I really liked Nightmare Alley. I'll have to check out the 40s version before it leaves Criterion Channel, but this was really strong.

It kind of has a 1988 Blob vibe but with Abel Ferrara's sleaze all over it. It also has a fun performance from R. Lee Ermey.

For my first film of 2022, I watched Dont look up, but we have discussed that. For my second film I just finished watching Tarkovsky’s Mirror since I purchased it last year. It was beautiful, but I am not really sure what I just watched.

I never actually sat through an episode of it but my mom use to watch it. My wife loved that show, so I watched more than I would have liked lol It's incredibly stupid obviously but in retrospect I grudgingly respect it's commitment to the bit. It's not like most lawyer shows aren't ludicrous fantasy anyways, so why not throw soul-mates and bodily possession and angels in there? April Bowbly was the ditzy best friend, it's nice to see her get a much juicier role like Rita Farr on doom patrol. The main guy on Superstore was one of the guardian angels I think

I really enjoyed No Time to Die. It’s very well made. Top-notch production design etc, as one would expect.

I’ve only seen Casino Royale and Skyfall, and I really disliked the latter after the first act. Might watch No Time to Die one day, but I’m not especially bothered. I’d rather watch it for being a Cary Fukunaga movie than a Bond movie.

No movie hence could use any editing, Quantum used it all up.

Hey now, Connery was also very old. I seem to remember the Opera House scene in QoS being good but I haven't seen the movie since it was in theaters.

Quantum is solid if you watch it back to back with Casino as a sort of fourth act. On its own it doesn't work nearly as well.

The Craig and Brosnan Bond series are like weird mirrors. Goldeneye and Casino Royale have the same director and they are both trying to reinvent Bond for a new era, but the Brosnan films get increasingly silly and the Craig films get increasingly dour. I've fallen off getting Idris Elba for Bond, no issue with it being a PoC, or a woman, or a woman PoC, I just think Elba has aged out of the role, get someone young for the next Bond.

I tend to feel Bond should be in his mid 30s to early 40s as it befits the character more. I wouldn’t mind a one or two off movie set of Elba being Bond. I think it’s worth to have.

That's why I find the black James Bond and lady Doctor Who discussions so uninteresting. When you argue for that, you're giving up. You're admitting that these miserable franchises are inescapable. Dare to imagine a better world, a world where they stop making James Bond and Doctor Who.

A better answer is that Doctor Who and James Bond should be in the public domain and anyone should be able to make one.

All three of those franchises have had long stretches with no new content. And it's not a very good comparison because all three of those franchises are significantly better than James Bond and Doctor Who. Compare the anticipation for the next entries. Everyone is very excited for The Witch From Mercury, but everyone is resigned to the fact that there will be another James Bond and simply argues about how old or black he should be. I’m just waiting for the moment they stop loving around and make an entirely unironic WWII Bond movie where he kills hitler by kicking him into the maintenance hatch of a sabotaged V2 while the theme plays at maximum volume. You 100% know it’s a thing that’s been pitched to the broccolis at least once a decade since connery.
