On another note, having now seen and enjoyed all the reboots I was thinking of possibly giving the 80’s He-Man and She-Ra another try. Not sure if I can stomach watching the whole thing as I remember not really caring for it as a kid (also 80’s Adora’s voice is weird to me) but are there any particularly important and/or noteworthy episodes from each to focus on?

Also, is New Adventures any good?

Speaking of, I believe there’s a part in SPoP where Catra mentions that Shadow Weaver found her when she was young as well. Sort of makes me wonder where she came from originally (we never see any other cat people in the series as far as I recall).

I think we see some cats rebelling against Horde Prime.

Watching through this again I just wanted to say having the fall of Brightmoon happen offscreen is an amazing choice. There are a handful of stories I can think of that would have made a spectacle of it —princesses fighting and failing, all for nothing, with the grim purpose of having a pornographic display of violence (or to do the whole fakeout where it looks like maybe they'll prevail —then they don't). They made the choice to not go there. Instead they cut directly from the arrival of Prime to a refugee convoy, which is hopping desperately from camp to camp (dragging the leaders and their personal effects around while conspicuously not in Brightmoon). While there's reasons that make surrendering Brightmoon a sensible in-world decision on Micah's part, I'm coming at this from the part of the writers. They decided it wasn't important to make any more of a spectacle of Prime's war than is strictly necessary to give anguish to characters that actually matter.

I'd love to be able to round this off with some real point or profound statement that ties it all together, but all I have is that raw observation: they made some cool choices.

'80s He-Man isn't really a big narrative kind of show, but maybe episodes like Prince Adam's mother's origin story?

It doesn’t necessarily have to be narrative focused, just asking for some of the better episodes of the series in your opinion (same goes for the OG She-Ra)

Season 5 Episode 9, immediately after the theme tune, we get some shots of the rebellion.

- Some batlike people

- Wolves (the female one looks catlike, but their tails are definitely dog)

- Skewered surveillance bots

- The star siblings fighting horde androids

I got into this show late, what’s the “Sow” scandal?

The artists were joking around with different permutations of Bow with puns. One was Sow where Bow was depicted as a farmer but people felt it looked more like a sharecropper/slave. So twitter called them out on it. Same old story, there was a brief period of defensiveness followed by a sincere apology.

It was an honest mistake and after a brief mistep it was corrected but it speaks to blind spots of the creators. It is much better for everyone that they decided to stick to their wheelhouse and get advice where needed (like with entrapta).

What do you mean? Love heals all. Just u-haul it with your abusive partner. It'll be different this time, trust me.

It's not like Catra will be threatened by her emotional attachment to her friends and try to isolate Adora. Besides, the Horde is gone so it's not like they need to regularly see each other. It's a pity it didn't work out this week with our schedule but you can see your friends in a little while when our schedule clears up.

The schedule will never clear up.

I thought I'd try watching some old She-Ra. I went in with no expectations, given that it's 80s toy cartoon, and I kinda like how cheesy it is.

One of the most frequently visited differences between old She-Ra and new is that old She-Ra is doing the whole alter ego game. Nobody knows Adora is She-Ra and she keeps running off into the bushes to transform.

Also

Princess Glimmer.

oh and Shadow Weaver is basically painted red in terms of how her boobs are drawn.

Here's where Peekablue comes from if people want to know what the heck a peekablue is meant to be.

The secret identity thing makes even less sense for Adora than it does for Adam since both of her forms are technically at the top of Hordak’s shitlist (even if she was under mind control in the original she did still betray the Horde, not to mention the fact that she’s the leader of the rebellion and yet somehow people still trust her despite her constantly running off when things get bad). I’m glad the remake did away with that aspect entirely to be honest.

Is the OG She-Ra still worth a watch out of curiosity (Adora’s original voice kind of weirds me out going by the intro and from what I hear Swiftwind sounds even worse)?

Worth is a subjective thing. In many ways this cartoon is trash, and I wouldn't recommend it as an enjoyable viewing experience in its own right, unless you're someone who derives enjoyment from watching trash ironically. I've just decided to watch a few episodes out of curiosity for the source material, and to see the evolution.

Personally, however, I love cheese. It's no Jem and the Holograms but Catra being all cat puns is amazing.

I can't take my eyes off Shadow Weaver's boobs though. What in the actual gently caress.

Gotcha, I’ve seen all the various remakes but not much of the originals or New Adventures (I never cared for it much as a kid and was curious how well the shows hold up without the aid of nostalgia goggles).

Though to be fair, every incarnation has its share of cheese and the 2002 He-Man show basically follows the 80’s formula only with better character design/voice acting (for some at least) and a bit more story focus

I want to know if Peekablue is still dating Sweet Bee as according to Adora's prom research, and whether the Star Sisters she mentioned are the Star Siblings we later meet or if it's just a coincidence.

I really hope Kevin Smith winds up getting his wish about doing a crossover with said series one day as it’d be fun to see those versions of the characters again (and even more to see them interact with the He-Man side of the franchise)

Alternatively, just give us a full fledged sequel (there’s plenty of potential story threads left by the finale they could explore after all)

One thing to note, is that while the "scandal" was unfortunately a crummy moment, it was also done by people acting in bad faith. In the very same stream, one of the staff mentioned a name of a podcast, which happened to have the d-word for lesbians, because they wanted to honor the members of that same podcast who were in the chat at the time. Just seemed like some folks who were very online were just gunning for anything to use against Noelle and the crew.

yea the best way to describe it is that the sow moment legit stunk but then the facts got pretty muddled by a bunch of fake informations/bad faith readings of some additional tidbits on social media (i think the fake info got cleared up in the days following tho?)

e: i wouldn't say Everyone who criticized the sow stuff were also the same bad faith readers tbh, the whole thing was probably a mix of people who were legit disappointed at the one thing vs people who jsut like spreading bad faith info to feel better about themselves

Before watching the Kevin Smith series I would have thought this was a loving terrible idea.

The characters are very well designed and written. It's great to see all these awesome cartoons coming out with a variety of different positive female characters. It reminds me of Lauren Faust saying (of the pony reboot) "There are lots of different ways to be a girl."

That statement should have been obvious but, at the time, it was refreshing to see.

From what little I’ve seen of the original She-Ra I have to say that SPoP is actually better in most respects and I really want to see these characters return in some capacity (in fact, it may be one of my favorite installments in the entire MOTU franchise).

Have Noelle and/or her crew done anything else significant since then out of curiosity?

I'm not sure who was behind the Netflix Voltron series, but it seemed really similar in general "this is actually pretty good" and for-lack-of-a-better-term "tone" to SPoP.

Voltron was pretty well regarded (aside from a segment of the fandom into shipping, they went a bit off the rails) up until the end. One character died and that was a bad look because of who it was and its representation was a bit sketchy. There's still some good stuff if you like the property and I'm sure you've seen a lot worse than Voltron's failings.

So in that case is it a sequel to or a reimagining of the original Voltron/Golion? And if the latter, how accurate is it to the source material (which in the Japanese version was surprisingly dark at times)?

A reimagination of Voltron, but not Golion. Golion was on a post-apocalypse Earth attacked by aliens and there's none of that in the show, instead it's all retelling and updating the American version. (There IS a sequel to Voltron in Voltron Force but it's not great.)

The Netflix Voltron I'm talking about is this one, and Wikipedia has most of the plot points/synopsis: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltron:_Legendary_Defender

I mean, it had 8 loving seasons, which is a lot longer than most Netflix series get.
