Sylphosaurus posted:Had it been the sequel I may have been tempted to get it but the first Dark alliance game was so barebones that I´d just recommend getting one of the other myriad of great Diablo clones on PC instead. I got it for the nostalgia on XB1 a few months ago and had horrible slowdowns in the early sewer level that made things unplayable. Haven’t tried it again yet to see if that’s been fixed. Barebones is accurate, but I did love it back in the day.

ARPGs are a genre that has been rapidly developed and honed since Diablo 2. Path of Exile, Grim Dawn, The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing. I wouldn't revisit the old games of the genre unless it's just a nostalgia thing. Dark Alliance was cool for its time, but it has been superseded in every possible way.

I will also say that Minecraft Dungeons is a great way to get into the genre without the blizzard supporting aspect (Diablo 3), or the rather insane system depth (Path of Exile). It's also on gamepass, cross platform (PC/switch/Xbox can all play together online), and also has 4 player couch co-op. Also has regular big DLCs every few months- definitely not the same as it was at launch.

I think there's SOME parts of the old ARPGs that are totally missing from the new wave that are actually good. Like having a reason to know what enemies do, for example, instead of just what modifiers they have on them. But DA looks and feels old. It looks old in a good way, it feels comfortable because of how many PS2 games looked like it. But it feels old in a bad way.

It reminds me more of Terraria than gungeon or nuclear throne, with how weapon upgrades tend to have drastically different play styles that force you to move and attack differently. the bosses are well designed too, although i've reached a point where all the ones available to me now on hard mode are kicking my rear end effortlessly. I recommend it!

Yeah Archvale was a ton of fun. I suck at bullet hell games and played on easy and it was very manageable even for me. By the end I think I could probably have managed to play on normal, because I almost never even touched my potions. It has a Hollow Knight badge mechanic that's fun to play around with and try different builds whenever you get a new weapon. At ~7 hours it also didn't overstay its welcome.

It’s not a bash on it being easy it makes it very chill! Too often with 3d platformers they make them way too hard at a couple spots and I find that annoying and frustrating. This one you can just walk around and suck gunk up I did get a little stuck at one point where it was really not too obvious where to go but even that wasn’t a big obstacle.

It's also not open-world with ton of useless collectibles which I appreciate a lot. The Gunk is... fine. There's nothing new or groundbreaking in terms of gameplay or plot. The visuals are quite pretty. The puzzles are serviceable. Sucking up gunk and the occasional alien creature is kind of fun the first few times you do it, but then it mostly feels like you're repeating the same steps over and over. What you do in the first ten minutes is essentially what you're doing at the end, even with the minor power-ups you get along the way. There is not a challenging moment in the game. The problem with "fine" is that this was made by the designers of the Steamworld series, who have created some of my all-time favorite games. All of the Steamworld games have been special in their own way, usually taking a tired genre and perfecting it, and injecting loads of style and small but important innovations. The Gunk is a perfectly pleasant way to spend 6-8 hours, and it's on Game Pass, so "free" for many of us. But nothing about it is special, and from WhiteHowler fucked around with this message at 21:45 on Dec 21, 2021 |

Lacuna is a sci-fi cop game where you have a static narrative framework but some decent leeway to mess around as you see fit within it and get 8 different outcomes. Whats quite neat about it is the sheet system which are effectively measurements of how well you've internalized the case and general information you're given and makes reading the various news articles and notes thoroughly. As far as puzzles go they're very natural and feel fun to solve, nothing really complex just collating the clues you get and putting them together into a narrative, and the game progresses whether or not you're right so never sweat it out. All in all a fun time.

I know there were definitely folks who would prefer it there vs. EGS, so wanted to ping the thread. Also, we added a hands-free zen mode and Yuledogs mode so you can kinda use it as a festive holiday background lol. https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/256860224/movie480_vp9.webm?t=1636748750 quote:The Red Lantern is a narrative, dog-sledding game about survival.

Red Lantern is good, Ashly Burch voices the main character and you can turn off dog death. It was a bit buggy when I first played it but that was a while ago so it's probably fixed by now.

If you played at release, a lot of stuff has been fixed since then and hopefully you wouldn't see (those) bugs anymore. The biggest addition in the update is the ability to adopt all of the dogs and switch between them leading the runs so that you can complete all the dog stories on a single save, which helps a lot with replay value/desire imo.

Bought siralim ultimate the other day, it's great for chilling out with my lovely laptop and a gamepad. Pokémon but with 1200 monsters, just explore absurd combinations of abilities all day. As I get older I'm much more into low-fi games that can be played in my own head, like dominions. I remember loving battle brothers until the desert expansion- the cannon effects were too much for my machine, making the game unplayable .

This is an older game, still in early access, built for touch pad, works on pc, and made by a chinese company. But I just found it during the sale. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1116880/The_Heroic_Legend_of_Eagarlnia/ It is basically a game where you smash end turn after managing your empire with some simple real time battles. I have put a few hours into it so far and really do enjoy it. The UI is 96% functional in english with only one button I've seen so far having word wrap issues. Also direct translations own since when you build up prosperity they say 'lets build a welfare state!'

So not a new release, but Unsighted just released its 1.1 patch. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AXhK7Bxd40 It went from unplayable to an amazing recommendation. The main problem before was that a lot of the puzzle solving/traversal stuff counted as weapons, which meant that you constantly had to go into the menu to change equipment. Thankfully they've added equipment loadouts which can be switched on the fly. It's a genuinely great Metroidvania that seems to have been overlooked.

I wouldn't call it "unplayable", but it certainly was annoying and the weapon sets are a welcome addition to a fantastic game. My main remaining gripe is that your fairy companion continues the grand tradition of Issun and Fi and loving loves to spoil puzzle solutions as soon as you enter a room and otherwise point out the glaringly obvious.

Erik Hermansen, the dude who created DROD, just put out a new puzzle game. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1449570/The_Godkiller__Chapter_1/ I only recently got into the DROD series and this looks a good deal more involved and intense than those games, which were already incredibly difficult. Looks like a good time if your idea of a good time is a puzzle game that leaves you broken and crying in the shower.

needing to occasionally change weapons in the menu for puzzle solving/traversal hardly made unsighted anything close to unplayable, it was just a minor inconvenience, just like having to equip different items in zelda games, but not even as bad as some of those could be about it. this is a very welcome improvement though. anyway it's one of the very best games of last year, if you are fond of zelda/hyper light drifter/metroidvania-style exploration it's absolutely a must play.

Fatty posted:So not a new release, but Unsighted just released its 1.1 patch. I’d hardly call that the major problem. I liked the game well-enough but the demo game a wrong impression so I was surprised how faux-linear the full game ended up being while forcing you to go the long way several times. Sometimes you also had to walk extra when failing puzzles, and this combined with the above just made me think the devs like to waste my time. I liked the combat, the graphics, the music, though.

it's designed to be fairly linear on your first playthrough but completely open on subsequent playthroughs once you know what you're doing, which is a more explicit version of the sort of sequence breaks there are in super metroid etc. if you find the time pressure frustrating though you can just turn it off. i didn't need to though, but i didn't find the game to be overly challenging so i had enough time for what mattered - if you're worse at it than i was i can understand if it's really annoying. i still died a fair bit but not to the point that it was ever frustrating. i didn't really find the puzzles to be time-wasting either idk but i didn't really get bothered by the time limit - if you were really focused on it then i can understand how any friction at all to going fast would be annoying.
