I don’t personally think the article made a meal of it, but I always wonder what’s the point of bringing up someone’s legal name.

Can’t speak for anyone else but as an Asian person I’ve more than once been asked what’s my real name. For trans people the deadnaming is more often associated with hateful intentions, I’m sure.

Let’s just call people what they wanna be called and move on from it.

It's just an interview cliche, just a little background to fill the word count. It's like using 'Webster's dictionary defines...' in a speech.

Pretty much this, a formality. Check out any celebrity bio and they tend to start out with something like, "Born Norma Jeane Mortenson, Marilyn Monroe was..."

Names are contextually different for celebrities because stage names rarely have a deeper meaning than "sounding better" or "standing out." "Joss Whedon" is going to stick in a producer or agent's mind more than a Joe or Joseph. I know tons of people who go by a catchier name to promote themselves because being memorable is a huge part of networking here. You only keep your given name if you're a legacy or small potatoes crew like me.

But then again, I go by the male form of my name to net more interviews. It's all tactics, not personable.

Sometimes, it's even a bare necessity to "change" your name. As I understand it, the screen actor's guild requires unique names so if you have the same name as some other member past or previous, you have to choose a screen name. I don't know if that's the case for writers/directors or whatever Whedon classifies as, though.

Fox was discovered by producer Ronald Shedlo and made his American television debut in the television film Letters from Frank, credited under the name "Michael Fox". He intended to continue to use the name, but when he registered with the Screen Actors Guild, which requires unique registration names to avoid credit ambiguities (and the possibility that royalty checks would be sent to the wrong actors), he discovered that Michael Fox, a veteran character actor, was already registered under the name.[3] As he explained in his autobiography Lucky Man: A Memoir and in interviews, he needed to come up with a different name. He did not like the sound of "Michael A. Fox" during a time when "fox" meant "attractive" and because his "A" sounded too much like the Canadian "eh?" Fox also disliked the sound of "Andrew" or "Andy", so he decided to use a different middle initial and settled on "J", as a tribute to actor Michael J. Pollard.[6]

My favorite anecdote about Hollywood names is how Michael Keaton (born Michael Douglas) has to change his name because there were already two Michael Douglases working as actors. In some interview he said "One is doing very well for himself, and the other is doing cheap porn movies like Basic Instinct" :iceburn:

I just finished watching this through Sundance, it’s very good and everyone should watch it as soon as they can. The stories told by some of the women he assaulted are heartbreaking and it’s good that they have somewhere to speak out that is as carefully built as this doc is. I imagine it will spark a wide range of reactions, and it doesn’t try to downplay Cosby’s influence or the impact he’s had on pop culture and black culture specifically, but it frames those things as facilitators of his ability to assault as many women for as long as he did. It was also late enough in production that they were taping interviews in Philly when he was released from prison in July and they got reactions from some of their interviewees about that.

edit: it looks like Sundance is gonna have a second screening on Monday. Tickets are virtual and I think for those second screenings you have 24 hours after the scheduled time to watch it on your tv or computer or tablet or whatever. It’s $20 but it’s a 4 episode doc and that’s probably about the price for a month’s worth of Showtime so that’s still worth it imo

I think the Spanish Fly bit has been a little exaggerated over the years. The actual joke in the bit is that Spanish fly doesn't exist and horny thirteen year old boys make up poo poo. The punchline is him going to Spain and a Spanish cab driver asking him for American Fly.

Don't get me wrong. It's a REALLY, REALLY hosed up bit where some of the jokes come from describing raping a mentally ill women and Cosby tells on himself because the idea of Spanish fly is that it's an aphrodisiac for mutually loving not drugging women. The fact that Cosby "imagines" Spanish Fly as causing women into being drunk and incoherent and not ya know... horny, is very telling and probably coming from his experience of probably drugging women at the time.

But I think it's been mythologized into Cosby having this bit where the whole joke is that he rapes women and it's been around for years. It was a hosed up bit, but one that I think was easy for people to overlook as general 1960s creepiness or for the horror of it all being hidden in the actual motion of the joke.

'Spanish fly' seems basically a euphemism for drugs that would later be called 'roofies'.

I mean it's not like sexual norms in the 70s... or 80s... or 90s... or 00s... were very good on that topic. A seemingly mainstream idea that boys raised in the 90s came away with was that women apparently had to be tricked into sex.

This is from a human sexuality class I took years ago but I was told Spanish fly was a substance from a beetle that caused blistering if rubbed on the skin so it was ingested with the belief that it would cause irritation in the genitals so blood would rush there and turn the person on.

The bit itself has Cosby talking about giving some to (this is purely from memory so I might have the name wrong) a woman called crazy Mary and then he makes exaggerated intoxication noises to describe how she acted.

It probably went back and forth. I imagine it started as some sort of half understood folk remedy like oysters, then used as a euphamism/joke term for actual narcotics then back to made up bullshit as it entered common parlance. I remember a time in the mid-late 90s you would see packets of 'Spanish Fly' at convenience stores next to the Tiger Boner pills and in dispensers next to condoms in club bathrooms.

Yeah irl it was not the "intoxicating" sort of chemical. Was widely used for other pharmaceutical uses for its irritating and blister-causing properties. against varies aches, inflammations. there as a belief that blisters helped bring inflammation to the surface, and the increased bloodflow to skin helped with inflammation and muscle aches. And ofc the sexual applications.

Sadly in my country it is one of the most threatened insect species, known only in a few locales despite directed conservation efforts. But was common a century ago. Its decline has litte to do with harvesting, biggest factor is the change of the agricultural landscape. It thrives in landscapes with a more diverse mosaic of dry meadows, sand, bush hedges etc that has since become rarer in the modern agricultural landscape. Has affected solitary wild bees of those environments too which affects the beetle as their larva are bee-parasites.

But Eastern and southern europe have more viable populations still.

It was alleged that he'd invite media members to parties at the mansion. He had tapes of everyone obviously, not just media, and they were "collateral" but it wasn't expanded on much. In the event of his death his executive secretary was instructed to destroy all the sex tapes, and an assistant said she was told they were put in a barrel that was then tossed to sea
