Trying to make predictive measurements on a sample size of like twenty games at most of a team where injuries, weather, outlier performances from individuals, and like fifty other factors can easily influence a game to the point where it's never unfathomable that a weak team can upset a strong team. Advance stats don't matter when your quarterback chokes in the playoffs or half your defense is dead or you drew the short straw and have to play the Patriots.

I'm convinced that advance stats were originated by Bills fans with super bowl PTSD to help explain how good their teams actually were instead of just stamping FOUR LOSSES IN A ROW on the city's national landmarks

Aaron Schatz is a Patriots fan, and the literal reason he began the process was to prove Ron Borges wrong that the Pats missed the playoffs in 2002 because they couldn't establish the run, and basically turned into a process to show that traditional stats hosed things up and there were teams that did things a much smarter way that wasn't being measured. Sour Diesel posted:dvoa was made to prove converting first downs was good Yeah. And I mean it sounds stupid, but 20 years ago it was real common for talking heads to say you need to take deep shots for stupid as gently caress reasons instead of converting 3rd down into 1st so you could have 3 more chances to score points. I guess it's like how in baseball teams used to hate walks or something? I don't know I watched a couple of Moneyball clips on youtube once.

Schatz has also been pretty vocal over the years about how DVOA or some stat is usually showing whatever Patriot team is the greatest of all time at converting 2nd and 3 in the 2nd quarter of divisional road games or whatever. I also remember him getting a ton of air time and attention for being one of the first and biggest defenders of Belichick after the 4th and 2 game in 2009.

I don't see how the Lions pass up on Aidan Hutchinson. Hometown hero from the big college in the area? Extremely productive, top tier athlete? There'd be a riot if Kayvon was picked instead of him.
