I like to open Google Maps and find places in our country where I have no concept of what life there is like. Here's one, Guymon, Oklahoma I was born in Sacramento, CA, then moved to Rhode Island at age 10, and went to college in Boston, MA. I vacationed once to Austin, TX, which was pretty cool. Being in Rhode Island, I'm a 3 hour drive to NYC, or 30 minute drive to Boston. And Philly and DC by train are only a few hours top. I've always wondered what it would be like to like to not not live in a geographical hub location, because most of my American experience has been shaped by living close to a major metropolitan city. Please tell me about your weird geographically isolated town you live in (Or just Guymon), and why it's good, bad, and what your life is like (?) , as I'd find that fascinating to read about. zaepg fucked around with this message at 21:23 on Jan 22, 2022 |

When you graduate basic training they ask if you want them to let your local paper know so they can run a little blurb in the paper

I live in a small Florida town outside of Tampa. It was one of those places that seemed to be perpetually stuck in 1992 until it was forcefully ripped into modern times a few years ago when millennials like me moved there because the city was too expensive. Now all the older locals do is complain about all the “change” and “city kids” and “different demographics” moving in. You bet they were super pissed at all the chain restaurants opening and a new fancy Publix. Suspiciously silent when the Chick-Fil-A opened though. Today it’s at a weird transition point where you can see both upper middle class yuppie families shopping next to a toothless tweaker mumbling to themselves in the frozen food aisle.
