Sniep posted:at low refresh rates, like 60 or less, you can see it flickering as the whole screen gets bright and dark each scan In the nineties I was given a new monitor. After a few minutes of use it made my eyes hurt and made me feel unpleasant. For the longest time I couldn't figure out what the gently caress was 'wrong' with it. Is it too bright??!! (Adjusts brightness way down). No.. that's not it... Is it the color tint?? (Adjusts) No.... Wait.. Why does my hand have tracers when I wave it front of the monitor??? Oh my god why does the MONITOR have tracers when I move my head from side to side??? Then I learned about low refresh rate. Sadly, a lot of LED light

i had a similar experience the first time i played a modern console fps on a computer. probably like call of duty 4 or something? it literally made me sick and dizzy after just minutes of playing, and i couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. did i just get too old for video games? then i learned about field of view. i don't remember the game, but i do distinctly recall that its default fov, according to some forums, was 65 degrees. lmao

Jim Silly-Balls posted:good DLP projectors are very good, and it’s still basically the defacto standard since laser projectors are expensive as heck yet my experience with DLP has been in a few university auditoriums where they had big models, the kind with 400 spare bnc connectors coming out the back, professionally mounted to the ceiling. so presumably not one youd get at sears. but i still got headaches and saw rainbows whenever my eyes moved even with those probably a bit of confirmation bias since if any DLP weren't complete trash (maybe movie theater $$$$ territory is required?) then i probably wouldn't even think about it, but after all that bullshit with ostensibly high tier models why risk it later on i bought a $400 projector from sharp, specifically because they didn't use DLP in any of their models. it worked great for years until i sold it with the house it was attached to. didn't need a replacement bulb but they were common and only like $80

i was doing a bunch of military sims in the late 90s/early 00s and there was a huge push to use Commercial Off-The-Shelf software so everyone trying for grant money was writing their poo poo in quakeC and doing their Serious Warfighter Trainings in as Unreal mods and poo poo and because it was all POC stuff they'd never polish off the rough edges so you could always pull out the Impact Hammer in your Naval Purchasing Systems training or fall into lava when you're transferring control to the secondary bridge of your cargo barge or whatever

Jim Silly-Balls posted:imagine setting your resolution to anything less than the maximum possible people in university unironically believed this, so they ran their lovely 17" crt monitors at 1600x1200 and then sat with their nose smashed against the screen because not only was everything tiny, it was blurry as well since the monitor didn't actually have the dot pitch to resolve the entirety of the resolution. it maxed out at 60hz at the resolution too, so it was headache inducing
