Edit: we're doing a bit of a pokemon parody! Click here to try it (password yob) https://blaise-rascal.itch.io/byobemon Hello everyone! You may remember the time we made a cloud game together and the time we made an egg game together. Let's do it again! The way this works is that everyone here will have the opportunity to submit art, music, and writing. I'll shove as much of this into a video game as possible. You can post your assets in this thread, or email them to me at blaze.rascal.sa@gmail.com. Our deadline for the entire game will be February 5th at 8:00PM EST. When the game's finished, I'll credit you, and put it onto itch.io, available to play for free. (Also, we'll have the option to submit our game to the narrative driven jam if we want - we'll cross that bridge when we get there.) This time around, our game will have an emphasis on dialog interactions! And, I've made a decision: The player will control a character who will walk around and interact with a game world! WRITER'S STYLE GUIDE So you want to contribute writing to this game? Great! The dialogues in this game will use the SayWhat engine which I discovered yesterday. Link: https://nathanhoad.itch.io/saywhat A dialog might look like this: Some instructions: - A line starting with a pound sign is a NODE TITLE. (In this case the nodes are BookEncounter, BeginReading, ToughMonsters, StrangeMonsters, MedicineMonsters, CuteMonsters, and END.) Nodes are where conversations can start, as well as where conversations can jump to. - A line with a colon in the middle is a line of dialogue. The name of the speaker goes before the colon. - A line starting with a hyphen is a response option, for when you have branching dialogue. Not every dialogue needs to be branching! It is totally great if a conversation is just a simple string of dialogue lines. - Besides what I've shown in my example, there are A LOT more things this dialogue engine is capable of doing; you can set variables, check variables, and even trigger functions like animations! I'll try to implement as many of these features as I have time for. If you want to write dialogues for the game, feel free to use your favorite text editor, or the official SayWhat text editor, which offers syntax highlighting - get it by clicking the link above and scrolling down until you see SayWhat-<your os>-4.3.0.zip . Or, you can just give me the text as a big unorganized blob, and I'll put it into the correct format! ARTISTS' STYLE GUIDE So you want to contribute art to this game? Great! I want this game to feel full of fun things to discover and fun characters to meet. Feel free to draw whatever art you want, and I'll do my best to shove it into the game. But if you want to make things easier for me, try to do the following things: -Submit character & object art with the background already transparent so I don't have to bother lassoing your art -Submit art that is useful. Things like environments for the player to walk around may be boring to draw but they are needed! Also, we'll need a main character with walking animations in different directions. (All art is appreciated, but this kind of art is extra appreciated.) -For the sake of consistency, please draw environmental art with the light source from the top left. Here is a size reference guide. (The game will be the same dimensions as this image: 960x540) The person is 120px tall, the tree is 180px tall, and the 3-story tower is 520px tall. (If you prefer drawing side-view instead of this isometric style that's cool too, all art is welcome) MUSICIANS' STYLE GUIDE So you want to contribute music to this game? Great! I don't have a lot of instructions. Just do your thing I guess PROGRAMMERS' STYLE GUIDE I'll be the main programmer but maybe you want to be let into the github project? Send me a message if so, i'll be happy to let you code some godot scenes OVERALL IDEA OF OUR GAME I don't know exactly what I want the gameplay to be like, but I do think it'd be cool if we have a world that the main character can walk around. And there should be people & things that you can interact with - very standard rpg. Maybe... Maybe there will be MONSTERS like POKEMON???? Time will tell. blaise rascal fucked around with this message at 17:08 on Jan 30, 2022 |

Thanks for sharing it! I have noticed you posting about your game, and I keep forgetting to tell you that it seems like an awesome project, and I wish you the best of luck! My gut feeling is that it will be tough for this project to include drawings that have a horizon & sky, simply because I envision more of a top-down game. But maybe something like this could work? I'll check later if the buildings & stuff are roughly the correct size as I put forth in the style guide

I have noticed you posting about your game, and I keep forgetting to tell you that it seems like an awesome project, and I wish you the best of luck! Yeah, the style + perspective is all over the place because I have improved so much so quickly as an artist from working on this project that I can't keep a consistent style The game as I am currently working on it is 640x480 so I have been reworking and resizing a lot of old stuff, like this old thing: has become this: And working at that size is very quick and easy, so if there's something specific you need for this game I can do it I also have versions of everything with no text, some of them had text added in ways that wasn't quick to disable when doing my mass ipad export the other day. If you want anything to be resized to use in this game, or altered or whatever just let me know and I can A lot of the scenery like this one for example: Is designed for a roughly 3/4 view top-down RPG style game, I have a diagram I made of a smaller one showing the walkable tiles (in the terrible rpgmaker 48x48 tile size): The horizon still existing was a stylistic choice because I like to draw attention to cool starscapes, but also because the images are far taller than the screen size would be. So there's still a lot of walkable space (again, with really terrible 48x48 tile sizes in mind) for a 3/4 view game - but yeah this is definitely one lesson I learned; if there's a horizon it should be much higher up on the image. Heads up though - another lesson I've learned myself is that heavily stylized art like this is very hard to keep consistent with other art, like very little of it would mix well with pixel art. I've had a hard time selling any of this as pre-made assets because it's A) not a complete asset package on its own, B) doesn't mix well with other styles of art. Here's a 'side-view' map with a super low horizon being used with 3/4 sprites: And some other in-context screens (From before a major redesign and leaving RPGMaker behind) deep dish peat moss fucked around with this message at 20:05 on Jan 27, 2022 |

The aesthetic is sort of meant to be evocative of a diorama featuring little paper cutouts of things. So if it helps think of it in terms of a 3/4 view game, the buildings are largely side-view or lower-to-horizon views because they were the backdrop separating the scene from the horizon. Sort of like the perspective in Animal Crossing: (Not a stylistic choice I'm trying to convince you to make here, just an explanation for the perspective in the landscapes) |

(unfortunately, you'd have to wait a bit in order to do the latter, since I haven't gotten that part of the game's engine working properly yet) i can probably do a minigame, ill basically be coming in from scratch but luckily theres a lot of great godot tutorials |

The dialogue engine is mostly working! Now to make a game world, and code the ability to walk up to an NPC and start a conversation. I'd like to get a playable build pushed out soon so that you all can get a sense of how the game looks at the moment. Also, I've made a creative decision: The game's background will be real-world photographs. I just took a couple photos of my backyard. So there's no need to draw grass or anything like that. I'm still looking for drawings of buildings and NPCs to drop on top of these backgrounds! It'd be especially cool if you supply both an NPC drawing, as well some writing about how that NPC should talk / behave. (A regular-sized NPC would be between 50 pixels and 150 pixels tall.) e: I have an idea for an overarching story for the game, but I don't want to share it just yet. I'd rather you all feel like you have freedom to design whatever you want, than feel like your stuff has to "fit" into my story... Don't worry, I'll reveal my idea soon. blaise rascal fucked around with this message at 19:05 on Jan 29, 2022
