The company founder posted a big rear end screed in advance of this. Features hand-washing and no apology.

What I got from the Kotaku article was that the real problems were Holt and Schlosser and Strain had good intentions but was just too burnt out and not able to handle the level of scale the company had grown to

I worked with Phil Holt at Arenanet and largely had good experiences working with him. He was involved in our Diversity and Inclusivity SIG and was just about the only member of the c-suite there that I had any faith in. He always struck me as a guy who was really, truly interested in doing what's best for whatever studio he worked for.
That being said, it's disappointing to hear that he bungled the management of Undead Labs after Jeff left, though my own experiences with UDL makes me think the studio was rancid from the start. Was a pretty big red flag when I interviewed there after the Anet layoffs and one of my interviewers grilled me on the purpose of me participating in the aforementioned DEI SIG.

It's not the direct campaign contributions, so much as the economic weight of the company. Activision Blizzard, even at it's lowest point in recent history, was still a $30 billion dollar company with thousands of Californian employees. That is an enormous cudgel for a company to wield against a state government. Their influence is based on their economic impact to California and intimating that if conditions are not "friendly" enough they may take all that money and all those jobs elsewhere.

And of course who knows what sort of networking is going on behind the scenes. An example is that a former attorney general will never suffer for work, any major company would be happy to pay out the nose to have an insider able to help them out.

However, one member of [Activision Blizzard's] board of directors, Casey Wasserman, put forward $40,200 for Newsom’s 2018 gubernatorial campaign, and an additional $100,000 to counter the campaign last year to recall Newsom. Activision did not respond to a request for comment from Wasserman.

[...]

Activision is also a member of the Entertainment Software Assn., a trade group of the video game industry comprising the 31 top game publishers in the U.S. that has long lobbied the government against video game regulation. The organization contributed more than $48,000 to Newsom’s 2018 campaign for governor and, so far, $20,000 to his 2022 campaign. It also donated $50,000 against the recall.

[...]

As a company, Microsoft donated more than $45,000 to Newsom’s 2018 and 2022 election campaigns, and an additional $15,000 through a political action committee. A member of its board of directors, Reid Hoffman, has donated over $57,000 to Newsom’s campaigns.

For most of them the choice is "I can accept this sack of money in exchange for being told to look the other way and not do poo poo or occasionally put my finger on the scale a little bit" or "I can watch them hand that sack of money to one of my opponents and possibly push public opinion against me in other ways". Unfortunately, very few are willing to stand on principle and ethics in that scenario.

Newsom in particular is a notorious corporate sock puppet who will do pretty much anything a sufficiently wealthy corporation tells him to(see his response to Disney during the pandemic, for reference), and California is hosed because even if you manage to avoid a republican governor, the state democratic establishment is riddled with people just like him.

Yeah, I 100% absolutely believe that NoA might have done a naughty regarding unions - because it's a safe bet that every single large company is doing naughties regarding unions - but there's nothing there of substance right now.

Yeah the article's super light and no companies are providing comment. The complaint is linked to from the article, but it's not much other than the main bulletpoints.
