Hardly any of the houses in my neighborhood had basements, just half-underground split level rec room type things. None of them smelled except the people across the street from us who had a kerosene heater with a burnt spot in the carpet in front of it. It smelled like kerosene and burnt carpet a little. Come to think of it, I don't remember anything about the kids who lived there, just the kerosene heater and the time we made up some game called "Hot Sa-Lava" that was like volleyball except that the ground was made of lava. I think there was a girl named Becky and maybe a younger brother or two. The dad on the other side of the duplex pulled a gun on one of the neighbors once, though, I remember him pretty well (drinky Irish guy with a bushy red mustache). Only one kid in the neighborhood had a basement and it didn't smell like anything, but one time her parents got a refrigerator and a bunch of other appliances and let us set up a little village in the cartons and it was the most fun part of my childhood, definitely better than Disney. I think about it probably every week or so. OK, thanks to listening to this episode of Theater of Memories, tune in next week to hear about the rednecky girl who showed me her Dad's Penthouses and which ethnicities the old guy next door would talk poo poo about.

We had a basement when I was a kid. My friend who's dad owned the funeral home in our lovely little town in the Ozarks had a big ol' house with a partial basement. Edit: I don't remember what it smelled like but it brought back a lot of memories

The human brain remembers smells best. Next time you are in an office supply store like Staples or OfficeMax, go down the aisle that has pencils and erasers, and you will probably remember early elementary school.

We have no basements in Arizona. Sorry, OP. Caliche rock sucks. Although where I work at, we used to own a building built in 1907 that did have a basement with a lot of twisting corridors and rooms straight out of a horror film. It didn’t smell like much of anything other than musty. When we sold the building and moved out, a bootlegger’s tunnel was found down there from the 1920’s. Pretty cool.

My maternal grandparents (basement) kitchen smelled of fresh dough and ozone from arcing electrics. It was very pleasant somehow. My dad's moms apartment smelled of chocolate, cigars and cognac. It was exquisite. Especially on winter day where the air outside was crisp and icy and a window cracked open created a fine mix. My great grandfather was a fading and largely bedridden, octogenarian wisp of a man who had once been a wealthy importer and owned a midtown store with luxury goods like cigars, fabrics, perfume and liquor. His house was enormous, old and creaky and full of smells of old things that might have once been fine and valuable. There was furniture in exotic woods, frilly drapery, ornate plaster ceilings and wall decorations, stained glass windows, a piano, a card playing table with leather hide chairs for four players. All the smells were mixed with a whiff of cooking gas from the ancient stove and water heater and a pervasive stink of petroleum from the cast iron room heaters (I hated lighting those things!).

I grew up in the Midwest but I live in California now and I miss basements. Basements own. This kid I was friends with in elementary school’s whole house smelled loving horrible, forget the basement. The first time I went over there it hit me so hard I thought I was going to barf but I didn’t want to be rude so I didn’t say anything. I got used to it after a few visits. I don’t know what it was, the place seemed clean they weren’t gross people or hoarders or anything. No pets, no smoking. There was just an overpowering rotten cheese funk in every room and I never figured out what it was. Edit: the kid next door to him always had woods porn. Literal shredded hustlers that he stashed in a tree stump.

People could never describe the smell of my parents' house either, other than that it was distinctive but not bad. Which I assumed was them being polite. But as an adult once I had long since moved out and could encounter the smell elsewhere I determined it was like old exotic wooden things and incense, as evidenced by how every like Tibetan/Nepali goods store I have ever been in smells the same (a sample size of three stores but still fairly illustrative)
