Amen. I just found FileBrowser Pro this week, and combined with Chunky’s iCloud Drive and a backup sync, every day all my newest PDFs and the like are there, sorted and ready to go. Worth the 12.99 easily.

Eh I’ve noticed it when I’m reading in bed at night and it’s a little weird but it’s not a big deal imo.

It’s really apparent when using the dark mode in the awful app though.

Yeah The M1 Pro has it and you can end up in situations where it is very clear but for 99% of the uses you’ll never notice anything.

Following up on my own question, I just found out there was an event this month and nothing was announced. Does Apple only announce new models at events? Because if so, the next event is in June and I might get antsy and decide not to wait for a new model after all.

June is WWDC and is software focused. New hardware announcements are not common at WWDC.

thanks. any particular reason not to go used? are there lots of counterfeits out there?

also, what's the best way to prop up an ipad?

No counterfeits but you probably wouldn’t be saving much vs any possible issues you could run into.

You could check swappa.com

But personally I’d avoid eBay.

With how many people even on this very forum say that the iPad is good for porn I would never buy a used one unless its gone through intense sanitizing.

I'd be more worried about the battery life of a used/not-refurb'd-by-Apple iPad. I could see someone ditching an iPad after having used it a bunch, and/or kept it charging or dead for long periods of time.

Any recommendations for (EU) online stores where to buy cases/protection? For some reason, local stores have pretty much nothing for air 4. Would rather support something else than Amazon.

This is turning out to be harder than I thought it would be, but I'm looking for an app that reads ePUB and allows for two pages side by side in landscape. The default books app allows for this but has a ton of space between the two pages, and winds up shrinking the content. Most of the apps I've found that allow for side by side viewing require the book to be in CBR or such. Anyone have recommendations for a replacement for Books.app?

I pulled the trigger on a new iPad Air. I'm looking at keyboards for it and is there a reason to go for the Apple Magic Keyboard over something like the Logitech Combo Touch Keyboard Case? Functionality seems to be the same and it's significantly cheaper.

If you actually plan to type on your lap the Apple keyboard will be more stable.

That actually is a really good point now that I look at the design of the Logitech version.

Also consider your use case. I hand write a lot so I’m on the keyboard folio (the magic is not really compatible with writing a lot with a pencil)- but I don’t type as much.

The Magic Keyboard is expensive but drat is it nice.

You could also keep an eye out for bestbuy open box ones which are usually on a decent discount.

Or Amazon warehouse.

You’ll still get the full Apple warranty with them as well

The Best Buy open box discount wasn't much more that the Apple Store education discount. Went ahead and ordered it from Apple. May as well not gently caress around and get the good stuff.

If you have AppleCare on the pad it’ll cover the keyboard too, fyi.

So instead of a normal lockscreen my iPad says, "iPad is unavailable." Solutions online say I have to restart this thing via recovery mode in iTunes, and I'll lose all my data. I really don't want to lose my data. Is the apple store all I can do?

You can always check to see if you have an iCloud backup, but all hope isn't necessarily lost- https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201263

You throw it into Recovery mode, then when finder/iTunes gives you the Update/Restore option try update first. Watch Step 4 though, after 15 minutes the iPad will reboot and it can take longer than that to download a new ipsw file, just let the download finish before you kick it back to recovery mode. No guarantees depending on what's hosed up in iOS, but it's a shot.

I ended up taking it to the apple store and they fixed it for me. Luckily my data was recovered even tho I never saved it to iCloud. I'm unsure about how to avoid this situation to begin with. I think the apple guy said I might've inputted an incorrect password too many times when I was sleeping?

I usually see this when somebody cracks the screen on their iPhone/iPad and the touch starts having issues, it'll start tapping bad passcodes by itself until it locks itself out unless you get it turned off.

It could happen if there were something on the iPad that could set off the touch - a hand flopped onto it during the night, a cat walking on it, etc. It would have to be at least intermittent over the course of like 2 hours or so though with the increasing timeouts.

The Logitech Combo keyboard is nice as well, but it does require a larger footprint. It does have a detachable keyboard which can be useful at times. And there's an extra row at the top of the keyboard for brightness/media/etc controls.

It's also about $120 cheaper for the 12.9 size.

Hang on to it until you buy a new one, Apple will give you a few bucks for trade in. Or if it's too banged up they'll recycle it for free.

They take them quite old too, we got a whole $40 for a first gen air last year. :v:
