So I'm a terribly white dude who doesn't know poo poo about rap besides appreciating Biz Markie (RIP) and seeing Snoop Dogg at a club once. I used to be one of those "I like everything but country and rap" idiots but I'm willing to learn.

Please post the good poo poo so I have a guide to understanding what I'm missing.

Yeah you didn't provide any context at all for what music you like or what you don't like about the rap you have heard. So I'm just gonna assume you don't like top 40 stuff. So my suggestion is to try listening to rap music, op

i kinda fell off sage after a while but A Healthy Distrust and Human The Death Dance were pretty decent. should probably look at 'em again tbh.

i think really you just gotta listen to a bunch of different types of rap and see which one makes you go "ooh, that's good!" then look into more of that artist's stuff, their inspirations and stuff that's similar. rap has a lot of different eras and subgenres and i hope you find one you like a lot!

i think Li(f)e was the last album i listened to from him, Little Houdini is very cinematic and i'd love to check out more rap with a live backing band. i know about The Roots, but i haven't explored them much that one incredible Black Thought freestyle everyone's probably seen on youtube. i need to, though! would love more recommendations of rap with backing bands (not rap-rock or nu-metal tho, i mined those fields dry as a teen :v: )

the thing I'd ask is "what kind of stuff do you like now, and why," because not just connections to other artists but also types or feel of music can lead to certain types of recommendations. People get and want different things out of different music, though there's a lot of big hits that just about everyone can agree Absolutely loving Knock that can also be recommended as well.

I have no idea how he's received by wider audiences, but as a fellow lame white dude, I really like Watsky, but his stuff is often very melody/singing heavy with rap interludes/verses.

A lot of what's satisfying about being a rap listener comes more and more as you listen to more rap. Rap references things all the time as an ongoing conversation, recognizing people directly, and recognizing those references on the fly comes with familiarity. That's part of what you're missing. Another part is just having enough familiarity with rap to appreciate what you will like about it. So it might not be you hear the good poo poo and it clicks, but it might be you have heard enough to recognize when someone does something really slick, because rappers love doin that

Anyways here's some poo poo I like

Birds revere you and consider you one of their own.

You are welcome in their holy places.
I've got a real answer for you. So, one of the major hurdles towards getting to liking rap music is hearing and understanding the lyrics and their meaning. When you're first getting into it, words can go by so fast and slang can be so unfamiliar that it's hard to get into.

There's a website called 'Genius' that will provide you with the lyrics for rap music along with annotations that will give you explanations and context for each song. If you have it open while listening to rap songs that you like the sound of, you can get a deeper understanding. You might have to pause and unpause as you go. If you keep doing this, eventually you'll pick up on things and not need it as much any more.

While it's entirely possible to just enjoy the flow and beat and not worry too much about the lyrics, I think this will enhance your enjoyment.
