i think that's "fast startup" at work - basically at some point microsoft decided to make "shut down" actually be "hibernate" (or some variant of hibernate) by default

you can turn it off but it's buried in the settings somewhere

i power my laptop off completely every night and when traveling, including between home and work, because it (and my home desktop and work desktop) is configured to take btrfs snapshots of every subvolume on every boot, which i sync to my home server whenever i remember to do that

its like a 'git commit' or at least 'git add -A' for my whole machine, its pretty rare for me to "oops i shouldnt have deleted that" but frequent snapshots are nice either way

(yes i can also set up automatic snapshots while machines are running, but i like snapshots being taken by a script in the initrd and knowing that nothing is half-written by some program when the snapshot is taken, or with lock files sitting around or anything like that)

my work computer is never on when I'm off shift

I guess I can probably start turning off my main desktop when I'm not using it. literally takes under a minute to be fully booted with startup programs, and my NAS just runs 24x7 now
