One thing to keep in mind with 3D is that the bitrate is incredibly important in a way that it isn't for 2d movies. I think a 2GB 1080p file looks good, but for 3D if it's not like 10-20 GBs it's gonna look like trash and lose a lot of the effect.

For reasons unkonwn to me, a mediocre cartoon series cancelled after two season got a game on Quest released today https://www.oculus.com/experiences/quest/5352920984748732/ Also, 2vs2 on Eleven TT https://twitter.com/ElevenVR/status/1481407885078900737

Serious Sam 3 VR is a drat good time. It's always nice when a non VR is ported to VR well, because the graphics and amount of content is above most native titles. The Egypt levels are almost as nice as those VR sightseeing apps.

If anyone has recommendations for films where watching them in 3D genuinely adds a lot then I'd be happy to try them out. A lot of CGI movies benefit pretty well from being in 3D, but less because it's super impressive and more just because being in 3D is inherent to how they're made. Even Pixar's older movies that have been rereleased in 3D are pretty good, because they usually go back and re-render it.

What's the best video player for a quest 2 if I want to sit in a fake theater and check it out? Skybox seemed to be the one mentioned on reddit. Is that the one to get?

Bigscreen is free so you can try that out and if it doesn't suit you move on to paid options.

Skybox is the best. bigscreen is just OK, but I havent used it in like a year... maybe it's improved. Also VRchat has some worlds where you can watch 3d movies streamed from right inside the world, all built into a menu.

Hey, is there a quick way to trigger the Valve Index's passthrough function, at any time, with one (or two?) button press? I've gotten it to work while in the Home environment, using the settings menu ("Room View" or something), but if I'm playing Alyx and I want to grab a drink off my desk, it's almost faster to just try and shove the headset up. I'm almost certainly missing something simple, but, hey ... I can't help it Also, Alyx is astoundingly good, so far. Just hit the abandoned subway, got to the first fabricator, switched to the multitool, and (right on cue) in walks Mr. Zombie. I seriously pointed the multitool at it for a second, jaw hanging open, like "welp, imma ded". Turns out, I was able to reflexively switch to the pistol and emptied half a mag into it. My palms were *sweating* after that. Friggin' amazing. My other discovery is that, if I ever have to sneak around with a pistol to defend myself with, I am going to look like the biggest loving tool ever. Like, pointing it 90s gangsta-style around corners, shooting outlines around heads, the works.

Big screen is less actually good and more fun to watch pirated movies while randos yell at the screen and lobbies that seem like 10 years older than the group chat demographic(but still pretty bad)

Just opened my quest 2 and it took me pretty much my whole quest battery to get stuff installed and updated / get the oculus app and air link working and steam vr working and play a couple of songs of beat saber, but man is it better than the PSVR was. Being cable free is real nice and the controllers are great. Also there is much, much less screen door effect stuff. Not sure it was charged all the way to begin with but I may need to invest in a batttery pack to strap to my head sooner rather than later. I had not had enough yet when I hit the low battery warning. Can I run it indefinitely if I tether it to the included charger? Or does it not charge fast enough to offset the drain?

If you can get an Anker power bank a lot of us just put the battery in our pocket and run a usb cable up to the headset through our shirt (optional). Mine usually doesn't charge while playing but it really cuts down on how fast the battery drains.

If you know someone with a 3D printer there are brackets you can print to mount the battery on the back of the headset.

Some folks don't like Alyx's weapon selection system for their own valid reasons, but I maintain that a weapon selection mechanic that uses only gross, "big" physical movements that aren't sensitive to overtravel or overpressure and can therefore be done reliably, accurately & quickly while under stress was a solid design choice.

I do like the panic of messing up a grab in a realistic shooter but Alyx is so smooth and polished that I think the design is good.

I like Resident Evil 4's compromise on weapon selection. You can carry however many weapons you can fit in your case, but you have only a few weapon "slots" on your body. You equip weapons to those slots in a menu, and then grab them off your body in game. That way you don't have to deal with the awkwardness of having a shitload of grab points around your body, as late-game it's typical for your arsenal to include a pistol, magnum, shotgun, TMP, rifle, 3 types of grenades, knife, and possibly a rocket launcher. As an aside, for new RE4 players: the rocket launcher is basically "pay 30,000 to skip a boss." Hitting a boss with it on their weak point will severely damage them (enough to put them in their next phase, if they have phases), or kill them outright. If there's a boss that you hate fighting, then save yourself some frustration and just buy a rocket launcher. The game gives you one freebie in the castle, which I personally use on Salazar's right hand (it comes off).

Speaking of Resi and explosives, I'm almost done with Claire's route in RE2 and for half the game it just kept showering me with ammo for guns I didn't have, particularly grenade launcher rounds. Then I finally unlocked it, Mr X hosed off out of her story as well, and I essentially had carte blanche to clear out every enemy in the police station and collect everything at my leisure because I had like 20 of both grenade types. Won't lie, it felt good. I'll probably buy RE4 after completing 3, then I can tackle 7 and 8. So much Resi in VR now!
