Bunch more poo poo surrounding ABK tonight, fired a bunch of QA even after Warzone made almost $2 BILLION last year:

And there's an ABK president on the board of The Game Awards, so the Doritos Pope has outed himself as a bootlicker:

Turns out Geoff can find the time to whine about Konami stopping Kojima from accepting an award, but draws the line at sexual harassment, abuse, and discrimination.

The awkward thing is that Geoff Keighley was an actual good journalist when he wanted to be, he did this amazing expose on Daikatana for Gamespot back in the day. And now he’s let himself become THE DORITO POPE.

Geoff Keighley was really getting a lot of mileage out of the good will garnered from The Game Awards 2015 where he stood up for Kojima while condemning Konami.

I feel like people should have realized the situation that happened then only ever happened because everything fell into place that allowed it so, with Konami seemingly being done with normal commercial video gaming ventures back then.

It always seemed a little more pathetic than that, given how kojima never replied to his tweets. :v:

Regardless, I don't think the game awards have ever been a bastion of journalistic integrity or anything even if geoff keighley was apparently better in the past. Don't they always just give awards so AAA devs can pat themselves on the back or whatever?

I was at Blizzard CS through the BIG layoff. I was on my weekend the day it happened, so my meeting was scheduled for 2 days later. The rest of my team and I had to spend the weekend freaking out. In the end, I stayed, my best friend got dropped, my gf at the time also got dropped.

Even given that context, I still don’t get this angle. The whole “they made a bunch of money, so they’ll stop trying to optimize their workforce”. A big corp will always get rid of as many employees as they can while maintaining what they consider to be acceptable performance. Blizzactivision could have made a trillion in profit last quarter and nobody should be surprised if they do layoffs.

It’s hosed, but it’s how 99.99999% of public companies would operate, so the focus on it in situations like this always feels so manufactured to me. “In truly SHOCKING NEWS, public company in a capitalist economy acts like a public company in a capitalist economy.”

cops do not perform labor as their behavior is not constructive or beneficial and as such they are exempt from the promotion of labor organization

Yeah it's hosed up and deeply sad that Raven's fate in the CoD mines is thus, but part of spending as little money as they think they can involves hiring as few people as possible and firing them when there's more than they think they need. Labor Organization is the only real way around this, because actions like this are just what companies are gonna do. As part of a systemic critique, it's important. But since we live in the Twitter Age we don't get systemic critiques in the reactions to this.

i mean it's not that surprising, Geoff continued to be friends with and platform "the nazi experimentation on Jewish bodies was a silver lining to the holocaust" Boogie up until his gun arrest

like, as in, having "Anita Sarkeesian is responsible for the Charlottesville murder" Boogie on his E3 show and poo poo

and he ran promo for COD Vanguard at Gamescom while the stuff about ActiBlizzard was already coming out

Worse than that, nobody gives a poo poo about the awards on any level. They're just a framework that they can layer a ton of ads/reveals/exclusive codes/etc. on top of. It serves the same purpose that E3 did in the past but much cheaper, more condensed, and more ability to control the narrative since it is all delivered in a scripted format. And it's very profitable. A bunch of service game workers will be working the night of the game awards because the promotions produce a big surge of traffic that needs active attention to manage & respond to.

A curious little mouse!
How relevant are the actual "game awards" anyway? Unlike with the Oscars, there's virtually no prestige in winning one, so it doesn't seem like good advertising. Wouldn't it be easier to run another event similar to E3 instead of trying to imitate the movie industry?

Winning a VGA can really help to raise the profile of a lesser-known game (i.e. Disco Elysium winning the Subway Eat Fresh® Game of the Year in 2019) but there's no prestige, not really, it's just an advertising event for the big publishers. Video games have their own internal industry honors (TIGA, DICE) and the BAFTAs, which are you know an actual BAFTA.

Not Blizzard so much as Activision itself. Like say, if Toys for Bob or Vicarious Visions weren't currently being used as support studios they might have gotten to do a new Spyro or finish a spin-off for Crash they were actually developing that was supposed to release in the past year after Crash 4.

(Activision is even in the little Game Awards 2021 trailer Geoff edited and still has pinned to the top of his twitter through Crash)
