Just out of curiosity, when was this element supposed to be obvious to the audience? The way the episode summaries are written on Wiki etc mention it in the first episode, but I don't recall seeing anything that obviously pointed to her being trans until they did her flashback episode. Just curious if I missed a piece of dialog or something pointing to it.

Episode 1, At the motel, Cal talks to her about his struggle/being closeted which would make no sense if Jules was cis.

Cal's whole story is American Beauty but better by 200%.

Rue almost getting turnt out was heavy. I've been in and out of NA a couple decades and almost nearly every woman, especially opiate addicts, will tell you that trading sex is part of their story. Men get clean when they run out of poo poo to steal or the criming catches up with them. Women have that one last resource before rock bottom.

Yeah I didn't even realize Laurie was essentially grooming her into sex trafficking til after that episode ended. The way she was so nonchalant about it/casually shooting her up was terrifying and the pans over to the padlocked basement door are very creepy in retrospect

And the way his mother kept egging him on even as he tried to act like a mature adult was absolutely insane.
Every time she tried to get close to an emotional truth, he lied to her face, and she knew it. Your creepy inhuman son trying and failing to gaslight you and keeping you out of his life isn't what I'd call 'acting like a mature adult'.

A part of me wishes the show had completely gone there, as long as they handled it sensitively. I feel like they could address that reality and explore that, but it felt like they just wanted to dip their toe in the themes and wouldn't go that far with Rue/Zendaya. Like an audience would judge trading sex as so much morally repulsive than anything else she's done.

But then maybe it would get too far from what the show actually is, or maybe they didn't feel confident handling it properly.

But she wouldn't be "trading sex". She would have been locked in a basement and kept hooked on IV heroin. It would not really be something she was willingly choosing.

True, but I still think that would be an interesting topic for a piece of fiction to sympathetically cover. And audiences are hosed up enough to still think less of the character/actress for that.

'Willingly choosing' is also kind of a complicated phrase from an addict's perspective, even without Laurie's injections and padlocks - I mean I'm not expecting glowing sex worker positivity from that particular situation either way.

Equally not sure this show could or should handle something like that. I don't even feel super comfortable posting about it, just felt like the show backed down and shied away from something real.

I have a feeling the Laurie angle is going to be the focus of the last few episodes because Rue can't just pull 10 grand out of her rear end and they've put a lot of work into making Laurie a subtle, but noticeable menace.

Yeah, pretty much.

LOL that this would have ended with her sister being sold into sex slavery, but addicts gotta addict.

Basically. The least realistic thing about her recovery has been Rue not seeming to stress about the debt she owes to a psycho drug dealer.

Lexi seems to have really sold these kids on her vision and gotten a whole lot of buy-in.

I loved her mom's cackling every time her character was on-stage. Haha, my daughter sees me as a drunken joke!

really loved the surreal blurring-the-lines-between-theatre-and-reality stuff in this episode. this is a sentence i didn't expect to say about euphoria, but it reminded me of perfect blue, or at least the disoriented tense feeling i get watching perfect blue. also absolutely popped for the loving cannibal holocaust theme song over the ending, the soundtrack choices this season have been incredible just between that, the inxs stuff with cal, and my absolute favorite sade song "you're not the man" in one of the last few episodes. stoked and terrified for the ending, my spidey sense makes me think they're gonna make something horrible happen to fezco but i'm hoping i'm wrong.

Yeah and Maddy not freaking out about the dress means she’s being taken in, contrasting with Rue’s escape.

I truly cannot tell if this is a bad soap opera mess of a show that's occasionally accidentally really good (episode 5 of season 2, the Rue special), and really stylish (rotating hallway shot, dickpick presentation, detective Rue) or if it's a good show with a point and a purpose that's just overly self-indulgent on pacing and musical numbers and Riverdale-level drama and is actually going to pay things off.

Every company I've worked for has done some unethical poo poo from paying less than minimum wage (inc. mine) or plagiarising, or literally gambling. I can't take the moral high ground on a dealer who looks out for his cleintele.
