i literally got turned away from the first place i tried to get a flu shot because my insurance wouldn't cover me there

thanks for making me spend more time going to a second place instead of just getting a shot in the grocery store while i was shopping

every time i go i just give them my insurance card, but they don’t like that because apparently i have a separate prescription card that they want instead (which i don’t keep with me since i don’t have prescriptions).

as long as i’m complaining about insurance, it bothers me that my work’s plan has a single option, a married option that costs a bit less than double the single option, and then it jumps to a “family plan” that is 3.5 times as much. so it sucks for parents with one child which is bullshit imo.

the doctor billing i see living in nyc is insane. i'm on a HDHP with a mental health buy-up, but my work provides a HRA to cover the deductible so i see all the bills. my psych charges $400/$500 a call. thankfully it's a $20 co-pay. if it wasn't i'd be such a non-functioning sad sack cause lol at paying that OOP.

i haven't gone to the doctor in awhile due to luck but also having gotten hosed the last 2 times i went, and i inherently do not trust doctors and insurance companies not to gently caress me over financially

i completely understand people who did not get vaccinated because they thought the same thing would happen to them (99% in my zip code baby) as illogical as that is

my favorite was some years ago when i was getting allergy shots and changed jobs.

the doctor's office billed the insurance a $55 rack rate per shot. old job insurance paid the doctor $13 and i had no copay; the doctor just wrote off the other $42. new job insurance paid the doctor $0 and then i had a $25 copay, so now the doctor gets $25 all out of my pocket for doing nothing different.

i asked if i could just pay $13 cash on the spot since they were gladly taking that much before, and it would save them the hassle of dealing with insurance. but as you would expect the answer was no.

yeah i went to CVS last month to get mine, made an appointment, blocked off time on my work calendar. when i got there the pharmacist tells me my insurance company and CVS got into a stalemate and the flu shot wouldn't be covered. was not going to pay $40 for it out of pocket out of principle

pointed out that my insurance card has the literal CVS logo on the front of it so you'd think it wouldn't be a problem. turns out that's just because they're the pharmacy benefit provider and the flu shot would be billed through medical even though you went to a CVS to get it

we're looking at insurance plans for post-marriage and it's likely we'll just end up on mine with the self plus one option, but yeah, looking at family plans is a big jump from two. i think it actually more than doubles for me to go from one person to two which is some bs

also i'm supposed to pay $40 for specialists, and in three or four visits to an ortho, i haven't paid a cent. the EoBs have shown they're just denying all charges or something i don't quite understand, so i'm looking forward to dealing with that starting in a few months

the act of administering the shot is a medical procedure and thus billed separately. cvs knows they can get that fee so they arent just gonna do it for free.

I don’t follow any forum threads closely enough to have concrete opinions about specific posters these days, but being smart is by no means a guarantee that a person can’t do massively frustrating bullshit. specifically I’m thinking of weird/covert emotional processing and bad interpersonal boundaries.

one really cool thing is that it’s possible to combine some amount of bad faith and emotional / interpersonal problems for a genuine poo poo sandwich

arguably bad faith is a semi-covert game of emotional and/or political rewards
