I will reevaluate buying some VinSyn stuff when I can buy Dead Heat on its own. I like the releases I have from them but I don’t really need a bunch of physical copies of weird porn and Z-Grade horror.

Yeah even as a big fan of that kind of stuff the subscription is a little risky, since I only collect things I want to watch it just makes more sense to buy what I want during the mid year and Black Friday sales

The weird porn is no longer included in the sub, but they give you a discount code on them.

I'm in the same boat as you. I subscribed for the half-way and do not regret it, but there are still quite a few films I haven't watched yet, and likely never will. I might do the same next year, buying what interests me before the mid-way sale (Homegrown Horrors part 2, Chiller, Dead Heat).

Arrow has been my recent addiction with their sale and the Barnes and Nobel.

You think you can take me at Satan's Hollow? Go 'head on!
If you buy all your VinSyn or Severin blus on sale, you can resell them later for basically what you paid for them and they'll sell. Chances are they might also go out of print and be worth even more than what you paid.

I mean, I'm not going to buy one of their subs because I can't really afford to spend that kind of money all at once that often (even in four Paypal payments), but it's not a total waste of money since you can get money back for sealed copies of whatever you don't want.

I'm locked in for another year :getin:

I'll be honest, I really do wish VinSyn offered a first half of the year option, because $850 is a major chunk of change.

I would probably buy a subscription package to just the weird porn if they decided to offer such a thing.

edit: Speaking of weird porn, anyone have the first VinSyn “Smut Without Smut” release (Things to Come / The Dirty Dolls) and can tell me if it’s worth getting? It was a very limited release and rarely gets below $60 on eBay.

Going back a bit, but pretty sure Dolemite was my first VS, off the top my head Santa Sangre is the only Severin I own...

Anyway ended up adding Alley Cat to my Flesh For Frankenstein preorder :sickos:

Also ordered Psychomania from Arrow, just love those skull and crossbone helmets.

I probably wouldn't pay $60 for it TBH, but it's a nice oddity to have around.

I haven't gotten around to watching The Dirty Dolls, but Things to Come was a passable low budget 70's sci-fi movie. I didn't watch it "without smut" but those sequences would be easily excised because it was like someone watching S&M on TV.

$72 for the Harry Potter set is also probably the lowest you'll see that one, although from what I've read those UHDs are nice but not major upgrades. Also Back to the Future set for $29.99(I feel like that's a lesser discount though because I think I've seen it for like $40 before).

The Jurassic World 5 movie collection UHD set is $29.99 on Amazon, so I ordered it even though I only really want the first movie. I don't think they sell the movies separately.

The Lost World is actually the standout on that set, but yea I don't think they sell it individually. Not that Jurassic Park looks bad but The Lost World looks way way better than it's ever looked in previous releases.

The MIB set is like that for me and those fuckers know it. The only one worth owning is the first, and they won’t sell it solo. I’m gonna have to wait like 2 years for stand-alone Indy releases probably.

Also… still waiting on Lawrence.

At least for Indy there's only one embarrassing movie.

Oh neat! I was just going to watch the first one/put the first one in my binder and leave the rest in the case on my shelf, but I'll have to watch The Lost World too.

I doubt Indy solo releases will ever happen, just like they won’t unpack Jurassic Park. Those Star Trek movies probably won’t see individual releases either (except for the revamped Director’s Cut of The Motion Picture, which will be a Paramount+ exclusive for a while next year). These bundles have got to be the worst aspect of UHDs.

It seems unpredictable. Like, the Rambo series got individual releases. I definitely wouldn't have expected the Hitchcock set to get individual releases so soon, but they did. Just recently Mad Max, same thing and the individual release was the same day as the full set.

That extra thick cardboard with like a matte finish to it is really great and I hope Scream Factory makes that a thing for all of their 4k releases. They did it for the Halloween series UHDs and it just feels a lot nicer than a standard slipcase.

Yeah I have to admit I never cared much about slips one way or another before getting in to the VS/AGFA ones. I have some Severin slips and they look nice (I really like the one for Blood on Satan’s Claw) but they’re not as nice texturally and are a little too snug. on the other hand my wife caught me running my fingers along the Boardinghouse slip the other night and honestly would have preferred her to walk in on me cheating.

I watched the extended (original?) cut of Psycho out of the classics collection last night. Absolutely stunning, it was the first B&W movie I’ve watched in 4k and I couldn’t believe the level of detail. The shot where they slowly twist and pan out from Marion’s eye immediately following the slashing had everyone in the room commenting on how beautiful it looked. Can’t wait to watch Vertigo, it’ll be my first time seeing it since DVD.

The best B&W 4k UHD I've seen is still It's A Wonderful Life, which might still be super affordable until it gets closer to Christmas. I was always a little hard on the movie, and the new 4k UHD has made it an annual favorite.

Well, that and my growing appreciation for Capra.

It's a Wonderful Life has a beautiful 4k disc. It's stunning how great some B&W films look on UHD. I know it's a sappy movie, but it gets me every time I watch. "A toast to my big brother George - the richest man in town", I hear that line and I'm instantly teary.

It's counterintuitive I guess because you'd think that B&W films wouldn't benefit nearly as much from HDR. But B&W films obviously have many different gradations of those colors that HDR can handle with a lot more accuracy and it gives the film a lot more texture because the contrast between the blacks/whites and the various grays is improved so much.

I got my MVD Black Friday order but in the holiday rush they grabbed some movie called Abominable instead of Nemesis. Looking up the reviews it seems better than I expected for a 2006 bigfoot movie with Lance Henriksen on the back cover, but yeah.

Edit: looks like they don’t want it back so bonus. Something something “don’t look a gift Sasquatch in the mouth”

I took years to get around to seeing it, partially because I had this idea that was really sappy and sentimental, but I found it to be so much more than what I expected. It’s pretty clear-eyed and honest about what makes life bad and how people can respond, and it presents the then-recent history of the depression with far more honesty than I was expecting. It’s well worth watching no matter who you are or how you feel about sentimentality.

And it’s worth seeing to learn how terrific young Jimmy Stewart was, if you only know him from Vertigo and Rear Window. He’s great in it.
