I worked with Phil Holt at Arenanet and largely had good experiences working with him. He was involved in our Diversity and Inclusivity SIG and was just about the only member of the c-suite there that I had any faith in. He always struck me as a guy who was really, truly interested in doing what's best for whatever studio he worked for. That being said, it's disappointing to hear that he bungled the management of Undead Labs after Jeff left, though my own experiences with UDL makes me think the studio was rancid from the start. Was a pretty big red flag when I interviewed there after the Anet layoffs and one of my interviewers grilled me on the purpose of me participating in the aforementioned DEI SIG.

Ghost Leviathan posted:Politicians are also just ludicrously easy to bribe, especially when they don't actually want to do good things in the first place. For most of them the choice is "I can accept this sack of money in exchange for being told to look the other way and not do poo poo or occasionally put my finger on the scale a little bit" or "I can watch them hand that sack of money to one of my opponents and possibly push public opinion against me in other ways". Unfortunately, very few are willing to stand on principle and ethics in that scenario. Newsom in particular is a notorious corporate sock puppet who will do pretty much anything a sufficiently wealthy corporation tells him to(see his response to Disney during the pandemic, for reference), and California is hosed because even if you manage to avoid a republican governor, the state democratic establishment is riddled with people just like him.
