The kind of show that will probably not be getting picked up for national broadcast. Either of local interest only, or of... questionable quality, but sometimes strangely charming. Of course, YouTube has kind of supplanted this stuff as a creative outlet, but it's still out there. Post about memorable ones you've seen and clips if you can find em!! This lady is one of my favorites. She does a cooking show, Everyday Manna out of southern Virginia and has a massive library of episodes on YouTube. This video is a good one, it's just her making a bunch of sandwiches for the crew. I've timestamped to skip an annoying child and show you the photo of her film crew below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnWgU79O7ck&t=426s At 16:22 she makes someone a very special sandwich. Peanut butter, mayonnaise, dill pickles, and tomato (which she actually salts!) She is also Extremely Religious. Everyday Manna is on the "Living Faith Television" but I first found it on either PBS or some local channel I can't remember. The opening of this video starts with Psalms lol. This one is Meatloaf Muffins. Multiple cans of soup get half used on sides in this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sa_EGWOVA4

I only remember the porn local access shows that were on when I was a teenager. I don't really remember anything about them other than there was nudity.

The whole idea of public access TV seems so strange to me. So anyone can just buy a slot and broadcast in a city/local area? And this is still a thing post-Youtube? And people watch these?

In Albuquerque, Don Schrader used to have his own public access show. Don is a local anti-war activist, nudist, and advocate of drinking your own piss. I can't find any of those old episodes, but he has a YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tqv7g_AIlJY

Speaking of which, here's the infamous Great Satan at Large video that was so offensive it was outright banned from public access: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emZWAMA6hkA The guy probably missed the window to bring it back as a Youtube video series since that would piss off Youtube's sponsors now.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jwFA7OvxuGM&t=2493s During a family holiday visit back home forever ago we stumbled across Telepathic TV on the local access channel. In the episode we came across they were teaching people to bend spoons, which was not working out for them, but there was a really weird guy with a nasally voice leading everyone in a mantra as they tried to bend the spoons. I was unable to find that particular episode, and the archive does not appear to go back that far on their website, and it looks like all the shows before they were uploading them the Youtube are all gone anyways. The show also featured live call-ins, which was funny then when all they were getting was people ragging on them, but it seems they got better at screening and towards the end they were mostly getting calls asking for readings. It looks like they are no longer producing shows even though the website indicates they are. I don't think they do this kind of programming on the cable access channel anymore anyways, but I no longer have cable so I really don't know. The clip above should start where a rubber duck on a fishing pole is sent in to them and they draw cards from it for some reason.

I grew up just outside of Seattle, so we had SCAN (Seattle Community Access Network) and we had some of the most notorious shows on public access: Goddess Kring - naked performance artist lady, very weird but she had fans, lots of them (probably teen boys who got to glimpse their first actual titty) Political Playhouse - leftist talk show that talked about big issues like AIDS, abuses of power, censorship, the push to legalize cannabis, etc. Also nudity and profanity were prevalent. Psychic Speaks - long runner, a live call-in psychic show, ran for 10+ years Bong Hit Championships - I think you can figure this one out Kurt Cobain Was Murdered - conspiracy theory program about what really happened to the Nirvana frontman. Lots of people I knew who watched the show believed Courtney Love pulled the trigger Mike Hunt TV - probably the most infamous program to air on SCAN. Part political, bigger part pornography reviews. One of the funniest moments of my teen years was randomly channel surfing with a buddy at like 1am and we hit the public access station, and suddenly two women getting jackhammered by two dwarves with some of the biggest dicks I'd ever seen. Then it cut to a derpy looking dude who rated it and started listing the problems he had with the sex. It was way funnier than it had any right to be. I miss Seattle Public Access sometimes, it was truly the wild west in the 2000s bucksmash fucked around with this message at 08:49 on Dec 5, 2021 |

Pittsburgh has/had the It's Alive! show on saturday nights. They'd show some terrible old movie a la MST3k and have local bands on. Or sometimes cooking segments. At one point they did zombie walks in the city or would show up to stuff in character and film interactions with people for filler material. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2dhypuG3B8

There's a TON of horror host shows that air on public access tv. A lot of them have websites now and post episodes so you watch them online. They're almost all loving awful but I give them credit for doing it.

I had a Public Access Television show in 1991. Richmond Virginia while I was in college. It lasted for a year or two. Oh, and lots of prank callers. It was the wild west back then, you could say whatever you wanted on TV, no delay and no repercussion. It was the greatest time of my life for obvious reasons. Before you had a link to everyone you meet. It's weird to watch those old videos and not know anyone from then today. Eh, it's been 30 years. Philadelpha had a great public access channel that featured the Black Israelites leafing through art books they took from the library and pointing out the different ways you could tell that, say, a painting of George Washington or Eisenhower was altered or "white washed" by the white devil government to remove their blackness. Oh, did you not know that a central tenet of their philosophy is that all of history's greatest people were African and it's only after the abominations known as Europeans seized control that the true history of the world was covered up to keep people of African descent in ignorance. After 9/11, they closed by calling for the destruction of the United States of America.
