Ed was a little much for me, but I at least have to give it props for taking Julia in a different direction.

It's kinda whatever though. I'm not a cinema person, but I was put off by the weird camera shots and what-not. Otherwise, it felt exactly like watching an anime and anime isn't very good so

Vicious is goofy looking. Like for those who've watched it go back to the scene where he's in his car on the phone to Spike - his head is almost cartoonishly too big for his body. I can't help but see it in later scenes as well but that's when it stuck out for me. I'm up to episode 8 and I'm still having a good time, although the Blade Runner lines seemed a little forced, also Vicious still has the big head cheat mode going on while he's sitting down with the Eunuch, I think maybe it's the suit or the hair or his jawline but it's way outta proportion

I'm normally in the ugh remakes are dumb camp, especially when we have the originals, but I'm enjoying this adaptation. The Cosplay remark isn't outta line and that's not helped by the budget and cinematography, but it feels earnest, the cast are having a good time and I'm too old to get up in whether it stays true to the source material argument ( also I could take or leave Edward but my 9 year old son with ASD/AHD/Anxiety really loves/identifies with Ed and keeps asking me when they show up ).

Anime proportions and hair colours never look right in real life. You'd need a 7 foot tall skinny guy with a very specific skin tone for his proportions and hair color to look good.

Most shows aren't direct adaptations of a cartoon where we already have direction/score etc. to compare it to - which creates a larger bias/shift than other adaptations from books and comics.

On the topic of Spike having a death wish, he very much feels like they’re trying to write him and Jet as a little more Riggs and Murtaugh

I am the sexiest poster in the world!
I think the bit at the end of the season just really doesn't translate into live action at all, but I'm willing to acknowledge that's a snap judgment made from a very short amount of footage. If they can make that work in season 2, it'd go a long way towards making the show really shine.

I also think that there really needed to be much better plotting and editing, in terms of explaining things to the viewer or transitioning between scenes. The kind of parallel narrative they had going already made things tough in that regard, but there were many times where I just went "Wait, the episode ends here?" or "How did this thing end up happening?" I think most shows go too far out of their way to explain every little thing to the viewer, but I felt like this show went too far in the other direction. The bebop anime's endings could be sudden, but they never left me feeling like something was missing. I guess that's partly because there was so little serialization to those episodes and they were much more self contained.

I'd be thrilled to see this story given a chance to tell itself across three full seasons while adapting basically every episode with some of the material mixed up or added to. Ideally that would also involve a budget boost. I've heard complaints about the costuming and sets, but really all I want is for them to be able to afford truly kickass space stuff here and there and generally make the CG elements look that extra bit better.

I think there's elements of this show that people have put a lot of effort into, from acting to costuming to shot composition. The endless dutch angles feels a little much, but at least they're going for something.

But then Spike looks at a woman and says 'you remind me of someone' and as if that wasn't unsubtle enough we whiteout to a flashback with that cheesy smear filter that you haven't seen since the 90s and it's just TRASH, like it was made by amateurs.

Or the dialogue....
"Blackmail?"
"Well, you're black and male!"

It's just this jarring combination of 50% talented, passionate filmmaking and 50% the time the Nostalgia Critic guys tried to make a movie.

I'm probably reading too much into it, but Faye, amnesia aside and assuming she's still reasonably fresh from coming out of cryo, is a character out of time. She has a dated dialogue she's the 90's era character in a world where everyone talks like it's 2021. It's a reach I know but it's clearly a conscious decision to give her patois that seems horribly dated.

if that was their intention they completely failed because she is less super-90s and more acts like she teleported in from the set of one of the deadpool movies

One thing that struck me in the establishment of the scene was that opening with the action scene really was set up to tell a lot about Jet and Spike's work dynamic, their attitude toward the bounty, and of course the corporatized nature of the setting. Also it was a sorta gradual tease in of the whole mix of run-down 20th century skins on high tech environments. Guys with familiar 20th century guns having it out in a slightly out of date looking casino, until someone walks in with a disruptor cannon, shoots a hole in the side of the space station, and nearly gets them all ejected into vacuum. All the while, the crooks are weirdos and losers and the bounty hunters are a dysfunctional squabbling partnership even despite being entirely competent at a lot of things. It set the tone for a lot of what the setting is and the mix this version of it is focusing on.

I rewatched the first episode with some people who had no idea what the original show was, and this is dead one. The intro is great for those kinds of folk, both audibly smirked when it was revealed the casino was in space. One said "ok, I'm sold".

Honestly agree on the choreography to some extent. & yeah, that does seem the switch that's dividing people here. Whether you can see this as it's own thing, or whether you view it as the high school play version of something brilliant.

imo tho grown adults pretending to be cats is intrinsically more goofy than people pretending to be anime people.

Live action anime is perfectly doable, I think the Kenshin movies are very good for what they are, of course the difference there is faithful adherence to the source material, did you hear Kenshin spouting cool dumb phrases like “What the actual gently caress” for no purpose.

This could of been done fairly well the main issue is they just didn’t want to pay or think it was necessary to get the proper talent both on screen and in the writing room.

So in the end it comes off like a bunch of dumb rear end cosplayers got their hands on CGI

Kenshin is also a historical setting so that’s got less leeway, it’s not just about being faithful to the source

Maybe it gets better, but the first episode was so offputting and painful that I have no drive to find out. I'm not a gigantic fan of the original, but it nailed the vibe it was going for. This show's vibes are hosed. Kanno's music still owns though.

Lol the opening of the show is amazing in building up on the store heist from the anime while not actually expanding on anything the original heist shows. They just made it flashier and more violent for the hell of it in a fancy setting to flex some decent vfx. The original laid the dynamic of Jet/Spike perfectly and in this one they just banter and fight.

All cool with no substance.
