i took a good listen to Dani California, and yeah, it's a little messy and sounds like it could be your typical local band with a dream, but i don't even know how to play instruments all that well myself. it's obviously a little rough if you take it seriously, but don't. highly recommended, liked & subbed, etc, etc

i am extremely excited that the new dj mixer i bought for myself as a 40th birthday present is projected to ship tomorrow. if not tomorrow, soon. i cannot wait, because my old one has been dead for too long despite me having had it repaired by a Professional Repair Person a while back, and i have bought a metric shitton of records in the time that it's been out of commission. it'll be good to have my entire studio running at 100% again.

dang sorry if it’s a double post, but right now i don’t see my reply, so i’ll try and say again:

it looks really incredible. seen it demonstrated, and looks like it does a lot more than just resonance and cutoff controls with so many synths i see coming out these days

what? pigments?

it’s an incredible synth from the perspective of what can control what and how much control you have, but it often sounds mediocre. I think the filters often don’t sound that good, like it has a LOT of filter options but largely pretty average imo

when I am using analog V and comparing instruments, the emulated synths always sound better than pigments, even though they must share a lot of behind the scenes stuff etc.

it’s extremely flexible and it’s growing on me but rarely do I love it like I do with some other things, but it lets me do things nothing else does

(analog V just gives me countless presets/patches
on a lot of classic synths and I do mega love it, but I can’t change the settings on the synths, but rarely would I need to, the demos show you it can be fun but the presets have a lot of good sounding patches and I kind spend less time fiddling and more time playing, and if I need to fiddle i’ll use pigments)

I got pigments for $100nzd on special. same with analog V. extremely good value. i had pirated them in the past but i do prefer them to just work and update and i don’t miss having access to all the individual instruments

if i did i’d get a juno because they’re just a fun synth, and the hammond organ simulator is incredible, I love it so much and none of the synths can fake it the way it doesn’t

oh okay. yase, pigments. good to know. i wonder what mistakes people do to make bad sounding filters and such on soft synths. good thing is, pretty much all synths can have their place, no matter how bad they sound, but maybe just not very versitile

i saw a cheap, 80's hardware synth that can sound pretty amazing with just a few effects

ive just had an epiphany and maybe this kind of thing is obvious or relatable or not idk but when I go back and listen to myself just noodling, I'm rarely impressed by my own playing, but if I've found a progression or something and explored it a bit, I can make music that in the future I'm likely to be pleased with. anyway.

I just impulse bought Dreamsynth because it was on sale. Why do I keep doing this? I don't know squat about sound design and just end up using presets anyways. :sigh:

Anyways, I still can't stop making music. Latest attempt at https://soundcloud.com/the_door_is_scary/phoned-this-one-in

I think I have a problem and need help. In the non-teaching season, my wife is doing an owl survey, which involves putting recorders in remote forested areas to record at night, and I'm like, "This would be useful for dungeon synth!!".

plz end it on a c# or something it feels so left off hahah

I finally got my comp in my new place, and spent some more time on this thing

More balancing to do and it needs an ending, but it's getting much closer now. The piano part a bit after 3 min is a lot of fun to play as well.

curious about this, coz tbh it took me ages to find a final chord to the progression I was happy with lol. and c# sounds .. quite wrong, it feels totally out of scale, what key do you think I'm in?

appreciate the feedback

Woolwich Bagnet
Apr 27, 2003

so you have an A to an E at the very end

if you do A4->E5/A4->D5/A4->C#5/A4/E4

you'll get a nice resolve at the end

yeah, you can prepare to record any time. so, if you’re playing around on piano, and you like the idea, you can record it to reference it later.

C# minor is one of my favourite keys to noodle around in. its relative major is E, so basically you're playing the same notes as in E major but your I is the V in E major so the notes in the scale take different "roles" so to speak

I should record some noodling in C# and post it. got all this ridiculous gear and I'm not even really writing or recording any music lol

I can’t make c# sound good at all in that progression. idk what I am missing

I am quite hopeless in playing in keys that require black keys lol

think about an A chord that's just the root, the fifth, and the octave, then try replacing the root with the third (C#)

something like this -- first a straight A then an A/C#: https://vocaroo.com/1ixcQbiS7VVY

not the analytical engine
Just saw this thread, hope it's a good place to ask:

Does anyone here want to do a low-stakes collaboration on visualizing their music? I'm thinking art project or demo, no money.

I make interactive dataviz websites for work, but I got into the field puttering around with little art-tool-game apps. The 2014 videos below are my programmer art way of representing the song analysis performed by the very powerful Echonest API (now defunct inside Spotify...). If I made new ones they would be wildly more inventive visually (or I'd work with a visual artist), and I'd be using the open-source descendants of that proprietary API.

The red boxes are results of statistical calculations that only mean something visually when you're debugging or thinking computational music analysis (not my forte).

Videos 1 and 2 are straightforward. Video 3 is a two-state system for comparing two alternatives to "changing the speed" of music.
Black square is current track.
Top track is original song (played faster/slower as you click the up/down icons).
Bottom track is the song split into calculated regularly-spaced "beats" which are played at normal speed but triggered in time with the rhythm.

(not sure how to embed dropbox videos)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/5x8znms52ujdvl2/echoblock_moondog_2014.MOV?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/er71xgg6niacku0/2014-04-02%2022.22.38-1.mov?dl=0

https://www.dropbox.com/s/f44o1abr4789gd1/2014-03-21%2023.21.41-1.mov?dl=0

If you're uninterested I'd also love to hear about which (if any) visualization approaches people actually like. The last one I remember was iTunes about 20 years ago and nothing had ever impressed me.
