Seems about right; you're eventually going to ignore enough stuff that the algorithm can't "intelligently" recommend you things so you just get a running tally of Steam new releases.

I don't even really do that, I have maybe a few dozen ignored games at most - mostly F2P and MMOs I was really sick of seeing in my feed constantly. Yet I still get basically the same queue as everyone else, including the flavor of the week asset flips, hentai visual novels that aren't quite explicit enough to be blocked as explicit content, and Chinese language only games I can't even read the titles of.

I used to go through new releases and find cool new things but now I literally don't go onto Steam and look for new things, I just get recommendations from friends, their activities, or external sources.

I am happier. Not like on a deep level or really even a surface level or okay I'm not happy at all but I don't willingly wade into garbage anymore.

Yeah that's the thing. I'll only occasionally look at recommendations out of mild curiosity, I haven't bought a game in years that wasn't either a big release or something smaller folks on here/discord are talking about, the discovery queue is functionally useless to me for any real purpose.

I go through my queue most days and I'll at least consider anything that's not obviously terribly or a genre I don't like. That leads to a lot of duds but I've played some good games that I would not have heard of otherwise.

The queue is a worthless feature.

Curators are even worse.

Steam's ability to actually recommend things is so bad I quite honestly wish that all of those features were destroyed.

"This game which isn't a shooter and doesn't have English support is recommended to you because you played a first person shooter!"

Steam is a garbage platform for exploration.

Doesn't the ignore button explicitly state that ignoring a thing will not affect what the ALGORITHM decides to show you, it just will never show you that specific thing again?

Ah, yeah:

steam posted:

How is selecting ‘Ignore’ different from just going to the next item?
Selecting ‘Ignore’ on a product in your Discovery Queue lets Steam know that you don’t want to see that product in any featured area or recommendations (it may still show up in areas such as ‘Popular New Releases’). It does not change what kind of games will be recommended to you.

Also I've found like a good dozen or so games through steam-queue that I'd have never found otherwise, yeah the majority are duds but given the sheer absurd size of the catalogue, yeah, makes sense. The interactive recommender tends to get better hits for finding stuff than the queue, but is static based on your library/playtime/whatever so it'll always give you the same results everytime.

I mean, the only reason they do that sort of thing is for the marketing, so doing that and also selling racism simulator is entirely consistent if you approach it from the perspective of just making money.

Hate speech is on the "What you shouldn't publish on Steam" list in the Steamworks distribution rules, but the store reporting tool doesn't actually allow you to select that as a reason. So...

Chances that the single overworked Valve employee that handles all of the platforms' user reports sees your little "This game is racist" note in the text box? Very slim.

There is a pretty interesting video from Valve on how the games on the front page are selected

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKo9DtLZl-8

Basically everything, except for the big take-over campaign at the top, is dynamically built, and is a selection of top sellers, top wish list items, curator- and friend recommendations as well as recommendations based on what you have recently played.
While the video is from September 2020, I don't think that much has changed since then.

The rest of the front page isn't the issue, it's just the queue, which routinely displays nearly the same games for a lot of people, including some very weird picks. Whether it's automated or not, it's clearly not varying based on preferences effectively.

Grondoth posted:

Doesn't matter if it was or wasn't. Valve could stop this kind of thing but they choose not to.

Cartoon Man posted:

There might be, but ever since the uproar about Hatred being banned, Valve has essentially chosen to wash its hands of the problem and just publish everything with no oversight at all. Because actually taking a stance in any direction gets them negative attention.

In my opinion, Valve are now cowards. They're afraid to curate their platform because they might get slightly bad press, they're afraid to make sequels to some of the most popular series of all time because they might possibly not be as well-received as the previous titles, they're afraid to actually make ANY new games because they might possibly not be the immediate money printing machines that their existing FTP games are... They're afraid to do anything that takes effort, honestly. The last time someone stuck their neck out was for Artifact, and it failed due to their incredible hubris and cold feet on support - and people at Valve learned from that not to try making a game ever again. The only thing they're interested in actually dedicating time to is the occasional VR pet project, it seems, which gets a pass on actually making money because it's VR.

Seems inevitable. The queue is trying to push 10 games a day. That's over 3600 games per year. How many new games come out each year that match your preferences? 50? 100? Either it repeats games it has already shown you, or it shows you things at are generally well liked even if they aren't much like what you usually play.

https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/256865325/movie480_vp9.webm

Why is this terrible? Well, let me quote one of the reviews:

quote:

The description indicates that you get to "drive" freighters through the Great Lakes. I guess if your definition of "drive" means changing the throttle and camera, then that's accurate. It would be cool to see some things like:

1. Steering
2. Planning out a new route
3. An active economy
4. Ship ownership/trading
5. Multiplayer
6. Better graphics
7. A tutorial
8. The ability to walk through and around the ship for things like maintenance, crew care, etc
9. The ability to jump to nearby ships, or at least identify them

My 5-year-old son LOVES Great lakes freighters, and I was really looking forward to being able to set up a shipping company with him, and combat the dynamic weather systems and waterways of the Great Lakes as we plan out our routes, and fight to turn a profit with our massive iron hauler, but this game just didn't deliver. I am a massive fan of the Farming Simulator series, and I was really looking forward to finding something similar here, as that series takes a fairly mundane, repetitive, and time-consuming activity, and makes it incredibly fun and engaging. This...was not that. This is, for better or worse, an incredibly under-detailed set of videos documenting several ship routes with very little extraneous information provided. I hesitate to even classify it as a "game". The textures are extremely low quality for a game released in 2021, they tear constantly when you zoom in to view passing ships or countryside, you can see the rails the ships travel on if you rotate the camera underwater, and the "HUD" is little more than developer details overlaid on the screen (although it does show you your current throttle setting). I was incredibly disappointed at how lackluster this was.

If there is one saving grace, it's that my son, loving freighters as much as he does, was happy watching the passing ships and tooting the horn, but even he asked why the ships looked weird (due to the tearing textures).
