I believe it was because they expected Pete to get arrested and he would likely talk and they’d be arrested for murdering their coworker. While if they wiped out the cops the lack of any other nearby response would give them a chance to flee. It’s not a good plan but they panicked.

The resolution kinda sucks, but it’s good otherwise. Watch ‘Hell or High Water’, same writer and it’s really solid and under appreciated.

The part where Jeremy Renner's character talks to his friend about loss and grief is good but the rest of the movie is schlocky genre porn from a writing standpoint. Not as good as Hell or High Water which was not as good as Sicario.
