Do not, my friends, become addicted to presents. They will take hold of you, and you will resent their absence.

For those that are late -

This is a chat thread for anyone who reads AI. We talk about computers, life, how much alcohol we drink, where absolutly nothing of remark was chatted about last month, delete your social media - it makes your brain good again, Mad Max fan fiction, cycling, pets.... just imagine this as one large garage and we are all pretending to work on some broken rear end Falcon Coupe while talking poo poo about anything that comes up. Anyone who is just wandering by, stop and say hello! We don't bite and we're a pretty chilled out bunch of normal people.

Also while you are chatting, why not take part on the AI Sheep Game?

2021 has been an outright loving awful year. Take time to say hi to your fellow AI posters and let's give 2021 the Goatse on it's way out. And yes I stole the OP from 2015

That's some good Dadding right there.

We just chilled outside on Thanksgiving and let my son run around, but it was chilly, so we put my daughter in her halloween lion costume since it's basically a fleece sack. She was so cozy she fell asleep with me holding her. :3:

So much this.

Clean up your social media, unlike/unfollow almost everything, unfriend anyone toxic, use the "hide all from..." function liberally.

I've cut down my FB to basically only follow local concert venues and festivals, everything else is gone and ignored. No Twitter, no Instagram, no anything else.

It's so nice.

This. They do give you more tools to control your feed than people give them credit for, you just have to y'know, use them.

- Cull who you follow. If you don't want to unfollow because it will cause unnecessary drama (family etc) then "hide all from". Same with pages you Like.
- Cull groups. Again, for those you can't avoid (like say the local neighbourhood group etc where you want to stay in the group for when you need it), one one of the group posts in your feed, click on the three dots and "Unfollow" the group. You stay a member but it doesn't show in your feed, you just go via the Groups link to find. Definitely don't follow news outlets on Facebook, they're there specifically to "drive engagement" aka let commenters get all hot and bothered, AND they spend money with Zuckerberg to do so.
- Manage notifications. This depends on your workflow and what you want to see or not. Maybe turn them all off. Maybe have Messenger on and that's it. Probably useful to get one when you're tagged/mentioned so you can deal with it. Do you want it via email or phone notification? Maybe event invites to email since they're less time sensitive. Tags/mentions might want dealing with sooner eg untag yourself from photo. Figure out what works for you I'm not your supervisor.

For all the bitching about Twitter, in the same manner, it is what you make of it. Is your Twitter feed garbage? Why are you following garbage people then? That's your dumb fault! Unfollow the garbage! Turn off RT's if that's the source of garbage. Don't use the official apps they suck too. Tweetbot on iOS and Mac is the best. Dunno what you do on Windows or Android. Still no good? Then stop using it! No one else cares if you do or not.

Not trying to be an apologist for Big Social here but your feed is made up of what you put in it. (Yes they do shady poo poo to shovel poo poo at you. But give them less targets to aim for and the less poo poo lands on you.)

I use Twitter and like it but I only follow friends and accounts that are creative or interesting. Also the only notifications I get on my phone are for texts and absolutely nothing else. I tell everyone on messaging apps that if you need me it's ok to text otherwise I'll stop by when Im in the mood for it.

Twitter is fantastic for live updates on developing emergencies or staying on top of stuff as it happens in general. Some science stuff I follow is fantastic and you hear about it from principal scientists/groups pretty much as fast as you possibly can, sometimes it won't hit a news site or a mainstream forum for a day. You can sometimes directly engage with questions too.

It can also make you weep for humanity if you stray even a little bit.

The political craziness and pseudoscience is strong.

Speaking of both of those, it sounds like Dr. Oz is running for senate in PA.

I went the other direction:
- removed almost anyone who posted stupid conspiracy theory or racist poo poo since 2015 (there are a few left, mostly because I keep them under observation in case they're going to report me to the town for too many unregistered cars or something, and family.). I did not take into account politics at all. This resulted in losing dozens of trump people... A couple Bernie and Green party people... And no mainstream Democrats. I was sad I lost the Bernie and Green people but they wouldn't stop making GBS threads my feed up with altmed nonsense so bye.
- am extremely choosy about who I will add. I used to add anyone with a car in their profile picture basically. It was a disaster.
- join a ridiculous number of shitposting, lefty, and car groups
- report every spam page that sponsors crap into my feed, not because I think it'll get taken down but because it wastes Facebook's time and the screen after the report submission button has a block button on it, which is the only way you can block pages
- tell Facebook every annoying ad is irrelevant. That's really the only "hide ad" category I think they care about because it means I'm not interested and won't buy the product.

That being said I'm currently on a 7 day ban for having been racist against... Americans, so gently caress Facebook anyways. What a poo poo hole run by jerks, I hope they get broken up like AT&T.

Aaaaaargh.

I’m *still* chasing treatment for an irritating problem in my back.

I've seen a specialist, i've had scans and I know what's up and what's needed. For six weeks i’ve been reminding my specialist about a referral i'm supposed to get for a hospital that can do the treatment, and only today have I received back a curt “please call x hospital and ask for y department” email from their secretary.

Six weeks it's taken! Using private health for "better service" than the NHS (from my employer - in the UK)! and i’ve got to do the case management running around by myself! Gah. God forbid if I were actually ill or something.

My wife has a chronic illness that means she has to see at least 6 different specialists. None of them will talk to each other or the insurance company so she is her own case manager while barely being able to function some days. Private healthcare in the UK is a joke because it is just NHS doctors moonlighting for extra money in a lot of cases. I know of a couple of private hospitals that are next door to an NHS hospital that just take people who don't want to wait for their procedure on the NHS with the same staff with the time difference being like a week or two. This is for elective and low priority things because if you have something that needs surgery today you will get it on the NHS.

In ye olde America you have all the hassle of trying to get care while potentially being out thousands for the privilege. Getting my head around the healthcare system was the biggest culture shock when I moved to the US. Just to finish this tale with my favorite example of how insane things are in the US. I had someone who needed an MRI but their insurance wouldn't cover it. So I pointed out they could fly to the UK, get an MRI same day privately and fly back the next day for a fraction of the cost of an MRI in the US without insurance.

OK so this is a weird one but i now have a toddler as a major part of my life. a while ago a friend and her partner broke up because he is an absolute dickhead. (she made some aita posts https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAssh...utm_name=iossmf and https://www.reddit.com/r/AmItheAssh...utm_name=iossmf ) over the last few months i have become more and more fond of the little one and have made the commitment to be there for her. what should i get her for christmas so she becomes as car-brained as me. she already calls me dadadadadadada. i have no interest in a romantic relationship with the mother but i have been around a lot as backup when the shithead comes around to visit because i have nearly a foot on him with height, she doesnt have many male friends and the small sticky one really likes me. i was mainly wondering what to get the sticky one for christmas, i was thinking a toy dump truck (shes 20 months old), i had a toy engine with tools that made noises when you used them but i cant find a modern equiv.

tldr: i have semi-accidentally become a surrogate father and have no idea what to do for christmas

Shipping cars internationally is a pain in the arse. If you are moving then there will be a lot of expenses and hassles to deal with. The question is does shipping a car that is still available new worth the hassle?

Here in Canada, you have a family doctor whose job it is to co-ordinate with the specialists. Our provincial government is in charge of healthcare with money provided by the feds. The current government lead by the worst human on the planet is simultaneously trying to bring in for-profit healthcare to "compete' with the public system while simultaneously trying to drive out doctors and nurses by cutting doctor pay and seeking retroactive pay cuts from the nurses.

I went into the hospital in mid September with a bi-lateral pulmonary embolism. Within a week of getting out, all of my specialists had contacted me to see how i was doing. I'm pretty happy with the Canadian system and I'm terrified with how much damage the greedy ideologues in power until 2023 can damage it by the time we can remove them.

They noticed tumors in my spine in the CT scan for my lungs. got out of the hospital into October and doctor ordered a nuclear bone scan. they called me last week to come in for it and i just talked to the doctor. I have spinal tumors on a number of vertebrae, luckily they had enough recent chest x-rays to see that they are stable in size so not likely cancerous or a sign of cancer. Likely benign spinal hemangioma which they can't really do anything about because it's a tumor inside the bone. So good news no cancer, and a possible explanation for the back pain I've been experiencing for a number of years.

Have you heard of prepping your welds?

Is this yours? What the hell is it?

Krakkles
May 5, 2003

Yes, yes, and I basically just wanted to see if I could attach the two (scrap) pieces and fill in the gaps (which I did).

Notable wrongness that I’m aware of (additions welcomed):
  • didn’t grind metal clean first
  • no attempt to remove slag after welding
  • the last one (front center) I blew through the smaller piece (I think because the work piece was hottest by this point)
  • Hit the last one again (without cleaning in between) to try to fill it back in, which resulted in significant porosity

Basically I was just loving with my welder to try to get back into it. I also welded some beads on scrap, filled in a drilled hole, stuck some thread on scrap, and mostly destroyed an old drill bit trying to weld it to scrap.

But I welded, and the actual attempts at beads were ok.
