The word epic, in its modern usage, is resistant to explicit and precise definition. Any such attempts either fail to fully encompass it, or encompass too much. You can understand it through only example. Movie trailers are epic, as is their music in particular1. Bacon is (obviously) epic. The Joker is epic in all his forms2. According to exemplar theory, we gain a sense of the category of "epic" through these and other uncontroversial examples.3

Another curious feature of epicness is that it is fully self-guaranteeing as a descriptor. If you call something epic in good faith, that thing must be epic, and indeed becomes epic through the act of labeling it as such. You can clearly see this in Papa John's Epic Stuffed Crust pizza.4. It would not be epic if not marketed as such. It would merely be another crust option.

More to come.

The dialectical struggle of history has always, essentially, been a question of how to apply justice to matter. Take away matter and what remains is justice.

Like its cousin aesthetic category of realism, a "hyper" form of epicness exists. Hyperreality5 could be said to be too real, so that it is no longer as realistic as realism, and hyperepicness is similar. To demonstrate, we can turn to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010)6. Its poster claims it is an epic of epic epicness, which sounds epic indeed. But by gilding the lily in this way, even though the film is undeniably epic, it becomes less epic than something more traditionally epic, such as the 300 Spartans of Thermopylae or the SPARTAN super-soldiers of the Halo franchise.

the SA vs. reddit animus itself feels like a 2010-era throwback. probably peaked with the campaign against /r/jailbait. nowadays, who feels any kind of way about reddit anyways? all of SA's jokes about reddit (le epic bacon and etc.) are just tired old tropes that are years out of date, and i'm sure their stereotypes about us are the same. cringe content has moved on

Correct. By the time these characteristics of Reddit culture were widely recognized and mocked, they had already fallen out of fashion on Reddit itself.7 The internet impact of the 2010 Redditor and the subsequent paths memetic evolution took to ideologically capture people with similar neuro-sociological profiles is mostly outside the scope of this thread. All that concerns us is how Reddit's le narwhal bacon period influenced the history of epicness.

I posit that it immediately preceded the Last Epic Maximum that occurred in 20138. Just as the greatest point of capitalism corresponds to the apogee of its contradictions according to Marx, the greatest point of epicness is its greatest moment of self-contradiction, which must be when both wet shaving with straight razors and having a huge beard were somehow simultaneously in fashion. Therefore, le bacon narwhal was a sort of middle period which bridged the gap of early epic Colbert Report and Nolan Batmans of the late 2000s, to the epic Terry Crews Old Spice Body Wash commercials of the early 2010s. After that peak, epicness waned until it enjoyed a brief resurgence with kekistan and lib-pwning, which led to the election of president Donald Trump, itself an epic event.9

To gain a complete understanding of the ontology of epicness via its historical progression, it may help to look at examples that are more contemporary. Here are a few things that are varying degrees of epic from the past two years:

  • The release of Kanye West's album Donda10
  • The Jan. 6 capitol riots 11
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Sped-up lip synching on TikTok12
  • COVID

There was a time in living memory when it was controversial to suggest that a woman could be epic. That's why I'd like to take a moment to look at the intersection between epicness and feminism.

It's commonly and erroneously reported that Joan of Arc (1412 - 1431) was the first epic woman. Critical historiography, however, reveals that she was not epic during her own lifetime and only became epic posthumously. The first attestation of her as epic was in Shakespeare's Henry VI, written over 150 years later, and even that was questionable. In actuality, the first epic woman was probably Catherine the Great (1729-1796).

Until the 20th century, though more and more women were becoming epic, it was mostly restricted to rulers and writers, such as the aforementioned Catherine the Great and Jane Austen.13 The women's suffrage movement in the early 20th century appeared epic to some at the time14, but hindsight has shown that it was largely not an epic affair. The first moment of widespread female epicness occurred with second-wave feminism in the 60s; however, its most epic feature, bra burning, was not actually a widespread practice.15 True female epicness blossomed in the 90s with girl power, when women showed they could kick just as much butt as men while being martial artists, superheroes, or vampires/vampire-slayers. Sometime in the 2000s women achieved epic parity with men, and in the 2010s actually became even more epic than men. This can be seen everywhere from female Ghostbusters, to Hillary Clinton's fight song, to the brave women speaking out against the satanic Bill Gates COVID vaccine in PTA meetings and town halls across the country.

1912: Georgia O'Keeffe's whole schtick.
1950: Mother Teresa is wholesome 100. Faith in humanity restored!
1987: Margaret Thatcher says there's no such thing as society (the yin to the Joker's yang)
1993: Lorena Bobbitt commits one of the most epic crimes ever.
2008: Twilight: Breaking Dawn is released, followed three years later by Fifty Shades of Grey.
2016: Hillary Clinton becomes the first American woman to lose a presidential election.
