Just this year. Granato has that team looking like they may actually know how to play hockey. They're not really the best at it, but they're not skating around without purpose.

Playoffs are no big deal,
don't have a crap attack.
Are offensive defensemen the most underrated players in the league? It feels like everyone shits all over them even if they are pulling in 70+ point seasons.

Maybe among fancystats enthusiasts? I feel like casuals are more likely to associate points with greatness. If you watch games closely though, the defensive blunders are more viscerally hurtful.

e: While I think Carlson would be a perfectly fine ceiling for Dahlin, I don't really consider him a big superstar. He's a big PP producer, but it would be pretty shocking if he won the Norris. I was not mad at all that he got beat by Josi.

Defensemen that score more points are possessing the puck more often than their peers. Possessing the puck is arguably the best form of defense because the other team isn't on offense if you have the puck. It does make their mistakes more noticeable though.

I love me a puck handling defenseman, but playing defense is also a pretty big part of the "defenseman" job and guys like Carlson are really just forwards playing at the defenseman position. Which is by no means always necessarily a bad thing but IMO guys of that type tend to be somewhat overrated if anything, because the goals they generate are more obvious to see than the goals their adventurous play in their own end help create for the opposition.

Although devil's advocate against my own position here, a really good offensive d-man is really critical to a good PP unit (RIP :gonchar:)

I think players like Dmitry Orlov are probably more underrated. He plays big even strength minutes and generally is fantastic in them. But he doesn’t put up huge point totals because most of his good work is done in the defensive and neutral zones, and he doesn’t play many PP minutes because Carlson is in front of him.

It was either JFresh or Dom who kind of had a hot take and said that Orlov was the best Caps defenseman and in the top 30 in the league and honestly I didn’t disagree with their analysis.

Ovie’s gonna have like 100 more ENGs before his career ends. And it’s gonna kick rear end.

It's about finding that next group of core players we can win with in the next 6, 8, 10 years. Let's face it, it's hard for 20-, 21-, 22-year-olds to lead an NHL team. Look at the playoffs.

The Dallas Stars are complete rear end and I sincerely hope history remembers the past decade for the team putting together a fun but flawed offensive team, only to realize they'd be better served going older and slower and shittier with contracts they couldn't move, drunkenly stumbling into a SCF by accident and returning to a dumpster.

I don't know how I'm this negative about a team two years removed from a Cinderella playoff run, but jesus christ this team is absolutely garbage. I was more optimistic about the team's future when they were bankrupt and without an owner.

this is a pretty scary look at how carolina at calgary with calgary being omicron covid carriers caused a bunch of outbreaks across the league: https://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/2021/12/17/timeline-how-nhl-outbreaks-connect-to-one-game-in-calgary.html

media's got to do the contact tracing, NHL won't tell us themselves

e: it looks like the other big outbreak is someone on colorado getting omicron before the 12th, then sharing it with florida on the 12th and then to nashville on the 16th.

Rumor is there's talks about pausing the season for a couple weeks but some teams are pushing back because there's high profit games coming up soon.

So that's cool.

Myers also put on COVID protocol now. You have to think there's a fair chance of it being cancelled. Plus our defense right now is, OEL - Juulsen, Hughes - Ashton Sautner (I think? They signed him and called him up today), Bowey - Burroughs and I'm really not sure if that's good or not.

The Canucks had to sign a guy today (Ashton Sautner) just so they can ice a full d-corps.

Injured/COVID'ed defensemen: Myers, Poolman, Schenn, Hunt, Brisebois, Keeper, Rathbone

The D tonight (if the game actually goes ahead) will be something like:

Hughes-Burroughs
OEL-Juulsen
Sautner-Bowey

They're down to like their 14th string guy on the depth chart.

Basically what I'm saying is that the Canucks are still gonna beat the Leafs tonight because the Leafs only lose games with these types of narratives.
