels less casual friendly when items become match-defining instead of match-enriching. And I say this as someone who never played a round of Melee or Brawl without them on high.

I don't think it helps that there are less "weak" items, and the strongest items feel more irritating than strong. I'd rather the power items be cool, impactful things like the Super Scope, the Warp Star, and the Hammer, instead of the strongest items taking away user control like the Beetle and Gust Bellows.

Everyone grows older in different ways. The items and hazards in these games have always been a sort of great equalizer, where anyone could win by being the first one to pick up a good item and throw it at a good time. The effects of those items have gotten bigger, and people talk about weeding out the "skillful" ones over the "free win" ones, but they still serve the same purpose. I'm sure there are people for who this is their first smash, and they love pulling a big item play with their friends. If you find that no longer suits you it's not unfair to say your tastes are evolving, and the wonderful thing about Smash is that it has many knobs and dials to tailor the game to whatever your tastes may be.

I don't mean what I say in a derogatory way, I'm just saying what I feel like I see: what you're looking for might be found in a different ruleset experience, and what's there instead is for the waves of gamers coming up behind you.

I've seen it.
Items are dumb fun and sometimes you want dumb fun. Sometimes you went less dumb fun, because of course a game with dozens of items are going to have a few annoying ones. Sometimes you want to be challenged as the source of your fun, and fostering a challenging environment is one where you play more on equal footing.

Getting bored or annoyed by items or a lack thereof doesn't mean much more than you want to try something else.

Items also aren't really good at balancing out casual games because experienced players can both utilize and adapt to items better than newer ones. A good player will still dominate with items, generally items just give an advantage to players in scenarios where they're mostly equal in skill.

I don’t discount this as partially correct, but again there was even a noticeable difference from Smash 4, which I played with the same exact group of adults as Ultimate only a few years before (and years become a lot shorter when you’re an old fart like me)

To be honest, I was kind of throwing everything at the wall there. I don't think all of those things necessarily have to be implemented, but do believe implementing at least one of them would change things for the better, for the reasons already stated. That said, so much of this game can be fine tuned to match the preferences of a variety of players, so it seems odd that items of all things are less granular when it comes to customization. I personally really love having dumb and even over powered items in casual play, but would really like the ability to make their spawns more rare so that they don't end up defining each, whole match. They should be more of a surprise when they come up, not something you can reliably wait to make an appearance. Being able to do this with the summons would also make pokeballs and trophies less OP in general, and allow for dumb gimmick matches like they do in some of the spirit battles (oops, all Exeggutors/Waluigis).

Back in the day you had a different kind of banana "Gros Michel'" which was sweeter with a thicker shell. Banana flavored candy etc is based on that. People back then also did not give a gently caress about littering fruit peels and cores. So this extra thick shell gets hard to see and super slippery on the cobbles and you get the human trope of slipping on banana peels. poo poo was really dangerous.

Since all of these bananas were clones they died of the same fungus. Now we main the "Cavendish" banana which isn't as big or sweet but is more resistent to that fungus. The thinner peels rot through or dry out instead of getting dangerously slippery. You can still buy Gros Michel online from hermetically sealed farms or something and they cost too much. A new fungus is threatening the Cavendish and they already have other worse bananas lined up to replace it.
