echinopsis posted:do those things actually work trig out or lookup tables with interpolation? a lookup table with 15-digit precision would be too large, and interpolation wouldn't work because it's not linear, so doing accurate interpolation just puts you back at calculating trig. trig functions can be calculated by taking the taylor series to whatever precision you need, e.g.: sin x = x - (x^3/3!) + (x^5/5!) - (x^7/7!) + (x^9/9!) ... but that's still a lot of expensive multiplication and division so that's not how calculators do it. i understand that calculators -- including the hp-35 -- use something called CORDIC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CORDIC, which is more powerful and efficient and only requires basic logical operations, but it is a little beyond my mathematical understanding to explain.

i think it's neat that CORDIC was developed for the B-58's bombing computer, though. i had a model of a B-58 on my ceiling as a kid

lol at this paleolithic article from 1993 about the brave new world of hornt on computers https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-1993-09-28-9309280044-story.html quote:Some day your sex life could be shut off for failure to pay your electric bill. quote:In May, the San Francisco company Algorithm released the compact disc "Cyborgasm," a collection of 16 X-rated audio vignettes for men and women, recorded in digital 3D sound, or virtual audio. The disc is packaged with an erotic poster, a "Cyber-condom" and a pair of cardboard light-blocking "eco-goggles" to provide an exclusively auditory experience. quote:Bulletin boards and the much larger online telecommunications services such as Compuserve, America Online and the Internet feature electronic conferences that allow lustful hackers to communicate with one another about such topics as sexual politics, body piercing and exhibitionism. (Not all conferences are so provocative, of course. A recent sampling of one service yielded the conference titles "Hairpiece Wearers," "My Spouse Is Asleep" and "Raiding the Fridge.") quote:"The computer is just another delivery medium," Dwyer said. "There is this whole New Age mind-set . . . `Let's leave the old garbage behind. Pornography can stay in print and videotapes, let's not have it on our wonderful computers.' Some people are kind of upset about that."
