yeah, REALYRAW is not a description of the deal workers are getting, but actually the Real Avg Hourly Earning YoY index (real meaning adjusted for inflation).

e: also i think this is way underestimating the inflation in practice faced by people, the way the indices are constructed in a way no longer reflecting workers realities well. notably i don't think the markets are nearly as insane as they look, rather a large part is them reflecting inflation much more fairly.

Biden has the best foreign policy of any president in my lifetime, of course the majority of America won't like him.

Anyways, I have a feeling this RNC move is a big handout to Fox News and OANN, who can now host their own presidential campaign events.

foreign policy, that thing americans famously give a poo poo about

i will admit that withdrawing from afghanistan does make him the best foreign policy president in decades at least, but the only people that care about that are journalists and military-industrial goblins. most people forgot it even happened months ago. so i don't think it's likely that foreign policy has anything to do with biden's approval ratings

the withdrawal was already happening, the skeleton crew that remained basically finally shut off the lights and locked the door in 2021. time will tell if it's ultimately good or bad for the region and if the new taliban government has really changed for the better over the last 20 years.

the withdrawal process itself was a complete shitshow though, and the us left a lot of at-risk people behind or struggling to get out

withdrawing was always going to be be a "complete shitshow" because the US lost the war, and it didn't have the power to dictate the situation in-country when it left. if biden hadn't ripped the band-aid off, the "skeleton crew" would have stayed indefinitely in order to maintain the fiction that the US was in control, just like trump before him, and obama, and arguably even bush.

Yeah I don't see how it was going to go any other way.

We now put them on heavy sanctions and have denied their governments funds rightfully owned by them abroad. So now millions are going to die from a completely preventable famine.

Exactly. There were reports that up until literally August 11th (4 days before the Taliban took Kabul) people in the DoD were convinced that they could force Biden to change course and halt the withdrawal. The whole thing was a shitshow because the people in charge of actually making it happen tried to keep it from happening.

given that it generally wasn't a question of 'if', but 'when' the afghanistan government would fall, they should have had a contingency plan for getting people who's lives were directly at risk due to working with us forces out instead of the mess at the airport or leaving them to fend for themselves and try to run to uzbekistan, turkmenistan or tajikistan.

even years ago, the process for getting interpreters out was a long and convoluted one that left many people facing uncertainty and death for themselves and/or their families.

afghanistan is a country where a majority of the population wants a nice stable modern democracy, but an entrenched minority who have achieved generations of power and fortune through exploitation (of the poor, of ethnic minorities, and of women) and control of resources are really not interested in that happening, and so a nice stable democracy is not going to take hold until literally every one of these exploiters is dead and their wealth distributed fairly among the rest of the nation.

hm.
