Person of Interest absolutely hits this sweet spot. She’ll like it for the procedural stuff you’ll like it for the sci-fi elements.

Also seconding the Supernatural and Psych recommendations.

Elementary is also good.

You may want to give Dispatches from Elsewhere a shot.

Anne with an E is great, it's a retelling Anne of Green Gables but with a lot more focus on social and cultural issues. Given the recent discoveries of mass graves at Canadian Indian Residential Schools it makes one of the final seasons storylines even grimmer.

I was like :ohdear: every time there was a sentimental moment because I knew what was coming. But I did love Andy and Kyle going like full bounty hunters on all the Chuckys.

Someone posted a clip from Studio 60 where one of the actors parents goes off on him about how his brother was in Iraq and he was just goofing off on TV and the consensus around it was "wow, Sorkin was so crazy, what an insane thing!". And yes Sorkin is crazy for a lot of reasons, but poo poo like that was absolutely the norm at the time. People treated the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan the same way as when their team won the Super Bowl or NBA Finals, people were absolutely going nuts. Hell, I had a friend in college who had a brother in Afghanistan and he quit talking to his parents because if he dared complain about an upcoming exam or a heavy course load his parents would just say "at least you aren't in a warzone like your brother".

I remember when the initial Iraq invasion was happening there was a teacher who would start every class for a few days somberly updating us on American casualties that day and saying he understood if we needed time to grieve or talk about it before starting class.

Something from Studio 60 that I remember: Sorkin had been dating an actress, but they had broken up, and she later (or maybe while they were together?) did a pictorial for Maxim or one of those mags. So Sorkin wrote a plot about one of the Studio 60 characters was going to pose for Maxim, so he had two of the other characters (male, of course) preach to her how no one would ever respect her again if she did that.

It really is. Having been forced to watch it with relatives I can say it’s decent. Use of Native casting is cool too. Some beautiful scenery to boot but fairly tame with sex. Same relatives really like Justified too. Fargo season 1 and 2 they mixed well with but they did not like season 3. Both are far better than the Rookie or Magnum PI boomer fodder.

As far as branching out goes: Expanse I love but it had mixed results with them. If you have any Native family or just really familiar with them and Reserve culture I’d say try Reservation Dogs. Comedy and no giant mystery but really good and a bit poignant. Other outside choice is Wayne. Patriot is good but I had two who LOVED it and more that hated it. For All Mankind is a safe bet as is Ted Lasso. The Americans can hook boomers like crack but more conservative ones might think a little racy. Only Murders in the Building is cute but seems if your relatives are more country like mine they might feel it’s a bit cityfied. I’ve got some freakin hicks in my family.

For some reason (probably because it came out last year when I was a little distracted for some reason) I only now discovered the show How To with John Wilson on HBO. It's really hilarious and reminds me a lot of Nathan for You, and of course I see that Nathan Fielder was a producer on it. Really happy I discovered it now, since the second season is about to start.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and he throws out some very dubious facts, like how the U.S. is "178th" in the world in infant mortality. What?
