I still have an autographed copy of Operation Desert Stormy around somewhere, when she toured adult stores and came by the one I worked in. I should dig that out and see if it's worth anything after all that poo poo with turmp.

Ive always found it weird that those who could benefit the most from an expansive social safety net can also be the ones who love the idea of no government interference. Like it makes sense in a really short sighted way that as decently paid salaried computer toucher i personally would like less taxes out pf my check because, barring something extremely dumb my job will be here tommorow and ill be able to perform it unless all my fingers get cut off. For contractors it seems really stupid because it lessens your bargaining power when the alternative to taking any lovely job with lovely terms is starve in the streets.

That assumes people will think beyond the short term as well as the individual scope. Some people are just selfish and shortsighted.

In addition to being shortsighted, a lot of people are either straight up misinformed. Remember that one of our two main political parties (and their propaganda outlets) have been pushing the idea that "poor people" are simultaneously poor due to their own failings but also that "poor people" aren't real and they're just mooching off of the government, those dirty refrigerator-havers ...and the other one of our main political parties has done largely nothing to actually expand benefits in a way visible to most people.

Uh actually I got $1800 from the government. Wait. poo poo. Most of that was Trump. Well at least I got $1200 on the way from Joe! Wait. poo poo... I saw someone who pays zero attention to politics put it nicely: "Trump stopped student loan payments and gave people $1200. Biden is restarting student loan payments and has given people $600."

This is a good summary if you do not have any understanding that the child tax credit exists, think $600 = $1400, and do not count unemployment insurance. The child tax credit is the most important of all of those, IMO. For the group of people who do not have kids and also are employed, they didn’t personally see a lot of direct stimulus.

Extended unemployment was originally under Trump, but Biden did extend it more than Trump did. The CTC has a strong possibility of backfiring because the credit was increased less than the advanced payments. Since withholding isn't trivial for a dual income household, the full child tax credit was likely the only thing preventing a lot of parents from owing taxes. The CTC advance payments are implemented in such a stupid way.

Someone could argue about the structuring of the taxes (I tend to think that the way a LOT of tax credits have existed for years is confusing to people who think they pay so much taxes, but don't realize how much they "get back" at the end of the year is really just a credit). But at the end of the day, if some dual-income households are bad at taxes, that's a small price for putting more money in the hands of parents taking care of kids during weird times like pandemic school closures, uncertain income, daycare non-availability or limited availability/waitlists, etc.
