Looks like Rush won't be sticking around permanently, BF twitter confirms it's going away in a week. This is probably the dumbest possible course of action they could take - re-introduce a well-loved game mode that actually makes the new maps tolerable and with much smoother performance, let people play it for a few weeks and really start to enjoy it, then just rip it out of the game and never talk about it again. The negative backlash over it is going to be massive, and incredibly easy to avoid. The pessimist in me believes that they only want to rotate game modes in and out because the population is dying so fast that they fear heavy dilution of players across too many modes, or something equally moronic.

Looking forward to being able to disable cross play immediately tomorrow.

rush should be a main game mode with a giant button right next to conquest/breakthrough and they need to fix some of the glaring issues like no pre-game where people are already starting the objectives before like half the lobby loads in lol

Publishers are going to try to squeeze every drop of revenue they can from an IP, regardless of a developer's vision. The world of self-hosting Enemy Territory servers and either getting donations (which...never were exploited) or paying oneself has been effectively dead for a a long time now. IMO Battlefield doesn't work too well as a live service type game. The matches are long, the scale is too big, the general gameplay is too casual (in the sweatlords typically get mocked sense).

With the time it takes to make games 2-5 years could still mean this is the first project of this size and scope a lot of people worked on. Even if you're technically "up to speed" on your role, it can still make a big difference if this is your first time vs gone through the cycle a few times. There was a huge loss of institutional knowledge. Add on top of that working from home so less access to mentoring and equipment, a big change in direction, and ridiculous deadlines. They definitely should have delayed.

I hate expansion packs. Last couple times i tried playing BF1 a few months ago I could not find any servers with good pings running only the base game maps, so I just uninstalled. Splitting the player base is bad. Cosmetics seem way better when done right.

Doesn't BF1 do some kind of rotating free DLC system? I know I never purchased ANY BF1 dlc but yet sometimes I can play DLC maps in operations, and other days its different dlc operations.

I mean the problem is

You go back to expansions and either the expansions fail to sell or you repeatedly divide the gameplay population and you get where you can't find a decently full match of the expansion a few months past launch. Finding a full Euro Forces/Special Forces/Armored fury server was a nightmare a month or two post launch and people defaulted back to just playing 24/7 Karkand/Gulf/Dragon Valley. I didn't play the BF3 expansions besides Return to Karkand so I can't comment on that, but others have similar in this thread.

or

You go live service, incentivizing developers to play this weird insane balancing act of putting enough poo poo in with the base game that it's good enough to develop a player base and we need to update it to keep up the player numbers, but we also need a lot of worthwhile vehicles for monetization so whales can keep the gravy train rolling. You can basically see this in 2042 with the tarkov mode and the specialist system neither of which add much to the base game besides a place to put loot boxes[eventually] or new fancy skins or more cynically new specialists you buy.

In Canada and this was maybe 2 months ago last time I tried. It was a month or so before 2042 release. Got tired of cheaters in BF5 so installed BF1, went through the beginning into (awesome, immersive, but annoying when it's the third time you've seen it and just want to set up key binds!), and could not find any servers with good pings to play. Uninstalled 10 minutes later.

sure, but dice has always had a lot of turnover and I would be exceedingly surprised if their past games were all made by long-time employees. It's certainly possible that newer employees combined with the struggles of wfh during covid slowed down the dev pipeline (which it almost certainly did), but I think the suggestion that there is some intangible spirit of battlefield gameplay that only 5+ year employees can properly implement is just ridiculous. Similarly the suggestions that like 40% of the devs don't play FPS just seems equally irrelevant to the final product compared to, again, the huge issues with how rushed the development clearly was and how obtuse frostbite is to work with and the dice/ea corporate structure

the issues with bf2042 seem almost entirely like stuff that comes from a rushed development timeline so yeah I agree 100% that it should've been delayed. There are enough flashes of stuff done very well that imo if they released this with another year of polish they'd have had a barn burner of a game

I'm not totally disagreeing with you or saying having more veteran staff would have solved all issues. Maybe it was the people who have been around longer and that are now in higher positions are the ones that hosed up on some of the direction of the game, tone mismatch etc. I just wanted to point out that 6 months in or 2 years in may not matter as much if this is still your first project and the real lessons come from after you get one shipped. A lot of this comes down to bad project management and unrealistic timelines.

I'm stoked for the patch tomorrow. It will be nice if the sound tweaks make a substantial improvement. Did not manage to get my Tier 1 prox grenade badge in time but oh well. No mention in the patch notes of the weekly challenges or 64 player conquest mode coming tomorrow so hopefully that's still happening.

thats really strange. I was playin BF1 right before launch too, but in the US, and there were definitely a few populated community servers running just the base maps. I was kinda annoyed cause I wanted more DLC servers

one weird quirk of the server browser is that the more options you select, the more it shows. So instead of not selecting any map or player count for the filter, select all the maps and every player count besides the lowest one to get it to populate more servers

There's a few community run "all" map servers but the tend to have 7 person queues or more that I don't care to wait through

yeah same, i'm ranting at some of the popular speculative youtube vids, not really anything I've seen anyone here saying. Also the tom henderson video seemed pretty good and was, from what I saw of it, pretty grounded in concrete info on the games' development

also gonna add that the higherups at dice have had an extremely bad reputation for I think the better part of a decade now and are, as far as I have heard, the main reason why they struggle so much to retain talent and experience. afaik the main polarizing dice execs are almost all still there.

No idea. Steam is doing nothing even after restart and it's quite obtuse. Also no idea if it did anything when I wasn't looking. It lets me launch the game multiple times without trying to update it. Validating game files also nothing. Trying to host a portal game ends up in "Server not found"

Weird.

So they removed BF3 and 1942 Conquest and BC2 Rush modes from Portal and now just added "Conquest/Rush of ages" which randomly places you in a map and equivalent game so you don't get to choose what you play anymore.

I just... I don't know what they're thinking that they're doing but it's really dumb. I guess they're consolidating it all to a single matchmake button so that matches have a chance to be more populated but you better like what you get or gently caress off I guess.

Well that's annoying. I can understand not wanting 20 different spotlighted modes on the front but there should at least be a list of official portal modes on a tab somewhere. Any sign of 64 player 2042 anywhere? That was rumored to be showing up too.
