In my opinion garlic is so good for the early and mid game that it's an instant buy anyways. It allows you to harvest XP at great speed. Any late game benefits are great but not even required

It is a starting weapon for one of the characters, which is how you unlock it.

I think a lot of my bible love comes from playing with the skeleton. With someone else and no duplicator, bible is pretty unimpressive.

Actually the skelly is just op. Has a very good starting weapon and his passive scales amazingly with all of the good weapons.

I did a regular library run with no upgrades today and yeah, I think this is the way to play the game once you get to a point where regular runs become too easy for you. There was still plenty of downtime, but there were also a good number of encounters that really had me on the ropes. The final 30 seconds were especially difficult. I got really lucky with an early duplicator drop as well. Not sure I would've made it past the first couple of minutes without it.

Yeah fwiw I've been playing without upgrades. I kind of hate that feature in games, where you gotta ask yourself whether you are doing better because you improved, or because you grinded enough upgrades. I was considering getting the "extra projective" one just because it's so gamechanging but eh, glad to hear I'm not the only one not diving down that upgrade tree.

The amazing thing about Porta is if you never level up, your lightning bolts keep going fast. You can easily last for an entire minute without getting a level just leaving exp all over the place.

I managed to beat hyper library without permanent boosts, but garden without permas still eludes me. The green, robed zombies and the giant bats are such a huge damage check and they're almost impossible to overcome. I think you need a very lucky combination of drops (or to be much better than I am) if you ever want to clear it. :sweatdrop:

Difference between evolved book and garlic and evolved book w/ no garlic was big for me, especially in the last minute of the game in hyper library. It kept pushing enough stuff back into the whirling pages of death that I could basically stand still at the end.

Standing still is basic bitch poo poo. get so pumped on evolved weapons that you can move full tilt wherever you want during the last minute to rake in those red gems and level up those money bags, swim in that coin like scrooge mcduck

With enough movement speed it seems you can keep pace with the axe evo projectiles and just have a stack of projectiles directly in front of you as you run full tilt in one direction. Super finicky to get it going intentionally but incredibly satisfying.

In garden you really need to get used to doing big circular movements to constantly pick up the XP you killed earlier, and also to avoid being bodied by bat swarms pushing dangerous enemies into you. Ideally you'll want all the beefy enemies corralled into one big group you're orbiting around, letting you pick off the weaker respawns on the outside of your path. Also, you can totally walk through the flower rings for minimal damage, and probably should do so before a horde starts piling up outside.

I find that usually the make-or-break moment is the giant skeleton horde that hits a bit after the ten-minute mark. You should try to have enough AoE damage to absolutely carve through them without stopping and farm enough XP to get at least one evolved weapon before or just as the following werewolf horde hits. If you manage that, you should have good odds making it all the way to the end. If you don't, you'll probably end up falling behind on the XP curve in the werewolf/bigbats waves and end up biting it soon after.

This game is good, and for what it's worth it is pretty much a direct clone of Magic Survival for Android with a better translation. If you like VS and have an android phone I'd recommend checking out Magic Survival since it's a more 'complete' game right now with the same exact gameplay loop and many of the same spells/powerups (plus way more that aren't in Vampire Survivors [yet?]), and also it's free.

And both games are arguably heavily inspired by a mobile game called Archero which is another "you move around and choose upgrades while your character attacks automatically" game that is even more "complete" than either one and is very fun, but also is constantly forcing ads and cash shop bundles in your face and from what I remember pretty slow to progress in without spending money on it.

+1 to that, although the final waves of Forest are easier than the final waves of Library. Library starts getting hard to keep up with around 26 minutes and stays tough to the end. Forest causes the most trouble around 23 minutes, but then eases up around 27 minutes and goes into XP pinata mode.

Decided to go in a completely new direction and ended up with evolved axe and evolved fire wand. Evolved is pretty crazy

Now I'm want to see about evolved knife. The thing I like about knife is it allows you to cut through the direction you want to go so I'm curious how the evolved version is

The birds become quite strong once they're fully levelled up and combined with spellbinder and empty tome, but that's a lot of setup for a single weapon and they're pretty weak in the early game. If they ever get evolved forms they're going to be bonkers for sure, but for the time being they do feel awfully situational.

The birds have maybe the best dps overall once they're fully upgraded, but since you can't really aim them much they don't shine until the very end, when you're completely swarmed with monsters. They're extremely good at that point, though.

I don't know if this is true. I'm hitting 3-4k+ DPS with stuff like unholy vespers or heaven sword. Even fully upgraded Peachone seems to top out at less than 1k.

Hwurmp posted:

:yossame: Upgraded santa water feels a lot more effective, it can pretty much create a damaging circle all the way around you, especially with some +area or +duration stuff active.

I finally felled Mad Forest without permanent boosts! :toot:

This one took ages. I was planning on going for a six evolved weapons run, but an early bad roll put those plans to a halt. But I still got duplicator out of it, and I managed to get the evolved knives and magic rod before 15 minutes, which really carried me until the endgame. People were definitely right to say the middle third of Mad Forest is the hardest. Once the giant mummy wave appears, it's smooth sailing unless swarms of bats/ghosts push powerful enemies into you and lock you down.

Next step, hyper Mad Forest without perma boosts? Probably not. I don't think I have that in me. :sweatdrop:

DPS is calculated across the whole time you had the weapon, so it's a bad metric. If you take a weapon when there are fewer monsters and/or don't fully upgrade it for a while, it will record lower DPS than a weapon you pick up in the late game and power max ASAP. I got Peachone quite late in the Hyper Forest and maxed it, and it was doing twice as much as you have observed.

So does anyone think it would be better to NOT unlock Gennaro? Playing him unlocks the Pumparumpa, which is generally considered to be bad. If you leave him locked, that ought to make your choices better on the average?

Considering how powerful Gennaro is before you get the 5000 coins required to unlock +1 projectiles on all characters, no. A 5/5 Pumma with 5/5 Recovery perks also feels pretty important for winning with a mostly static build; 1HP/s doesn't sound like a lot, but it's enough to let you ignore food completely.
