Even before covid I would avoid the party type events because people are disgusting. I don't know how you manage everyone grabbing at food now. I see people still grabbing the samples at costco like there isn't a pandemic going on.

the way I understand it people touching stuff is not a significant transmission vector it's mostly just being near other folks who are breathing [which most people do]

i hate costco samples because costco shopping carts are huge and any time there's "Good samples" they block the entire aisle from shopping

i've seen people block aisles with their carts when the sample person said it'd be like 15 minutes

who on earth has 15 minutes to blow while inconveniencing others for 1 bite of a firsh stick or w/e

i swear to god its the trashiest thing and i feel embarrassed by proxy to witness it

We have no universal healthcare, no nationalizing the banks for causing crashes, no execution of Chris Matthews in central park so you may as well wait for as many free samples at costco as you want. It's basically your birthright as an American.

the consumer profile for costco members/shoppers tilts way towards the top of the income ladder (there was an internal saying there: "millionaires shop at costco") and i swear the median car in a costco parking lot in a lexus suv or something similar, so watching those kinds of people stand around for ten minutes to get thirteen cents of free food is always good entertainment

Ask Me About the time i put up some specific, hard to find furnace filters on nextdoor for free ONLY for if they'd fit your furnace, and got a dozen inquiries within hours from people who couldn't possibly use them until the first request that actually had a furnace that fit them.

Just jaw dropping. It's like that hoarders show on TV or something. No intent or even capability to use them, just trying to be first. Me first me first me first!

the same thing happened at the Very Fancy university i went to when snapple became big and they set up a tent in front of the student center and handed out free samples. people whose parent bought them brand new bmws for graduation presents stood in the cold for twenty minutes in order to score a mini-dixie cup with an inch of watery iced tea in it. it was the damnedest thing

yeah same. like i'll obviously grab one as i'm going by cause why not, but it always really confused me that people will push and wait and clog things up to taste whatever frozen put-it-in-the-oven thing they're hawking

I think the part of their brain that usually tells them "people are seeing and judging you" turns straight the gently caress off when they get into costco

one time i saw a lady bite the food off of the stick that another lady was holding. at first i thought they were together but...they weren't. i'm like 80% sure it was a straight up snatch as opposed to "ah she is handing me a sample and i will bite it instead"

fuckin weird. i started laughing and she glared at me 🤷‍♀️

fun fact, though: airplanes are nowhere near as sealed as people think. the pressurization in the cabin is maintained by a constant bleed from the engine compressor stages, balanced by a dinner-plate-sized valve somewhere in the tail that is open to the outside. cabin altitude is set by adjusting the valve to dump more or less air. as a consequence, the entire cabin atmosphere is changed for fresh air every 5-10 minutes.

the airport is where all the covid is hiding.

haha that reminds me of when our office did that with prometheus. our team decided to go early for lunch then play pool for a bit before the screening. so we're in the billiards lounge playing and there's a girl in a full cocktail dress at the bar at like, 1:15 on a thursday. she came over and paid attention to us anddi polled my teammates after and 5 of 7 didn't realize she was an escort looking for business lol.

septa has been pretty adamant about this too, pointing out that you may notice that they constantly are opening the doors on the buses trolleys and trains which lets in fresh air

I’ve got a bit about how a handle of vodka for $10 at a liquor store is hobo grade night train but buying a Kirkland signature handle is acceptably upper middle class

thousands of marketing dissertations have been written on how having a three hundred dollar deli tray or waygu prime beef transforms perceptions of what is a slightly nicer sams club

costco is a better store because they pay their employees a living wage and use unionized transportation labor

"nicer sam's club" is really underselling them imho

they also don't do that walmart "we need our special cut-rate version of your jeans to sell" crap

yes, but the lexus december to remember folks aren’t there for the better labor policy (the benefits of the better labor policy, sure)

90% of what people buy there is the same stuff as sams, but a moderately better version; like 100 load bottle of tide vs 85 load; vs something like whole foods or tjs

strongly dislike how everything is way overpackaged tho do i really need this bread loaf wrapped three times in plastic

the quality is irrelevant, when you’re buying a half gallon of vodka for that little money you either do a lot of entertaining or have a problem, unless you’re in costco because its a smart buy; “same distillery as ketel one” etc etc
