Ernie recognizes Akane, clearly telling us that they both come from the same "real" world and were isekai'd into the SRW30 world (twice, in Ernie's case). But this contradicts SSSS Gridman itself, since Akane looks completely different in reality. If anything, Ernie should recognize Rikka, Akane's true form (which would no doubt greatly confuse her).

I don't think SRW is taking the music video as canon, and there's nothing else that indicates that Akane looks different in the real world than she does in the dream world.

The original pilot was a German ninja, who conveniently wore a ninja mask everywhere.

kyoji wasn't really a ninja. that's just how he concealed his superhuman physique as a dg android. though, that doesn't explain how he had any insight into domon's advanced martial arts bottlenecks. but eh, plot holes and g gundam are old friends.

I mean, all of G Gundam's designs are ridiculous stereotypes, including the Shining and its samurai topknot. Taking one of them out of that context is a bad move, because it's only the fact that everyone is ridiculous that lets the individual ridiculous designs work. Football Surf Cowboy, an okay lumberjack, Omelette Du Fromage, and Codename: Sailor G all work because they have each other as a comparison point. Just taking one amplifies any problematic elements rather than downplaying them, no matter how you rewrite the context.

There's no reason for them, in the G Gundam universe, to be anything but ridiculous stereotypes pushed for tourism value, Yokohama Chinatowns in space. Colonies by necessity are urbanized, standardized climate-controlled spaces, with especially in G (as opposed to UC) a populace in which the richest and most internationalized escaped first, followed by a thoroughly proletarianized (and thus crammed into a way of living based on Western European urban traditions, while also being mashed together and de-localized into a collection like you'd see in an immigrant community) workforce necessary because labor must be compelled to maintain a survivability equilibrium higher than the flat 0 of space.

So you have at a minimum the same sort of filter as applied to people who came through Ellis Island, cranked up higher as there is no new or abandoned isolated land for them to settle as small groups from not just their home countries but their home regions, and that means Tequila Gundam as an expression of the same processes which give us the key national holiday of Mexican-American culture being celebrated on May 5th with sombreros and cold Coronas while the key national holiday of Mexican culture is celebrated on September 16th with marching bands.

This angle could have been pushed more in the background, with groups and side characters legitimately mad that their only choice to survive was to emigrate and play themselves in a giant flying Vegas theme casino and conflict between ones that wanted more honest old ways vs. ones who wanted an even share of the fruits of industrialized monotony, but lol at the idea of getting funding to address that in 1994 when the world was telling itself we'd never ask those questions again, much less weaving it in with the flamboyant cast-of-hundreds tournament structure of Domon's story.

You don't really need to conceal a superhuman physique in G Gundam, since Master Asia and Domon were completely normal rear end humans who could punch mobile suits to pieces. Schwarz also used ninja techniques inside his Gundam.

I mean, we never have reason to believe he wasn't trained as a ninja. Especially not with how the Devil Gundam functions better with expert martial artists in the pilot seat.

He's just a science ninja, because all of Domon's childhood friends and family members are much, much smarter than he is.

Speaking of G, something that I liked about its crossovers in T was that the El Dorado V weren't the only heroes from their generation. Master Asia being around meant that, like the protagonists and the decade long trio, you had people who could share experiences from back then, rather than them being an isolated part of the world. You still get some of that with the elderly Victory characters, but it's much weaker since, well, they're much less interesting than Master Asia.

I got that and the music video (which... goes directly from that) conflated, it turns out!

Also, it turns out they answer it later in SRW30 anyways. Neither of them looked the same at the time, but Akane's personal looks is not what Ernie recognized.

It's in the tutorial but basically the supporting unit has to be
  • adjacent (diagonals don't count)
  • active (hasn't moved yet or is on Multiattack or Zeal or whatever)
  • able to use a weapon with the appropriate range
  • able to enter the supportee's terrain - this is the one that probably gets people the most because it generally comes down to "units that can't fly can't support units who are flying," which you can get around if your flying unit can land

Synthbuttrange

I'm kind of surprised how little terrain generally matters in the game to the point where a robot sinks into water it's a rare handful of occasions

Caphi

Most of the cool robots can fly now. It's mostly Gundam where widespread atmospheric flight doesn't really become a thing until Victory (or, recently, Hathaway). Flight being introduced to Geass and Mazinger is kind of a big deal but those are all in sequel land now. Sometimes flying robots get a B in the air so you want them to walk except in specific cases, but even that's just Gridman in 30, I think.

That might be one reason no one cares about terrain anymore, because the majority of robots fly now anyway so the move penalties just punish MS and Armors (see also: water stages), but that's throwing out terrain bonuses as a carrot.

Kchama
Jul 25, 2007
The weird-rear end thing is that they basically reduced the bonuses terrains give by a lot. HP/EN Regen terrain is super rare and +10% EVA/Def is generally the max bonus you get now.

That one mission where you start over water was funny just for J-Decker and Build Tiger stuck at the bottom of a lake while everyone else turbomurders the enemies. They'd only just gotten to shore when the mission was over.

It is really weird that if you get the secret for Chronicle he downgrades from the last mobile suit he has when you last fight him. Were they afraid a middling mobile suit was going to be too strong?

Not quite, in that Dr. Yotsuya didn't create Combattler V (that was the late Dr. Nanbara, Chizuru's grandfather and the namesake of the team's base, the Nanbara Connection), he's just their engineer/mission control/manager. I watched the episode featuring Gargantua (the weird out-of-nowhere robot you get in SRW3 that for some reason Raideen characters can pilot), and it was less about the Battle Team and more about Yotsuya busting his rear end trying to get some people to do loving anything to help lighten the burden on the five teenagers who are literally the only people opposing the ongoing alien invasion. His alcoholism seems pretty appropriate, in light of that.
