I haven't really played an immersive single player rpg since skyrim, but i always liked how they at least tried to make npc's seem like they have lives. they wake up and have a daily schedule and then go back home at night. and they follow you around if you try doing suspicious poo poo. it was obviously far from perfect but it really made an improvement over the typical "this merchant stands at his fruit cart 24/7 day and night" thing. doesn't seem like anyone's trying to do that anymore, but i also haven't played anything modern because every ambitious game seems to launch as a pile of poo poo these days.

I've bought and played Hollow Knight at the recommendation of pizza.bat et al. It's a fun game and I've reached past the mantis boss fight. I was wondering when the subversion of expectations starts and where the breathless love for it is. It's a nice souls-like metroidvania don't get me wrong!

I don't know what subversion of expectations they're talking about either. I just liked how consistent the mechanics and gameplay were throughout.

I bounced off of it the first time because I got lost after the first boss, and then tried to facetank everything.

there's no real subversion of expectations. it's just a very good platformer that punches above its small indie developer weight

the backgrounds and stuff are great. animation is kinda Flash-like which isn't great. upgrades/customization are cool but some QoL stuff having an opportunity cost isn't as great. i thought the difficulty curve was perfect....until i hit the wall mentioned above

it's just a good game and it seems really really great if you're expecting a mediocre one. if you're expecting a masterpiece it might be underwhelming

i got hooked when there's this part where the ground breaks away cutting off a passage. instead of going to the next area i fell into the dark tense place whose name i don't remember

i didn't have a lantern yet

i fought my way out of that. after that i wasn't near as afraid to die/lose money, and i was a lot better at the general mechanics. that whole "gently caress you i will liiiiiiive" thing was a unique and fun experience, even though i would never recommend anyone follow my example

there's one or two really good fakeouts that only work because they're so rare. the breathless love is because it's just an incredibly well put together game for such a small team. the big thing that i think endears them so much love is the game is much larger than you think and the game is consistently high quality throughout the entire experience

i mean, yeah, but also it is pretty subversive about it in an interesting way. i think my favourite moment in the game was the emotion when it gave me the "The World's Most Laughable Centrist" achievement. legit getting trashtalked by my entertainment product. also of course the overall plot very much revolving around a failed revolution, and a doubly-failed revolutionary doing stupid pointless violent things. it certainly does not pander.

the political aspect of disco elysium is absolutely one of the best things about it. how many other games are there that have the courage to discuss political ideas explicitly without compressing everything into a bland mush that couldn't possibly offend anyone? Cybernetic Vermin's point is also really true - rather than a fantasy about being communist, it's more about mourning the collapse of the real-world socialist project and how we're supposed to proceed after it's happened.

i think it absolutely holds up even discarding that, though. the writing is so constantly beautiful and funny and moving and surprising. it's a role-playing game that actually lets you do a bit of role-playing beyond what way you kill guys or which faction you join.
